Sous réserve des résultats officiels publiés par la FIA, Sébastien Ogier et son copilote Julien Ingrassia ont décroché leur second titre mondial consécutif à l’issue du RallyRACC-Rally de Espana.
Marié à l’été, champion en fin d’année ! 2014 est une année faste pour le Français Sébastien Ogier qui a coiffé une seconde couronne mondiale à l’issue du RallyRACC-Rally de Espana. C’est d’ailleurs la première fois qu’il est titré à la fin d’un rallye !
« Sur le moment, à l’arrivée de la dernière spéciale, l’émotion était beaucoup plus forte que l’an passé où j’avais été titré un peu bizarrement en début de rallye. Il avait fallu ensuite trouver la motivation… » reconnaissait Seb au parc d’assistance où l’attendait une nuée de fans beuglant laMarseillaise. « Là, il a fallu se battre tout le week-end avec un Jari-Matti toujours aussi coriace. Je pense qu’on a fait le break le premier jour, mais ensuite, il a fallu contrôler et c’est long, deux jours de course ! »
« On mérite ce deuxième titre sur l’ensemble de la saison. Ok, on a connu un faux-pas en Allemagne et un autre en France qui n’était pas de notre faute. Oui, on avait une certaine pression après le Rallye de France, mais ce week-end a été parfait pour nous. »
Vainqueur de sept rallyes cette saison, Sébastien Ogier rejoint le cercle des doubles champions du monde, Walter Rohrl, Miki Biasion, Carlos Sainz et Marcus Grönholm. Ce week-end, Sébastien Ogier et Julien Ingrassia ont également remporté leur 23e victoire mondiale, et signé leur 34epodium. Ils égalent donc le nombre de podiums réalisés par Richard Burns/Robert Ried et Didier Auriol/Bernard Occelli.
Cette victoire espagnole est aussi la 16e pour Sébastien Ogier avec Volkswagen Motorsport. Le pilote français et le constructeur allemand rejoignent donc au palmarès les célèbres associations Subaru/McRae ou encore Lancia/Biasion. Seuls Citroën/Loeb (78), Mitsubishi/Mäkinen (22) et Grönholm/Peugeot (18) ont fait mieux jusque-là.
Ce week-end, la Fédération Internationale du Sport Automobile a trouvé deux nouveaux champions du monde 2014 : Seb Ogier en WRC et « Pechito » Lopez en WTCC. Ces deux séries avaient déjà couronnés les constructeurs, avec Volkswagen et Citroën.
En WRC, il ne reste plus que le titre WRC-2 à attribuer lors de la finale, au Wales Rally GB, sans oublier le titre de vice-champion du monde Constructeurs que se disputeront Citroën-Total Abu Dhabi (187 pts), M-Sport (180) et Hyundai Motorsport (175).
Subject to the official results published by the FIA, Sébastien Ogier and his co-driver Julien Ingrassia clinched their second consecutive world championship titles today in Spain.
Married in the summer, world champion at the end of the year! 2014 has turned into a memorable year for Frenchman Sébastien Ogier, who sealed his second world championship crown at the end of RallyRACC-Rally de España. What’s more, it marks the first time he has won the title at the end of a rally!
“At that moment, at the end of the final stage, the emotion was much stronger than last year when I became champion in slightly unusual circumstances at the beginning of a rally. After that, I needed to re-motivate myself...” reflected Seb upon his return to the service park, where he was greeted by a throng of fans bellowing out the French national anthem.
“This time, I needed to fight hard all weekend against Jari-Matti [Latvala – team-mate], who never gave me much breathing space. Julien and I made a break on the opening day, but after that, we still needed to control proceedings – and two days of rallying is a long time!
“This second title was achieved over the balance of the whole season. Admittedly, we made a mistake in Germany and ran into another hitch in France that was not our fault. That left us under a certain degree of pressure heading to Spain, but this weekend unfolded perfectly for us.”
Having won seven rallies this season, Sébastien Ogier now joins the club of double world champions which also includes Walter Röhrl, Miki Biasion, Carlos Sainz and Marcus Grönholm.
This weekend, Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia also secured their 23rd WRC victory and 34thpodium finish, thereby equalling the number of rostrums tallied by Richard Burns/Robert Reid and Didier Auriol/Bernard Occelli.
Moreover, Sébastien Ogier’s Spanish success marks his 16th triumph with Volkswagen Motorsport, lifting the French driver and German manufacturer level in the record books with the famous Subaru/McRae and Lancia/Biasion partnerships. Only Citroën/Loeb (78), Mitsubishi/Mäkinen (22) and Grönholm/Peugeot (18) feature higher up.
This weekend, indeed, the FIA has crowned two 2014 world champions: Seb Ogier in the WRC and ‘Pechito’ Lopez in the WTCC. Volkswagen and Citroën had already wrapped up the manufacturers’ laurels in the two series respectively.
In the WRC, the only title left to be decided now in the season finale at Wales Rally GB is that in WRC-2, without forgetting the three-way tussle over the runner-up spoils in the Manufacturers’ standings between Citroën-Total Abu Dhabi (187 pts), M-Sport (180) and Hyundai Motorsport (175).
