FIA WEC 32 engagés au championnat FIA WEC 2016 / 32 entries for the 2016 FIA WEC

Porsche, Audi, Toyota, Ford, Ferrari et Aston Martin. Six constructeurs automobiles et 32 voitures sont engagés en Championnat du monde d’Endurance FIA 2016. Michelin sera opposé à une concurrence redoutable dans toutes les catégories.

La 4e édition du Championnat du monde d’Endurance FIA a été présentée vendredi par Gérard Neveu (Directeur du WEC) et Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones (Président de la Commission Endurance à la FIA), lors d’une grande conférence de presse organisée à Paris. 

 

Jean Todt, Président de la FIA, n’était pas présent, mais a rappelé, par visio-conférence, que « l’Endurance fait partie du patrimoine de la FIA. » Plus de 600 000 spectateurs et 130 millions de téléspectateurs ont suivi la saison FIA WEC 2015 et accompagné Porsche/Michelin vers les titres mondiaux Constructeurs et Pilotes.

La campagne 2016 s’annonce elle aussi sous les meilleurs auspices avec 32 engagés à l’année, un chiffre stable, 12 nations représentées et six constructeurs officiellement impliqués dans ce championnat.

En LM P1, Porsche remet ses titres en jeu face à Audi et Toyota qui ont redoublé d’efforts à l’intersaison pour revenir au niveau de la marque de Stuttgart. Michelin est partenaire de ces trois constructeurs dans la catégorie reine où, les prototypes thermiques Rebellion R-One et CLM P1/01 passent à la concurrence pneumatique. 

De la concurrence, il y en aura aussi en catégorie LM P2 entre constructeurs de châssis (Oreca, BR01, Ligier, Alpine, Gibson). En revanche, les 10 prototypes attendus devraient tous être motorisés par Nissan. G-Drive Racing défendra sa couronne avec une seule voiture (Oreca05) face aux Américain Extreme Speed Motorsports, aux Russes SMP Racing et au team français Signatech-Alpine. L’équipe britannique Manor, engagée en F1, le team mexicain RGR by Morand et chinois Baxi DC Racing débuteront en FIA WEC.

 

Sept LM GTE sont attendues chez les « Pro » où Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones nous promet des voitures plus rapides, plus performantes et plus spectaculaires. « C’est le principal changement du championnat cette saison ». Champion en titre, Porsche sera représenté par le team Dempsey-Proton Racing dont la 911 RSR/Michelin sera opposé à deux nouvelles Ferrari 488 GTE/Michelin AF Corse, deux nouvelles Ford GT/Michelin Ford Chip Ganassi UK et deux Aston Martin Vantage V8 GTE désormais équipées de pneus de marque différente.

Seulement six engagés en LM GTE Am où deux nouvelles équipes font leur apparition : KCMG avec une Porsche 911 RSR/Michelin et Gulf Racing (Porsche 911 RSR/Michelin). Il y aura aussi une Ferrari 458 AF Corse, une Aston Martin Vantage officielles et la Corvette C7.R de Larbre Compétition. 

La saison débutera à Silverstone (GB) le 17 avril, pour se conclure à Bahreïn le 19 novembre.

With Porsche, Audi, Toyota, Ford, Ferrari and Aston Martin all on this year’s entry list, the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) will feature six different makes and 32 cars, with Michelin facing stiff opposition in all four classes.

The fourth FIA WEC was presented at a press conference in Paris, France, on Friday, by the championship’s director Gérard Neveu and Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones, chairman of the FIA’s endurance commission. FIA president Jean Todt, who joined the show by video conference, underlines that the discipline is part of the federation’s heritage. 

More than 600,000 spectators and 130 million television viewers watched Porsche/Michelin collect the 2015 Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ titles, and this year’s series promises to be just as exciting, with 32 cars – the same number as last season – and six carmakers officially involved.

 

In LM P1, Porsche will defend its crowns against Audi and Toyota who redoubled their efforts over the winter break in their bid to stem the Stuttgart firm’s recent form. All three of the premier class’s teams compete on Michelin rubber, while the Rebellion R-One and CLM P1/01 internal combustion-engined prototypes have switched to a rival tyre brand. 

The LM P2 battle is likely to be equally thrilling, with Oreca, BR01, Ligier, Alpine and Gibson all represented as chassis makers. It is probable that all 10 cars will have Nissan power. G-Drive Racing will defend its title with a single Oreca05 against America’s Extreme Speed Motorsports, Russia’s SMP Racing and French team Signatech-Alpine. Britain-based Manor, which also competes in F1, Mexican outfit RGR by Morand and China’s Baxi DC Racing are all poised to make their WEC debuts.

 

There are seven LM GTE Pro entries and Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones has pledged that the cars will be both faster and more spectacular. The outgoing champion Porsche will be represented by Dempsey-Proton Racing’s 911 RSR/Michelin which will face opposition from two new Michelin-equipped Ferrari 488 GTEs (AF Corse), two new Michelin-equipped Ford GTs (Ford Chip Ganassi UK) and two Aston Martin Vantage V8 GTEs which will appear with another tyre brand.

Only six LM GTE Am cars feature on the list but two new Porsche 911 RSR/Michelin teams have joined the class (KCMG and Gulf Racing). There will also be an AF Corse Ferrari 458 AF Corse, a factory Aston Martin Vantage and Larbre Compétition’s Corvette C7.R. 

The 2016 season will kick off at Silverstone, England, on April 17, and conclude  in Bahrain on November 19.
