Graf Racing at the 2015 RZR Mint 400

    POLARIS ; RJ Anderson XP1K2

Professional Driver. One-Of-A-Kind Heavily Modified Vehicle. Do Not Attempt. You Could Die. “XP1K2” is a seven-minute onslaught of intense off-road road action, set in a massive 600-acre forest near Mt. Baker, Washington. The video stars Off-Road Racing Champion RJ Anderson, driving a custom Holz Racing built Polaris RZR XP 1000 Side-by-Side (SxS), complete with a Polaris ProStar® 1000 Muzzys Performance engine and custom Walker Evans Racing shocks. The “XP1K2” crew, including Tony Vanillo and his team of dirt and ramp engineers at the Off-Road Management Group, transformed the remote wooded location into a stunning array of creative obstacles, which included more than 20 natural terrain and man-made works of (terrifying) art. Spoiler alert – RJ Anderson reclaims the world record for a distance jump in a SxS – and does so by clearing a death-defying 100-foot gap!

More than a year of planning went in to the development and execution of the “XP1K2” campaign. It took the build team of 10, more than a month to carve out the heart-stopping playground as multiple obstacles featured hand built “ladder trail” which required two to three days each to weld, cover in wood and secure safely. The Mad Media crew of 40 then spent 14 days on location battling wind, rain, mud and fog to capture each of their incredible imagined obstacles.

The People of the Winter Ride

In 2015 the Southsiders invited 50 people and motorcycles to the Winter "Grizzly" Ride from France to Spain over the Pyrenees Mountains. Present were very high-level bike-builders, hard riders and cool men & women from around the world with their machines. Each had something special to offer and this film only shows a few.

    OVERLAND EXOTICS

We take a closer look at overlanding’s most unique vehicles. Some within reach, most not even within the stratosphere.
could preface this piece with with any number of justifications as to why its necessary, but I’m going to call it what it is: This is an unapologetic celebration of unmitigated excess. Below is a collection of overland vehicles that push well beyond adequate and into the rarified air of exotic status. While a handful are actually priced within reach, they may be unattainable to most of us for a variety of reasons. Some are one-offs and not even for sale. Without further ado, we present to you a handful of the world’s overland exotics.

    Mercedes Benz Gelandewagen Entdecker

Screen Shot 2015-04-17 at 1.45.03 PM

Designed by Alex Beccaria and Stanley Illman in 2009, the Entdecker represents one of the most capable vehicles ever assembled. Built on the commercial 461 G-wagen platform, the Entdecker is constructed to military grade standards with nearly every facet of the vehicle boasting the most durable and overbuilt components available. It is as close to a late model tank as you can buy, and you can buy one. For the paltry sum of $200,000 and change, you can have your own Mil-Spec Mercedes. If you want to get behind the wheel of EarthRoamer’s newest luxury liner, you’re going to not only need to get in line quickly, you’ll have to pony up a cool three quarters of a million bucks for the privilege. Built around Ford’s hulking F-650 chassis, this is an imposing machine. By the numbers it produces 800 foot pounds of torque, rolls on 46-inch tires, stores 146 gallons of fuel and has a GVWR of 26,000 pounds. With a habitat as finely appointed as any luxury yacht, this is the apogee of fine living paired to remote off-road travel. www.earthroamer.com

Arctic Trucks 6×6, Purpose-Built for Antarctica

    IMG_0137
Big ambitions require big tires, and lots of them. The Arctic Trucks 6×6 Hilux pictured above was built for the express purpose of tackling the cruel conditions of the southernmost continent. The huge 44-inch tires are propelled by a 3.0-liter common rail diesel engine that once turned on, is not switched off until the full scope of the journey is complete. The large cargo deck is designed to haul all of the supplies needed to survive Antarctica, and that bumper is not a fashion statement, it’s a hopeful attempt to not vanish forever down the gaping abyss of a glacial crevasse. So how much does something like this run? As the saying goes, if you have to ask… Rumor has it $300,000 will get your name on the list and an equal amount will almost get it to its intended playground…almost. www.arctictrucks.com

    Jeep Wrangler Africa Concept

    _38C1061
Throw all the money you have at this one, you can’t have it. A concept from Jeep recently revealed in Moab last month, the Africa features an extended cargo area, a raised roof, steel wheels and that most coveted of attributes, a diesel engine. Purported to be so well assembled it could be driven on any ambitious expedition starting tomorrow, this show pony will likely only traverse the looky-loo circuit before being dismantled. Hopefully this one-off will make it to production, but I’m not holding my breath.

Expeditions 7 Toyota Land Cruiser 78 Series

    _38C5280 - 2012-09-21 at 22-18-53

It is not enough to just add any 78 Series Land Cruiser to this list. Expeditions 7 holds a rare trophy as having the only vehicle to travel on all seven continents. To achieve that end, their Cruisers were outfitted with the very best components and accessories in the overlanding business. So well built were the trucks, and so reliable is the platform, that they suffered no failures, not even a flat tire in a double lap around the globe. Although these trucks are not unobtainium, they are only sold in select markets around the globe and they cost a pretty penny. Outfit a 78 to the nines and you’ll be forced to part with well over $150,000US.

WSBK ; Rea domine la seconde séance d’essais à Imola / Rea moves to the top after Imola FP2

FP2 overall standings decided in final moments of an exciting session.

This afternoon’s FP2 saw Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team), the current leader of the eni FIM Superbike World championship leap to the top of the standings with his final lap in a close and exciting session that saw the combined classification change throughout. Rea ended the session ahead thanks to a 1.47.344s lap, despite strong opposition from team mate Tom Sykes who looked on course to move into first position until a small mistake at the final chicane on his final lap saw the former champion finish 2nd overall (+0.173s).
The Aruba.it Racing - Ducati SBK Team were close to the top once more, as Davide Giugliano made a dream return to the WorldSBK paddock by posting the 3rd fastest time of the weekend so far (+0.238s), fraction ahead of his team mate Chaz Davies who was 4th(+0.342s) after being fastest in this morning’s FP1.
Leon Haslam (Aprilia Racing Team – Red Devils ) remained 5th, as he had been in the earlier morning session (+0.710s), the rider currently second in the overall points classification finished the first day more than half a second faster than Alex Lowes who powered his Voltcom Crescent Suzuki into 6th  (+1.316s).
Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia) improved his time but remained 7th ahead of David Salom (Team Pedercini), the much faster Leandro Mercado (Barni Racing) and reigning World Champion Sylvain Guintoli (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) who was 10th.
Michel Fabrizio (Althea Racing) finished 12th just behind team mate Matteo Baiocco but just ahead of Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda World Superbike Team), Leon Camier (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) who was the only rider to not improve their time this afternoon, and Jordi Torres (Aprilia Racing Team – Red Devils) who completed the top 15.
All riders have one final chance to make it through into the Tissot-Superpole sessions, with the final FP3 session scheduled to run for a further 45 minutes tomorrow morning.

Cluzel signe le meilleur temps du vendredi à Imola / Cluzel heads into Saturday as the fastest in WSS

Big lap time improvements for WSS riders in FP2 despite temperature rise.

Jules Cluzel (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) will lead the World Supersport riders into tomorrow’s FP3 and sole qualifying session after topping the opening day of on track action. The Frenchman’s time of 1.51.552s on his penultimate lap narrowly edged championship leader Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) who left it until his final lap to improve on his FP1 time.
The Turk who has won the last two World Supersport races to lead the current standings lapped within 0.049s of his championship rival, the Imola winner from 2013 producing a stunning run of consistently fast times throughout both sessions. Sofuoglu was however lucky to escape injury after falling awkwardly during FP2 at turn 2.
Marco Faccani (San Carlo Puccetti Racing) produced a incredible lap in the closing stages of FP2 to finish an impressive 3rd(+0.519s), the current STK600 champion looking comfortable on his home circuit.
American PJ Jacobsen (Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres) is in contention in 4th overall ahead of Lorenzo Zanetti who gave the Italians something to cheer about. The 2014 WSS race winner at Imola finishing the opening day 5th overall.
Ratthapark Wilairot (CORE Motorsport Thailand) was another rider to leave it until the last moment to show his true pace, the Thai rider elevated himself to 6th with his final lap of the 45 minute session.
Alex Baldolini (Race Department ATK#25), Gino Rea (CIA Landlords Insurance Honda), Kyle Smith (Pata Honda World Supersport Team) and Roberto Rolfo (Lorini Honda) completed the top ten.

    ‘79 BMW R100RS – The Bike Lab

Inspiration is a fickle thing. Fickle, and sometimes a little bit crazy. Take the case of this BMW R100RS from the late Seventies. It was made in a very different shape to what you see here but now, almost forty years later, it’s been reborn in a new form. A form that’s been inspired by the same company’s brand new RnineT. Which itself was inspired by bikes like this. Confused? Well don’t be, because if the end result is a ride like this you’ve just got to trust that whatever the path was to get here, it must have been the right one.
    04_04_2015_R100RS_panda_07
“We are a shop based in Barcelona,” says Victor. “We’ve been working for more than a year as The Bike Lab, but we have many years experience with other Spanish shops. Our ethos is simple; we care about the details and we always look for the perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality.”
    04_04_2015_R100RS_panda_06
The brief for the bike itself was simple. “We wanted to make an old bike handle like a new one, while maintaining that classic look.” Victor says that in your average Barcelonian street, you can see plenty of stock boxer BMWs, some customised ones and lots of brand new RnineTs. “We wanted to take the best of each of these genres and build a bike that any of these owners would love to have.”
    04_04_2015_R100RS_panda_05
“We made the custom sub-frame from scratch, along with a suede leather seat, new fenders, handlebars and footrests. We’ve changed almost everything except the tank and the engine.” There’s also a new electrical system with a Motogadget speedo, some simplified handlebar switches and a hidden ignition on the upper yoke. All the lights were replaced, with extra special attention given to the headlight – replete with a custom-made bracket – giving it the illusion of being suspended rather than bolted on.
    04_04_2015_R100RS_panda_03
The bike’s front forks comes from a Ducati Multistrada 1000, which were then polished and painted black. The brakes are gold series Brembo units from an Aprilia Mille, with custom-made aluminium disks with a competition master up top. Rear shocks are custom-made Hagons that slightly raise the BMW’s back to keep the overall line nice and horizontal.
    04_04_2015_R100RS_panda_02
“With almost every part being new, we decided to reinforce the classic look with the paint job. We painted pretty much every component with the lots of black and two really classic greys. The only relief is the yellow of the lamp and the brown of the seat.”
    04_04_2015_R100RS_panda_01
Liking to leave something unique in every custom they build, The boys went to town on the front fender. It’s completely handmade and features a single side mount made from aluminium. “It’s the part that really pops and it distinguishes this BMW from all the rest.”
    04_04_2015_R100RS_panda_04
It’s clear that this build has marked lots of new things in the shop’s evolution;  there’s new people, a new workshop and a new website. It also marks the beginning of the next stage in the company, and if this Bee Em is anything to go by, it’s going to be one hell of a stage.

Join the journey of Jim Glickenhaus’s SCG 003

For many, Jim Glickenhaus is an automotive hero. He’s dedicated a significant proportion of his wealth to various automotive projects – one of which, his Nürburgring 24 Hours-bound SCG 003 endurance racer, is documented in a new twin-volume book published by Waft…
It’s difficult to choose Jim Glickenhaus’s most admired automotive project. He’s the man who commissioned Pininfarina to build the unique 2006 Ferrari P4/5 (and its spin-off racer, the P4/5 Competizione); he also owns an A-list collection of classic cars, and has promised to turn a recent acquisition of his – the Ferrari Modulo concept by Pininfarina – into a road-legal spectacle of 70s style. But perhaps his most ambitious idea has been to create the SCG 003 endurance racer (the third car to be built by Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus), which he will enter in the Nürburgring 24 Hours race this coming May – but not before he’s driven it to the hallowed circuit from Turin. After the race, he plans to continue making use of its road-legal configuration (with a few tweaks to its 'Ring spec, of course) by driving it to the Villa d’Este concours the following week.

A gentleman’s journey to the ’Ring, bound

Now, a new book from the Waft publishing house documents the SCG 003’s course in history, split into two parts. The first showcases the trials and tribulations of creating the car, while the second – due to be shipped in late summer – showcases the road to the 'Ring, and the ultimate outcome of the race. Each two-part book is limited to 500 examples, and includes an alloy plate carrying the buyer's name and the book number, plus there will be a spot for each buyer's name on the bodywork of the car.
