Although the menu of the 2013 Rally Sweden packs very few innovations, this year’s battle promises to be particularly exciting, with favourites Mikko Hirvonen (Citroën), Jari-Matti Latvala (Volkswagen) and Mads Ostberg (Ford) sure to face stiff opposition from Sébastien Loeb and Sébastien Ogier, stars of January’s Rallye Monte-Carlo.
Si le parcours du Rallye de Suède 2013 est des plus classiques, cette 61e édition s’annonce en revanche très ouverte entre trois grands favoris, Mikko Hirvonen (Citroën), Jari-Matti Latvala (Volkswagen) et Mads Ostberg (Ford), et les deux « Seb » - Loeb et Ogier - brillants au dernier Monte-Carlo.
Only 15 percent (53.59km) of the route has changed compared with this time last year and the organisers of the 2013 Rally Sweden have opted for a conventional format, with two days in the Värmland region and one which straddles the Swedish/Norwegian border. The 19.26km ‘Torsby’ test will double up as the ‘Power Stage’.
For the past decade, the event’s service park has been based on the windswept airfield near Hagfors, leaving Karlstad to provide the ‘glamour’ in the form of the start/finish ceremonies and the traditional visits to the nearby hippodrome for the super-specials. Hopefully, the action will take place to a pristine wintry backdrop.
The stages themselves should provide a particularly thrilling contest between two-time winners Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala, as well as Mads Ostberg who has finished twice on the podium here. These drivers are competing for three different teams this year, while Mikko has the most experience of the event which has rarely been kind to Citroën (or Loeb). The chief question marks concern the form of the new Polo R on this type of surface, and the ability of Ostberg to continue Ford’s successful run in Sweden which dates back to 2006?
In addition to these three ‘locals’, other likely front-runners include the 2004 winner Sébastien Loeb who will be contesting the event for the final time. Meanwhile, Sébastien Ogier posted three fastest times here in 2011 and clearly has the necessary talent to achieve a top result.
Much is expected, too, of Evgeny Novikov (fifth in 2012), Juho Hanninen and Jari Ketomaa who are all driving Ford Fiesta RS WRCs. Making his comeback is Henning Solberg, while his son-in-law Pontus Tidemand, 22, will be driving a WRC car for the first time. Also of interest will be the fight between Al-Qassimi and Al-Attiyah, as well as that in the WRC-2 class, despite the withdrawal of the two-time Junior world champion P-G. Andersson (Proton). Another driver who will be missing at the start is the Mexican 2012 PWRC champion Benito Guerra who will now make his debut in his Citroën DS3 WRC on home soil next month.
Avec seulement 15% du parcours (53,59 km) renouvelé par rapport à l’an passé, l’itinéraire du Rallye de Suède 2013 est ultra traditionnel avec deux étapes dans le Värmland et une à cheval entre la Suède et la Norvège. La spéciale de Torsby (19,26 km) servira de Power Stage.
Depuis dix ans, le lugubre aéroport d’Hagfors accueille le parc d’assistance et Karlstad se charge de faire le « buzz » avec les cérémonies de départ/arrivée et la spéciale-spectacle sur l’hippodrome. Voilà pour le décor, que l’on espère évidemment peint d’un blanc immaculé.
Côté sportif, ça devrait être très, très sympa entre Mikko (2 victoires), Jari-Matti (2 victoires) et Mads (2 podiums) partagés cette année dans trois teams différents. Mikko a le plus d’expérience mais ce rallye n’a pas souvent souri à Citroën. Où se situera la nouvelle Polo R sur cette surface ? Mads sera-t-il à la hauteur de son équipe qui n’a plus perdu en Suède depuis 2006 ?
Evidemment, la liste des favoris ne se limite pas à ces trois pilotes nordiques. Vainqueur en 2004, « Seb » Loeb (vainqueur en 2004) a rendez-vous avec lui-même pour défier une dernière fois ces pistes verglacées qui l’ont souvent chagriné. « Seb » Ogier a signé trois meilleurs temps en 2011 et a toutes les capacités pour briller sur cette surface.
On attend beaucoup d’Evgeny Novikov, 5e en 2012, de Juho Hanninen et de Jari Ketomaa, tous sur Ford Fiesta RS WRC. A suivre aussi le retour d’Henning Solberg et les débuts de son beau-fils, Pontus Tidemand, 22 ans, sur une WRC, le duel au sommet entre Al-Qassimi et Al-Attiyah, et la catégorie WRC-2 où, hélas, le double Champion du monde Junior PG Andersson (Proton) est forfait. Autre absence, celle du Champion PWRC 2012, Benito Guerra, qui devrait finalement débuter sur Citroën DS3 WRC chez lui dans un mois.
