Flashback to stage one of the Monte Carlo on a bitterly cold morning in January that saw Citroën’s Sébastien Loeb/Daniel Elena get the year’s action under way by powering off the start line of ‘Le Moulinon-Antraigues’. Symbolically, the 37km test was won by Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia in the brand new Polo R WRC/Michelin…
Now, exactly 10 months later, Loeb has retired from the sport, while his former team-mate and debutants Volkswagen were the dominant forces by far in this year’s Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ championships.
The 13-round competition provided fans with approximately 4,635 kilometres of competitive action, on snow, ice, dirt and asphalt, and in sunshine, rain and wind. By our calculations, we attended more than 100 Stop Controls to share the thrills, spills and atmosphere with you, our visitors. In total, our website has published some 400 news stories and features since the beginning of the year.
A quick look back at our Word folder recalls that 2013 was the year Belgian youngster Thierry Neuville came of age to challenge the established names and clinch the season’s silver medal. We also charted the progress of Hyundai Motorsport as it prepared for the brand’s return to world class rallying… in about nine weeks’ time!
Meanwhile, the sport saw ex-F1 racer Robert Kubica make an immediate mark at WRC level and eventually clinch the new WRC-2 championship. The class’s popularity has endorsed the value of the new R5 cars which have proved not only great to watch but also a good stepping stone for ambitious drivers like the Pole, Elfyn Evans and Hayden Paddon who all made their debut in WRC machinery in 2013.
There were titles, too, for upcoming Frenchman Sébastien Chardonnet (WRC-3) and Swede Pontus Tidemund (WRC Academy) who will hopefully continue to entertain us with their talent in the years ahead.
Last but not least, Michelin’s partner crews used approximately 13,000 tyres in the course of the season. That may sound like a lot, but it is important to note that it represents a saving of around 16 percent over 2012, in-line with the objective set for the WRC.
But as one world championship comes to a close, it’s already time to start looking ahead to the next. While teams put the finishing touches to their driver line-ups for 2014, pre-season testing is only weeks away. And when everyone reconvenes for the ‘Monte’ in Gap, France, it will seem like yesterday that we watched Loeb roar away from the village of Le Moulinon!
Petit retour sur la spéciale « Le Moulinon-Antraigues » où il faisait un peu plus froid qu’aujourd’hui. Sébastien Loeb avait alors donné le coup d’envoi de la saison 2013 mercredi 16 janvier à 9h03 précises, mais c’est un autre Sébastien, Ogier, qui avait remporté cette première spéciale 2013 (37,10 km) pour les débuts de la Volkswagen Polo R WRC/Michelin.
Dix mois plus tard, Loeb s’est retiré du WRC alors qu’Ogier, Ingrassia et Volkswagen ont raflé les titres mondiaux Pilotes, Copilotes et Constructeurs après avoir dominé la saison autant que Loeb, Elena et Citroën avaient pu le faire ces dernières années.
Les 13 rallyes mondiaux ont enthousiasmé les fans tout au long des 4635 kilomètres de spéciales sur neige, glace, terre, asphalte, boue, sous le soleil, la pluie, le vent… Selon nos calculs, nous avons été à plus de 100 arrivées de spéciales pour partager les joies, les peines, l’ambiance du WRC avec vous via plus de 400 articles rédigés depuis le début de la saison.
En parcourant toutes ces lignes, on s’aperçoit que 2013 fut aussi l’année du Belge Thierry Neuville, vice-champion du monde et capable de relever le challenge en 2014 pour le retour de Hyundai Motorsport en WRC dans tout juste neuf semaines !
On a aussi vu l’ancien pilote de F1 Robert Kubica prendre rapidement ses marques en rallye mondial pour décrocher le titre WRC-2, une catégorie toujours très fournie qui a vu l’apparition des nouvelles R5 spectaculaires et ludiques pour des pilotes ambitieux comme Kubica, Elfyn Evans, Hayden Paddon qui ont aussi effectué leurs premiers pas au volant de WRC.
Et puis il y a eu les titres du Français Sébastien Chardonnet en WRC-3 et du Suédois Pontus Tidemand en Junior-WRC, qui vont sans doute leur servir de tremplin pour les années à venir.
Et les pneus ? Les partenaires de Michelin (23 titres Constructeurs, 21 Pilotes depuis 1973) en Championnat du monde ont consommé environ 13 000 pneumatiques cette saison. Cela peut paraître beaucoup, mais c’est une réduction d’environ 16% par rapport à 2012, en phase avec les objectifs fixés en WRC.
Mais la saison 2014 est déjà là. Teams et pilotes sont en grandes négociations pour l’attribution des volants officiels, les tests du Rallye Monte-Carlo vont débuter dans trois semaines. Et quand on se retrouvera à Gap pour le Shakedown du « Monte-Carl’ » mardi 14 janvier, et bien on s’apercevra sans doute que Loeb au départ du Moulinon, c’était hier…
