Dakar, Leg 7: Sainz claims another stage win / étape 7 : Seconde victoire de Sainz

Carlos Sainz (Buggy SMG) collected his second stage win since the start of the 2014 Dakar to beat a pack of chasing Mini ALL4 Racings led by Al-Attiyah, Roma and Peterhansel. The latter has moved up to second overall after a time penalty was handed to Orlando Terranova.

After Saturday’s rainy rest day in Salta, the bivouac’s dwellers woke up to muddy conditions to get the competition’s second week off to an interesting start. Salta is also the beginning of the line of the famous Train to the Clouds (Tren de la Nubes) which takes passengers through the Andes to the Chilean border at an altitude of more than 4,200 metres. The line features 29 bridges, 21 tunnels and 13 viaducts, and the two-way journey takes 17 hours.

Today’s 763km loop though the Salta region lasted only 4h43m28s for the stage’s winner Sainz whose second win of the event takes his score on the Dakar to a total of 27, placing him fourth in the record books, behind Vatanen (50), Peterhansel (30) and Ickx (29). “We went well,” he reported. The stage was very varied: narrow and twisty in places at the beginning, but then wider towards the end.”

High in the natural habitat of lamas and vicunas, the SMG Buggy driver succeeded in outpacing a train of no fewer than six Michelin-equipped Mini ALL4 Racings, their ranks led by Al-Attiyah (4m24s), ahead of team-mates Peterhansel, Roma, Holowczyc, Villagra and Vasilyev. In total, the day’s top 10 featured seven Minis, plus Giniel de Villiers (Toyota) and Bernhard Ten Brinke (Ford-HRX).

The leaderboard is still topped by Roma, but his closest threat is now Peterhansel who moved up a notch when Terranova took a 15-minute penalty for colliding with a biker. The Argentinean also dropped 18 minutes on the stage and has fallen back to fourth, behind South Africa’s Giniel de Villiers.

Monday’s journey will take car competitors across the Andes for the first Chilean stage of the 2014 Dakar 2014. The day begins with a 510km road section which climbs to almost 5,000 metres at the Paso de Jama, while the stage itself (302km) will finish near the mining town of Calama. Sainz will leave Salta at 5:15am, and the stage is due to start at 11:50am.

Après une journée de repos marquée par des pluies diluviennes hier, le bivouac de Salta s’est réveillé dans la boue ce matin pour une deuxième semaine de course qui a démarré sur un train d’enfer.Salta, c’est aussi le point de départ du Train vers les Nuages (Tren de la Nubes) qui emmène ses passagers dans la Cordillère des Andes, jusqu’à la frontière chilienne, à plus de 4200 mètres d’altitude, via 29 ponts, 21 tunnels, 13 viaducs… A la belle saison, l’aller-retour dure 17 heures.

L’aller-retour à Salta de 763 km proposé aux autos aujourd’hui n’aura duré que 4h43min28s pour le vainqueur, Carlos Sainz, qui signe sa 2^e victoire d’étape cette année, sa 27^e au Dakar qui le place en 4^e position au palmarès Autos derrière Vatanen (50), Peterhansel (30) et Ickx (29). « On a bien roulé. La spéciale était très variée avec des portions étroites et sinueuses au début, puis des pistes plus larges. »

Sur les grands espaces de l’altiplano andin, parmi lamas et vigognes, le Buggy SMG a devancé une horde de six Mini ALL4 Racing emmenée par Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Le Qatari a pris la 2^e place du jour à 4min24s de Sainz, et précédé ses équipiers Peterhansel, Roma, Holowczyc, Villagra, Vasilyev. Huit Mini figurent dans le top-ten complété par Giniel de Villiers (Toyota), Terranova et Bernhard Ten Brinke (Ford-HRX).

Nani Roma est toujours leader du classement général devant Stéphane Peterhansel qui a progressé d’une place après une pénalité de 15 minutes infligée à Orlando Terranova ce matin pour avoir percuté un motard. L’Argentin, qui a également perdu 18 minutes aujourd’hui, a chuté à la 4^e place du général derrière le Sud-Africain Giniel de Villiers.

Demain, les concurrents Autos vont traverser la Cordillère des Andes pour la 1^ère étape chilienne de ce Dakar 2014. La spéciale débutera côté chilien après 510 km de liaison et un passage à près de 5000 mètres d’altitude via le Paso de Jama. La spéciale longue de 302 km s’achèvera aux portes de la cité minière de Calama. Carlos Sainz quittera le bivouac de Salta à 5h15 pour un départ en spéciale à 11h50.

Dakar,Leg 4: an assertive run by Sainz / étape 4 : Sainz frappe fort

The fourth leg of the 2014 Dakar from San Juan to Chilecito was won by Carlos Sainz (SMG Buggy) ahead of five Mini ALL4 Racing drivers. Today’s result has taken the Spaniard to the top of the leaderboard, tailed by Nani Roma, Nasser Al-Attiyah, Orlando Terranova and Stéphane Peterhansel who are covered by around 15 minutes.

From this morning’s start in San Juan, Argentina’s Ruta 40 passed through some of the country’s most splendid scenery (Talampaya and San Guillermo national parks, the Valle de la Luna, etc.) en route to the small town of Chilecito which is surrounded by orchards and vineyards hemmed in by the slopes of the Velazco and Famatina sierras.

The stage itself was long and tough, with countless river beds to cross and deep, stony gorges. The organisers described it as the longest stage visited by the Dakar since Zouerat-Tichit in 2005. In reality, though, it was divided into two parts (212km and 284km respectively) separated by a long asphalt road section.

Guerlain Chicherit (Jefferies) led at the first passage control, but the Frenchman was halted by a transmission problem at Km65 before the American prototype caught fire at Km427.

It was a difficult start, too, for Leeroy Poulter (Toyota), who had to stop at Km48 with a problem at the rear of his Hilux pick up, as well as for Peterhansel (Mini) who dropped five minutes when he was forced to change a wheel at Km28. The Frenchman managed to recover some of his deficit, however, and he completed the stage with the second best time (+6m3s) behind Sainz (SMG Buggy).

“We started with a late running order this morning and hanging dust was a problem during the first section. Then our power steering failed, but fortunately it was just 10km from the end,” reported the 2010 Dakar winner who has gone 2m6s seconds clear overall, ahead of compatriot Nani Roma who was fifth today.

Third place went to Al-Attiyah (Mini) who actually led from the second to the eighth passage control, posting the fastest time for the first section. He then dropped 10 or so minutes after he got lost at Km500. The Qatari is also third overall, ahead of Argentina’s Terranova (Mini) who was sixth today. One of today’s top performances was the work of fellow Argentine driver Federico Villagra (Mini) who produced the fourth-best effort, ahead of Roma.

Thursday’s menu will take survivors to the city of San Miguel de Tucuman via a 527km stage split in two by a 70km asphalt liaison section. The main difficulties promise to be the first big dunes of the week, some off-road motoring, sand and, to conclude, stony trails. Sainz will be the first driver to tackle the stage at 8:28am local time.

Parc National de Talampaya, d’Ischigualasto, Valle de la Luna, Parc National de San Guillermo : depuis San Juan, la Ruta 40 traverse peut-être les plus beaux décors de l’Argentine jusqu’à Chilecito, petite ville entourée d’arbres fruitiers et de vignes entre les Sierras de Velazco et Famatina.

Pour les concurrents du Dakar, Chilecito est toujours synonyme d’étape difficile qui amène une étape encore plus compliquée. Mais en attendant les premières grandes dunes et hors-pistes du Dakar 2014 demain, la spéciale du jour traversait d’innombrables rios et de profonds canyons empierrés. Difficile, donc, et longue, très longue…

Annoncée comme la plus longue spéciale depuis Zouerat-Tichit en 2005, elle était en réalité divisée en deux sections de 212 et 284 km, entrecoupées par une longue liaison sur asphalte. Le prototype Jefferies de Guerlain Chicherit était pointé en tête au CP1. Mais au Km 65, le Français a dû s’arrêter (transmission) et au Km 427, le prototype américain s’est embrasé.

Début d’étape difficile aussi pour Leeroy Poulter (Toyota Hilux) arrêté au Km 48 (problème de train arrière), et pour Stéphane Peterhansel (Mini), qui a dû changer une roue au Km 28 et perdu 5 minutes. Mais le Français est revenu sur la tête de course au fil des kilomètres pour pointer à la 3^e place provisoire au CP9. Il a finalement conclu à la 2^e place, à 6min03s de Sainz, grand vainqueur du jour sur son Buggy SMG.

« On est parti loin ce matin et nous avons eu beaucoup de poussière dans la 1^ère section. On a eu beaucoup de chance car la direction assistée a lâché à 10 km de l’arrivée », résumait le vainqueur du Dakar 2010, qui arrache les rênes du rallye à son compatriote Nani Roma (5^eaujourd’hui) pour 2min06s.

Nasser Al-Attiyah (Mini) a signé le 3^e temps du jour alors qu’il avait fait course en tête du CP2 au CP8 et remporté la 1^ère partie de spéciale. Mais il s’est égaré une dizaine de minutes au Km 500. Le Qatari est également 3^e du classement général devant l’Argentin Orlando Terranova (Mini), 6^eaujourd’hui. Mais cette journée a été marquée par la performance d’un autre pilote argentin, Federico Villagra (Mini), régulièrement dans le top-five, qui termine à la 4^e place devant Roma.

Demain, cap sur la métropole de San Miguel de Tucuman via une spéciale de 527 km entrecoupée par une liaison asphalte de 70 km. Au programme : du hors-piste, du sable, des dunes et des pistes caillouteuses pour finir. Départ en spéciale à 8h28 (12h28) pour « El Matador ».
