Le Japonais Kamui Kobayashi remplace Alex Wurz au sein du team Toyota Gazoo Racing en Championnat du monde d’Endurance FIA. La nouvelle Toyota TS050 Hybrid/Michelin sera dévoilée le 24 mars lors du Prologue au Castellet.
Lors d’une conférence de presse organisée ce matin au Japon, Toyota a annoncé les six pilotes qui représenteront la marque en Championnat du monde d’Endurance FIA 2016.
Le Japonais Kamui Kobayashi (29 ans) remplace Alex Wurz et fera équipe avec Stéphane Sarrazin et Mike Conway sur l’un des deux prototypes engagés sur l’ensemble de la saison.
Il s’agit d’un retour pour Kobayashi chez Toyota. A la fin des années 2000, le Japonais avait intégré le Toyota Junior Team avant de débuter sa carrière en F1 dans le team Panasonic Toyota Racing en 2009 en remplacement de Timo Glock.
Le Japonais avait ensuite piloté pour Sauber jusqu’en 2012, avant de revenir en F1 chez Caterham en 2014. Il a disputé 75 Grands-Prix de F1, signé un meilleur tour en course (Shanghai 2012) et un podium (3e, Suzuka 2012). L’an passé, Kamui a participé au championnat Super Formula (5e).
Sans volant en F1 en 2013, Kobayashi avait effectué quelques piges en Endurance sur une Ferrari 458 AF Corse. Il avait notamment terminé à la 5e place LM GTE Pro aux 24 Heures du Mans avec Beretta et Vilander.
L’an passé, Kamui était aussi pilote de réserve Toyota Gazoo Racing et aurait pu remplacer Nakajima après son accident à Spa en 2015. Il a parcouru de nombreux kilomètres au volant du prototype LM P1 en tests.
Kamui Kobayashi sera associé à Stéphane Sarrazin et Mike Conway. L’autre prototype TS050 Hybrid/Michelin sera confié à Anthony Davidson, Sébastien Buemi et Kazuki Nakajima, équipiers pour la seconde année.
Le nouveau prototype TS050 Hybrid sera dévoilé au circuit Paul-Ricard le 24 mars prochain. Il sera techniquement très différent de la version précédente (châssis, moteur, système hybride, couleurs...).
Japan’s Kamui Kobayashi is to replace retiree Alex Wurz at Toyota Gazoo Racing for this year’s FIA World Endurance Championship. The Toyota TS050 Hybrid/Michelin prototype will be unveiled at the Prologue test at Le Castellet, France, on March 24.
Toyota announced its six drivers for the 2016 FIA WEC at a press conference this morning in Japan.
Kobayashi, 29, has been named to replace Wurz alongside Stéphane Sarrazin and Mike Conway in one of the two new cars that will contest the entire season.
The Japanese driver previously raced for Toyota in the late 2000s when he was part of the Junior Team before stepping up to F1 in 2009 when he replaced Timo Glock at Panasonic Toyota Racing.
He then drove for Sauber until 2012 and was recruited by Caterham for 2014. He totalled 75 grand prix starts, finishing once on the podium (Suzuka, 3rd, 2012) and posting the fastest race lap at Shanghai the same season. Last year, he was fifth in the Super Formula series.
When he was without an F1 drive in 2013, Kobayashi contested several endurance races with AF Corse (Ferrari 458). He was notably fifth in LM GTE Pro at Le Mans with Beretta and Vilander.
In 2015, he was Toyota Gazoo Racing’s reserve driver and was nearly called up following Nakajima’s accident at Spa. He also did some test work in the Japanese prototype.
The other TS050 Hybrid/Michelin will be shared by Anthony Davidson, Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima who will be team-mates for a second year.
The new prototype will feature a new chassis, new engine, new hybrid system, new livery, etc.
