A l’occasion des 24 Heures de Daytona, première manche du WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, les nouvelles Ford GT, BMW M6 GT LM et Ferrari 488 GTE, chaussées par Michelin, effectueront leurs grands débuts en course en catégorie GT LM.
La 54e édition du Rolex 24 at Daytona se déroule ce week-end en Floride. L’épreuve inaugure la saison 2016 du WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (ex Tudor United SportsCar Championship).
A cette occasion, trois nouvelles GTE effectueront leurs premiers tours de roue en course : la Ford GT qui marque le retour officiel et Ford en Endurance, la Ferrari 488 GTE qui remplace la 458 GTE, et la BMW M6 qui célèbre le 100e anniversaire de BMW. Pour cette première, Ford, Ferrari et BMW les ont confiées à leurs pilotes « maison ».
C’est en juin 2015, en marge des 24 Heures du Mans, que Bill Ford en personne avait dévoilé la magnifique Ford GT et officialisé le retour de Ford en Endurance et au Mans, 50 ans après le triplé historique de la Ford GT 40 dans la Sarthe.
Ce grand retour dans la discipline débute ce week-end à Daytona où deux exemplaires, équipés de pneumatiques Michelin, sont engagés en catégorie GT LM par la structure Chip Ganassi Racing : la N°66 pour Joey Hand, Sébastien Bourdais et Dirk Muller, la N°67 pour Ryan Briscoe, Stefan Mücke et Richard Westbrook.
Deux Ford GT à moteur V6 bi-turbo 3,5-Litres seront aussi alignées en Championnat du monde d’Endurance FIA (WEC) et quatre exemplaires pourraient être au départ des 24 Heures du Mans.
Toujours en GT LM, la nouvelle Ferrari 488 GTE (V8 bi-turbo, 3,9-Litres) succède à la 458 GTE qui avait remporté une centaine de victoires depuis 2011. Trois exemplaires sont attendus à Daytona. L’écurie Risi Competizione engage une voiture pour Giancarlo Fisichella, Davide Rigon, Toni Vilander et Olivier Beretta. L’équipe de Houston avait déjà fait débuter les Ferrari 360 GT (2002), Ferrari 430 GT (2005) et Ferrari 458 (2011) !
La Ferrari 488 de la Scuderia Corsa est partagée par Alessandro Pier-Guidi, Daniel Serra, Alexandre Prémat et Memo Rojas. Enfin, la N°72 de SMP Racing est confiée à Viktor Shayar, Gimmi Bruni, Andrea Bertolini et James Calado. Les trois Ferrari 488 GTE sont chaussées de pneus Michelin.
La nouvelle BMW M6 GT LM (V8, bi-turbo, 4,4-Litres), qui succède à la Z4 GTE, débute elle aussi ce week-end à Daytona avec le BW Team RLL. Deux exemplaires, également équipés de pneus Michelin, sont engagés pour Bill Auberlen, Augusto Farfus, Dirk Werner et Bruno Spengler (N°25) et Lucas Luhr, Kumo Wittmer, John Edwards et Grahama Rahal.
Les BMW M6 GT LM ne devraient disputer que le championnat nord-américain d’Endurance 2016, alors que la Ford GT et la Ferrari 488 GTE sont attendues en Europe fin mars pour le Prologue du FIA WEC.
Avec deux Corvette C7.R (Garcia/Rockenfeller/Magnussen et Gavin/Fässler/Milner) et deux Porsche 911 RSR (Pilet/Estre/Tandy et Bamber/Christensen/Makowiecki), Michelin équipe au total 11 voitures en catégorie GT LM.
The 2016 24 Hours of Daytona, round one of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, will see the Michelin-equipped Ford GT, BMW M6 GT LM and Ferrari 488 GTE all make their race debut in the GT LM class.
The 54th Rolex 24 at Daytona in Florida, USA, will kick of this year’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (ex-TUSCC).
The race will see three new GTE cars compete for the first time, namely the Ford GT (which mark’s the make’s return to endurance racing), the Ferrari 488 GTE (which replaces the 458 GTE) and the BMW M6, as the German manufacturer celebrates its 100th anniversary. All three models will be in the hands of factory crews.
It was at Le Mans last June that Bill Ford himself unveiled the magnificent new Ford GT which is spearheading the make’s return to endurance racing, 50 years after the Ford GT 40’s resounding one-two-three finish in the French 24-hour race.
Two Michelin-equipped, Chip Ganassi Racing-run cars will be at Daytona for Joey Hand/Sébastien Bourdais/Dirk Muller (N°66) and Ryan Briscoe/Stefan Mücke/Richard Westbrook (N°67).
Two 3.5-litre bi-turbo V6-engined Ford GTs will also appear in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC),with four cars for the 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours.
The GT LM battle will also feature the Ferrari 488 GTE (V8 bi-turbo, 3.9 litres) which succeeds from the 458 GTE, winner of some 100 races since 2011. There will be three cars at Daytona, including a Risi Competizione machine for Giancarlo Fisichella/Davide Rigon/Toni Vilander/Olivier Beretta. The Houston-based squad was also first to race the Ferrari 360 GT (in 2002), the Ferrari 430 GT (2005) and the Ferrari 458 (2011).
The similar Scuderia Corsa car will be shared by Alessandro Pier-Guidi/Daniel Serra/Alexandre Prémat/Memo Rojas, while the SMP Racing 488 GTE (N°72) will be in the hands of Viktor Shayar/Gimmi Bruni/Andrea Bertolini/James Calado.
The new BMW M6 GT LM (V8, bi-turbo, 4.4 litres) takes over from the Z4 GTE and there will be two examples run by BMW Team RLL for Bill Auberlen/Augusto Farfus/Dirk Werner/Bruno Spengler (N°25) and Lucas Luhr/Kumo Wittmer/John Edwards/Graham Rahal.
The German car is only expected to contest North America’s endurance racing championship in 2016, but both the Ford GT and the Ferrari 488 GTE are expected to attend the WEC’s prologue test in France at the end of March.
