Le Britannique Kris Meeke (36 ans) a signé un contrat de trois ans avec Citroën Racing. En 2016, il sera chargé du développement de la future World Rally Car et disputera quelques épreuves mondiales.
L’information a inondé les médias ce matin. Elle vient d’être confirmée par Citroën. Kris Meeke et son copilote Paul Nagle porteront les couleurs de Citroën Racing en Championnat du monde des Rallyes FIA jusqu’à fin 2018.
« Dans le cadre de notre nouveau programme, nous voulions tout d’abord nous appuyer sur un pilote de référence et d’expérience, bénéficiant d’un solide bagage technique », a déclaré Yves Matton, Directeur de Citroën Racing. « Kris représentait le meilleur choix et nous sommes ravis qu’il ait décidé de rester avec nous. »
Les négociations ont semble-t-il été âpres car Kris Meeke était également en contact avec Tommi Mäkinen pour intégrer le projet Toyota Yaris. « J’ai choisi de rester avec Citroën Racing pour récolter les fruits du travail effectué depuis plus de deux ans », a reconnu Kris Meeke. « C’est aussi une forme de remerciement de la confiance qui m’a été témoignée par l’équipe. Tout ce qui nous attend au cours des prochains mois me passionne. J’ai débuté en sport automobile dans un bureau d’études ; même si j’ai hâte de m’installer au volant, je vais suivre assidûment chaque étape de la conception et le montage de la première voiture. »
Les premiers tests sont prévus au mois d’avril. Kris Meeke et Paul Nagle seront également au départ de plusieurs rallyes WRC 2016 au volant d’une DS3 WRC/Michelin engagée à titre privé. On parle de neuf ou dix épreuves, à commencer par le Rallye Monte-Carlo. Un programme similaire devrait être proposé à Stéphane Lefebvre.

A Citroën press release has confirmed that Kris Meeke and his co-driver Paul Nagle will continue to defend its colours in the FIA World Rally Championship until the end of 2018.
“In terms of our new programme, above all else we wanted an experienced, top-level driver, with sound technical knowledge,” said Citroën Racing’s Team Principal Yves Matton. “Kris was undoubtedly the best choice and we are delighted that he has decided to stay with us.”
It appears that negotiations were tough since the Ulsterman was also in contact with Tommi Mäkinen to work on the Toyota Yaris project. “I chose to stay with Citroën Racing to reap the rewards of the work done over the last two years or more,” explains Kris Meeke. “It’s also a way of thanking the team for the faith they have shown in me. I’m very excited about everything that lies ahead in the next few months. I began my career in motorsport as a design engineer so although I can’t wait to get into the car, I’ll be following every stage of the design and assembly of the first car with great interest.”
The first test with the new car is scheduled for April, while Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle will also take part in selected rounds of the 2016 WRC in a privately entered DS3 WRC/Michelin. There is talk of nine or ten events, beginning with January’s Rallye Monte-Carlo. A similar programme is likely to be offered to Stéphane Lefebvre.
