Il y a 20 ans, le Finlandais Tommi Mäkinen a remporté la première de ses trois victoires argentines au volant d’une Mitsubishi Lancer Evo III/Michelin devant la Ford/Michelin de Carlos Sainz et la Subaru de Kenneth Eriksson.
En Argentine, le rallye est une véritable religion qui conduit parfois à tous les excès, en témoignent certaines images de l’édition 1996 où les voitures se frayent un chemin au milieu d’aficionados surexcités.
Les pilotes ont dû monter au créneau auprès des organisateurs afin qu’ils prennent des mesures pour contrôler la foule et que le rallye puisse se poursuivre en toute sécurité sur les 516 km chronométrés.
Champion du monde en titre, l’Ecossais Colin McRae (Subaru) fut rapidement éliminé sur sortie de route, laissant ses deux équipiers Kenneth Eriksson et Piero Liatti à la poursuite du premier leader Tommi Mäkinen (Mitsubishi/Michelin). De son côté, l’Espagnol fut retardé par des ennuis de transmission sur sa Ford Escort/Michelin avant d’être dépanné par son équipier Bruno Thiry.
Malgré une erreur dans le parcours et un détour forcé d’un kilomètre « à vue » lors de la dernière étape, Tommi Mäkinen a dominé l’épreuve pour s’imposer à Cordoba devant Carlos Sainz qui a profité des ennuis mécaniques des Subaru Impreza en fin de rallye. Kenneth Eriksson n’a pu faire mieux que troisième, terminant devant le jeune britannique Richard Burns (Mitsubishi) grippé, et le pilote privé italien Pianezzola sur une Toyota Celica GT4.
Cette année-là, Toyota purgeait sa peine d’un an de suspension pour tricherie et n’était représenté en WRC que par des engagements privés. Tommi Mäkinen, actuel patron de l’équipe Toyota, a remporté le premier de ses trois Rallye d’Argentine consécutifs et conforté sa première place au championnat après deux succès en début de saison (Monte-Carlo et Suède).
Le Finlandais décrochera son premier titre mondial fin 1996 avec Michelin après deux autres succès en Finlande et en Australie.

Rallying is practically a religion in Argentina and this occasionally led to some excessive fervour in the past, as can be seen in some images of the 1996 event depicting cars driving through masses of enthusiastic spectators.
The situation was so preoccupying that the drivers appealed to the organisers to take measures to control the crowds so that the 516km could be run safely.
The defending world champion Colin McRae crashed out early on, leaving Subaru team-mates Kenneth Eriksson and Piero Liatti to chase pace-setter Tommi Mäkinen (Mitsubishi/Michelin), while Sainz was delayed by transmission trouble before repairs could be made with help from fellow Ford driver Bruno Thiry.
In spite of a route error which forced crews to navigate ‘blind’ for a kilometre during the final leg, Mäkinen dominated to the Cordoba finish to beat Sainz who inherited second spot after Eriksson suffered late mechanical problems. British youngster Richard Burns (Mitsubishi) overcame flu to clinch fourth, ahead of Italian youngster Pianezzola (Toyota Celica GT4).
That was the year Toyota was forced to sit out the championship as punishment for cheating and the Japanese make was only represented by privateers. Tommi Mäkinen, who is now boss at Toyota WRC, followed up his first win in Argentina with two more over the next two years. The result also strengthened his lead in the 1996 championship after earlier victories in Monaco and Sweden.
