José María López maîtrise la mythique Nürburgring Nordschleife et remporte aujourd’hui les deux manches de la FIA WTCC Race of Germany. Le pilote Citroën est remonté de la 9e place sur la grille en Course d’ouverture, avant de profiter de la pole position DHL pour réaliser le doublé à l’issue de la Course principale, soit sa cinquième victoire cette saison.
Tiago Monteiro menait la Course d’ouverture au volant de sa Honda, jusqu’à ce qu’un accident spectaculaire ne le contraigne à l’abandon à quelques encablures de l’arrivée. Yvan Muller fut également éliminé dans cet incident, mais les deux hommes n’ont subi aucune blessure physique.
Tom Chilton réalise le doublé en WTCC Trophy tout en se classant 2e, puis 3e. Il remporte à cette occasion le TAG Heuer Best Lap Trophy – et une montre TAG Heuer – pour son chrono en 8m47.586s signé sur les 25,378 kilomètres du tracé. Norbert Michelisz, enfin, accroche deux Top 3 pour le compte de Honda, tandis que les écuries Polestar et LADA parviennent à entrer dans les points.
La prochaine étape sur le Moscow Raceway, en Russie, le mois prochain, marquera la mi-saison et López s’y présentera avec 69 points d’avance sur Monteiro, tandis que Rob Huff et Michelisz sont en embuscade.
COURSE D’OUVERTURE : LÓPEZ REMONTE DANS LA HIÉRARCHIE ET S’IMPOSEJosé María López s’impose dans la Course d’ouverture de la FIA WTCC Race of Germany après qu’un spectaculaire accident dans le dernier tour a éliminé Tiago Monteiro et Yvan Muller. Depuis la pole position, Monteiro mène les deux premiers tours sur le Nürburgring, emmenant les Citroën de Muller et López, revenues aux 2e et 3e rang en ayant notamment profité de l’abandon de Thed Björk à la fin de la boucle du tracé Grand Prix en raison d’une fuite d’huile sur sa Volvo. Muller tente ensuite de déborder Monteiro à la fin du tour, mais le pilote Honda garde l’avantage. Monteiro cède néanmoins son leadership dans le troisième lorsqu’il percute le rail et emmène Muller dans sa chute. López parvient pour sa part à passer au travers. López s’impose finalement avec une demi-seconde d’avance sur Tom Chilton, dont la Citroën avait provisoirement pris le meilleur sur le champion du monde en titre à l’entame du dernier tour. Il décroche malgré tout la victoire en WTCC Trophy. Norbert Michelisz complète le podium pour Honda, tandis que Rob Huff se classe 4e après s’être élancé depuis la 16e place sur la grille. Deuxième en début de parcours, Mehdi Bennani commit une erreur et rétrograda. Il termine ainsi 5e devant les LADA de Hugo Valente et Gabriele Tarquini. Fredrik Ekblom et Nicky Catsburg suivent, tandis que Sabine Schmitz est une superbe 10e pour son retour en WTCC, à domicile, sur son circuit fétiche. Tom Coronel, enfin, occupait la 5e place lorsqu’il sortit de la piste, le privant d’un départ en Course principale.
COURSE PRINCIPALE : LA CINQUIÈME DU ROI LÓPEZ SUR LA NORDSCHLEIFEJosé María López fait coup double dans la FIA WTCC Race of Germany en remportant la Course principale sur la Nürburgring Nordscheife, son cinquième succès en 2016, au terme d’une âpre bataille avec Norbert Michelisz. Le pilote Honda Michelisz, promu en première ligne de la grille, prend un meilleur envol que le poleman López et s’empare des commandes au premier virage. López lui répond immédiatement et retrouve son leadership en prenant la trajectoire extérieure dans les S Schumacher. Il mène avec trois secondes d’avance à la fin du premier tour, mais cet avantage retombe sous la seconde à l’issue du second. L’écart entre la Citroën et la Honda se réduit encore dans la dernière, et López l’emporte finalement avec un faible écart de 0,435 secondes. Tom Chilton domine une nouvelle fois le WTCC Trophy et se hisse encore sur le podium général, en 3e position. Rob Huff était très proche de son compatriote dans la dernière boucle, allant même au contact, mais doit se contenter de la 4e place devant Mehdi Bennani, qui a pris le meilleur sur Catsburg pour se classer 5e. Polestar Cyan Racing a disputé une bonne course, ses deux pilotes Fredrik Ekblom et Thed Björk remontant respectivement 7e et 8e après avoir pris la mesure des LADA de Gabriele Tarquini et Hugo Valente. Sabine Schmitz 11e, termine cette fois à la porte des points.
HONDA REMPORTE LE WTCC MAC3 SUR LA NORDSCHLEIFEHonda bat Citroën sur un tour de la Nürburgring Nordschleife, théâtre de la dernière édition du Manufacturers Against the Clock qui anime les meetings du Championnat du Monde FIA des Voitures de Tourisme. Norbert Michelisz emmène ses équipier chez Honda, Tiago Monteiro et Rob Huff, vers un chrono de 8m47.920s, à l’issue d’un MAC3 exceptionnellement disputé sur une boucle en raison de la longueur de 25,278 kilomètres de la Nordschleife. “Les voitures sont très proches, c’est donc un excellent résultat, confie Alessandro Mariani, le patron du team Honda. Nous savions avant le départ que nous devions profiter de l’aspiration dans la longue ligne droite, mais dans la première partie du circuit ce n’est pas évident de rouler proches les uns des autres. Les pilotes se sont donc réunis avant cette portion rapide et ce fut une belle stratégie rondement menée car nous avons su profiter de cette opportunité qui s’offrait à nous.” Citroën, pour lequel Yvan Muller guida José María López et Mehdi Bennani, de nouveau nominé par le constructeur, échoue à seulement 1,564 secondes, offrant à Honda sa deuxième victoire cette saison dans ce contre-la-montre inspiré du Tour de France cycliste. LADA n’a pas été en mesure de participer au MAC3 après que l’une de ses trois voitures, celle d’Hugo Valente, ait été endommagée dans un accident en qualifications.
« C’est vraiment particulier de remporter les deux courses sur ce circuit, confie López. J’avais déjà réussi cela en 2014 à Termas de Río Hondo, mais je n’osais pas l’imaginer ici, surtout avec 80 kg de lest. Je n’ai pas vraiment savouré la première course, car je n’ai pas été chercher cette victoire. Je ne parvenais pas à prendre le dessus sur Yvan dans la ligne droite, car il bénéficiait lui aussi de l’aspiration de Tiago. J’ai vu Tiago taper le rail, c’était vraiment impressionnant et je n’ai eu qu’une fraction de seconde pour réagir. Je suis content que Tiago et Yvan s’en soient sortis indemnes. Dans la course principale, j’ai pris un bon départ, mais celui de Norbi a été encore meilleur et j’étais surpris de le voir devant moi. J’ai pu reprendre l’avantage et ensuite j’ai cherché à maintenir un bon rythme en préservant la voiture et les pneus. Alors que nous atteignons le cap de la mi-saison, les 55 points marqués ce week-end me donnent un énorme coup de boost au classement général. Ce sont maintenant les autres qui vont devoir prendre des risques pour revenir. »
José María López ruled the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife by winning both encounters at FIA WTCC Race of Germany today. The Citroën driver charged through from ninth on the grid to claim the Opening Race laurels before converting his DHL pole position into victory number five of 2016 by taking the Main Race triumph.
Tiago Monteiro had been leading the Opening Race in his Honda only for a spectacular crash to put him out nearing the end of the final lap. Yvan Muller was also eliminated in the incident although both drivers were given the all-clear following medical checks.
Tom Chilton was a double winner in the WTCC Trophy and second and third overall in the two action-packed races. He also landed the TAG Heuer Best Lap Trophy – and a TAG Heuer watch – for his 8m47.586s charge around the 25.378-kilometre track. Norbert Michelisz was twice in the top three for the factory Honda team, while the works Polestar and LADA squads also scored.
Heading to the halfway stage of the season at the Moscow Raceway in Russia next month, López holds a 69-point championship lead over Monteiro with Rob Huff and Michelisz evenly matched.
OPENING RACE REPORT: LÓPEZ CHARGES THROUGH THE PACK TO LAND VICTORYJosé María López picked up victory in the Opening Race after a dramatic final-lap crash eliminated Tiago Monteiro and Yvan Muller. Monteiro had led from pole position through the first two laps of the Nürburgring, the Citroëns of Muller and López worked their way up to second and third, helped by Thed Björk pulling out of second place at the end of the grand prix loop on lap two with a technical issue on his Volvo. Muller tried a passing move on Monteiro at the end of the second lap, but the Honda driver stayed ahead as Muller briefly got two wheels on the grass. However, Monteiro would go off out of the lead on the final lap, hitting the barriers hard and ending up in the middle of the track. Muller was left with nowhere else to go and made contact with the Portuguese, while López managed to sneak through into the lead. López took victory by just over half a second in front of fellow Citroën driver Tom Chilton, who had briefly passed the double world champion on the grand prix loop on the last lap. Though he missed the outright win, Chilton did take the WTCC Trophy victory. Norbert Michelisz completed the podium for Honda, with Rob Huff finishing fourth from P16 on the grid. Having been second early on, Mehdi Bennani ran wide and slipped back into the pack, eventually finishing fifth ahead of LADA drivers Hugo Valente and Gabriele Tarquini. Fredrik Ekblom (Volvo-Polestar) and Nicky Catsburg (LADA) were next, while Sabine Schmitz took P10 – and a world championship point – on her return to WTCC action at her home circuit. Tom Coronel had been fifth when he went off on the final lap, ruling him out of starting third on the grid for the Main Race.
MAIN RACE REPORT: HIGH FIVE FOR NORDSCHLEIFE KING LÓPEZJosé María López doubled in Germany by winning the Main Race at the Nürburgring Nordscheife for his fifth victory of the season after a battle with Norbert Michelisz. Honda driver Michelisz, promoted to the front row of the grid, made a better start than pole-sitter López to take the lead down the inside of Turn 1. López quickly responded though and reclaimed first place around the outside of the Schumacher S. He led by three seconds at the end of the first lap, but that advantage was slashed to less than a second at the end of lap two. The gap between the Citroën and the Honda would come down again on the third and final tour but López held on to win by 0.435 seconds. Tom Chilton was again the top WTCC Trophy driver and again on the outright podium in third. Rob Huff got very close to his fellow Briton on the final lap – even making contact – but had to settle for fourth. Mehdi Bennani passed Nicky Catsburg to finish fifth. Polestar Cyan Racing enjoyed a strong race, with its two drivers, Fredrik Ekblom and Thed Björk, working their way up to seventh and eighth respectively, past the LADAs of Gabriele Tarquini and Hugo Valente. Sabine Schmitz finished just outside the points on this occasion in P11 despite a puncture on the final lap.
HONDA SCORES NARROW NORDSCHLEIFE WTCC MAC3 WINHonda defeated Citroën over one lap of the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife in the latest the FIA World Touring Car Championship Manufacturers Against the Clock battle on Friday afternoon. Norbert Michelisz led Honda team-mates Tiago Monteiro and Rob Huff to a time of 8m47.920s to bag Honda 10 Manufacturers’ championship points following its narrow defeat of Citroën. Citroën, with Yvan Muller guiding José María López and nominated third driver Mehdi Bennani, would fall 1.564 seconds short after a close battle around the lap, handing Honda its second outright win of the year in the Tour de France-inspired team time trial competition. “The cars are very close so it’s a good result,” said Honda team head Alessandro Mariani. “We thought before we could push each other on the long straight, but on the previous part of the circuit it’s not easy to stay close to the car in front, so we joined the cars before the last straight, which we did, and it was a good strategy and a good job. The guys did a good job and we took the opportunity.” Uniquely, WTCC MAC3 was run over one lap of the 25.278-kilometre Nürburgring Nordschleife rather than the usual two, which put even more pressure on the drivers not to make a mistake by cracking under pressure. LADA was unable to take part in WTCC MAC3 after one of its three cars, that of Hugo Valente, was damaged in an accident in the preceding qualifying session.
“Of course if there is a place where you want to win both races, you want to win everywhere of course, but here it’s really special,” said López. “I was very cautious with the celebrations. I like to think you can be a good winner and a good loser and today the first race I take the profit of an accident otherwise it was going to be very difficult. I couldn’t take advantage of the slipstream because Yvan was taking the slipstream of Tiago so even if I was quicker my chances were disappearing because it was very difficult. I’m really happy to have the first win and it’s an extremely important boost for the championship for me. I’m also really happy Tiago and Yvan are okay.”
