WRC Suède : Michelin et ses partenaires aux sports d’hiver ; winter sports for Michelin and its partners

Depuis 2012, Jari-Matti Latvala et Sébastien Ogier se sont partagés les victoires au Rallye de Suède, mais Andreas Mikkelsen, Thierry Neuville ou encore Mads Ostberg sont passés tout près du succès. L’édition 2016 s’annonce encore brûlante dans les forêts peu enneigées du Värmland où Michelin a déjà remporté 25 victoires mondiales.

Il y a un an, le 63^e Rallye de Suède nous avait offert un suspense incroyable jusqu’aux derniers mètres de course. Les trois leaders - Mikkelsen, Ogier et Neuville - étaient en effet groupés en moins de cinq secondes au départ de l’ultime spéciale...

Pour sa 40^e édition en Championnat du monde des Rallyes FIA, le Rallye de Suède devrait encore nous proposer un grand spectacle dans les forêts, hélas, peu enneigées du Värmland. La vague de froid qui a conservé la Suède et la Norvège à -20°C une bonne partie du mois de janvier a laissé place à une période de redoux ayant fait fondre l’épais manteau d’hiver.

Malgré tout, les prévisions indiquent de probables chutes de neige dans la région d’Hagfors la semaine prochaine avec des températures à peine négatives. De quoi revêtir de blanc les pistes forestières (et pénaliser Ogier, le premier concurrent en piste !), mais sans doute pas de quoi reconstituer une couche de glace suffisamment épaisse. Les seconds passages risquent donc de se dérouler sur terre/cailloux, et de mettre à rude épreuve les pneus cloutés.

Depuis quatre ans, c’est « à toi, à moi » entre Sébastien Ogier et Jari-Matti Latvala au Rallye de Suède. Le Finlandais visera une 4^e victoire à Karlstad pour se rapprocher un peu plus des cinq succès de Grönholm et Waldegard. En fait, après un Rallye Monte-Carlo désastreux, Jari-Matti Latvala est presque condamné à la victoire s’il ne veut pas de nouveau courir après les points toute la saison...

Avec Ogier, Latvala et Mikkelsen, l’équipe Volkswagen Motorsport/Michelin est encore bien « outillée » pour ce rallye. Après une première victoire mondiale un peu chanceuse en Espagne l’an passé, Andreas Mikkelsen est surmotivé pour s’imposer sur la neige où les Norvégiens n’ont plus gagné depuis 2005 !

Son compatriote Mads Ostberg rêve lui aussi de succéder à Petter Solberg. Cette année, le Norvégien retrouve la Ford Fiesta RS WRC/Michelin, une voiture qu’il avait menée trois fois d’affilée sur le podium en 2011, 2012 et 2013. Il faudra donc compter avec Mads ce week-end, ainsi qu’avec Thierry Neuville au volant de la nouvelle Hyundai i20 WRC/Michelin, ou encore Kris Meeke sur la DS3 WRC/Michelin.

A suivre aussi les débuts d’Eric Camilli (Ford/Michelin) sur cette épreuve, ainsi que ceux de Craig Breen (Citroën/Michelin) au sein du team Abu Dhabi WRT. Hayden Paddon, nominé par Hyundai sur la nouvelle i20 WRC/Michelin, a promis d’attaquer, de même que l’Estonien Ott Tanak (Ford). A suivra aussi les débuts en World Rally Cars de Yazeed Al-Rajhi (Fiesta/Michelin) et le retour tant attendu d’Henning Solberg (Fiesta/Michelin).

En WRC-2, on salive déjà du match au sommet entre les Skoda Fabia R5/Michelin officielles d’Esapekka Lappi et de Pontus Tidemand, et les nouvelles Ford Fiesta R5/Michelin d’Elfyn Evans et d’Eyvind Brynildsen. Un match qui pourrait être arbitré par Sander Pärn (Skoda R5), Anders Grondal (Fiesta R5) et Teemu Suninen (Skoda R5). Dans cette catégorie, on suivra attentivement les débuts du champion d’Europe Junior Emil Bergqvist (DS3 R5/Michelin), d’Ole-Christian Veiby (Skoda R5/Michelin) et de Marius Aasen (Fiesta R5).

Peu de modifications concernant le parcours (26% renouvelé). La grande nouveauté est le parc d’assistance principal basé à Karlstad, associé à des Tyre Fitting Zone à Kirkenaer et Hagfors. Les concurrents devront parcourir plus de 100 km matin et soir pour rejoindre les spéciales, et surtout, n’auront aucune assistance extérieure dans la journée.

Although Rally Sweden has been won exclusively by Jari-Matti Latvala and Sébastien Ogier since 2012, Andreas Mikkelsen, Thierry Neuville and Mads Ostberg have all come close to the victory in recent years. The 2016 event promises to be just as entertaining in the snowy Värmland where Michelin has already notched up 25 WRC wins.

Last year’s visit to Sweden provided an exceptionally close contest which went down to the wire as Mikkelsen, Ogier and Neuville lined up for the last stage covered by less than five seconds.

There is every chance we will see more of the same this time round, despite a lack of snow in the Värmland forests due to the recent thaw that followed January’s freezing temperatures which reached as low as -20°C in the region.

That’s said, the forecasters are predicting snow and slightly sub-zero temperatures in the Hagfors area next week. Fresh snow, however little, could well penalise Ogier who will be first on the road, but the second passes are likely to be quite rocky, and that will put the competitors’ studded tyres to a harsh test.

The past four visits to Sweden have seen Ogier and Latvala monopolise the victory and the Finn will be keen to notch up a fourth success in Karlstad to take a step closer to the five first places collected by Grönholm and Waldegard. And after his disastrous Rallye Monte-Carlo, a win seems the only way for him to avoid having to play catch-up once again this season.

With Ogier, Latvala and Mikkelsen in its ranks, Volkswagen Motorsport/Michelin seems to have plenty of trump cards in hand. Indeed, the latter is buoyed by his maiden world class victory last year in Spain and would love to become the first Norwegian to win the snowy fixture since 2005.

His compatriot Mads Ostberg would dearly love to follow in the footsteps of Petter Solberg, too. This year, he is back in the Ford Fiesta RS WRC/Michelin that helped him claim Rally Sweden podiums in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Other likely front-runners include Thierry Neuville in the new Hyundai i20 WRC/Michelin and Kris Meeke (DS3 WRC/Michelin).

Rally Sweden rookies Eric Camilli (Ford/Michelin) and Craig Breen (Citroën/Michelin, Abu Dhabi WRT) will be out to find their marks, while Hyundai’s other nominee Hayden Paddon and Ott Tanak (Ford) have both promised to push. Meanwhile, it will be Yazeed Al-Rajhi’s first outing in a World Rally Car (Fiesta/Michelin) and Henning Solberg is making a guest appearance (Fiesta/Michelin).

There’s a mouth-watering battle to look forward to in WRC2, as well, with factory Michelin-equipped Skoda Fabia R5s for Esapekka Lappi and Pontus Tidemand, and new-spec Michelin-shod Ford Fiesta R5s for Elfyn Evans and Eyvind Brynildsen. The list continues with Sander Pärn (Skoda R5), Anders Grondal (Fiesta R5), Teemu Suninen (Skoda R5), the reigning European Junior champion Emil Bergqvist (DS3 R5/Michelin), Ole-Christian Veiby (Skoda R5/Michelin) and Marius Aasen (Fiesta R5).

A quarter of the route has been revised compared with 2015 and the main service park has moved to Karlstad. This means road sections of more than 100km to and from the stages and there won’t be any remote servicing opportunities at all, except for Tyre Fitting Zones in Kirkenaer and Hagfors.
