The 2013 Rally Mexico’s qualifying stage was won by Mikko Hirvonen (Citroën DS3 WRC) who has chosen to start Friday’s action in 13th position. He will be preceded by Ford Fiesta drivers Novikov, Neuville and Ostberg, and Volkswagen’s Ogier.

This morning’s programme gave the WRC stars a chance to drive on gravel for the first time this year, although the organisers chopped 700 metres off the narrow, rocky six-kilometre ‘Llano Grande’ test.
Sébastien Ogier topped the shakedown timesheet with a time of 4m1.2s at second attempt to beat second-placed Mikko Hirvonen by three seconds.
The result of the Qualifying Stage was influenced by tyre choices, however. The Citroën and Ford drivers opted for the new soft-compound Michelin S2, while VW’s pair stayed with the hard-compound H2 they had run during shakedown. “It probably wasn’t the ideal choice for this stage. We’ll see whether it was a good idea or not to tyre to look after my allocation of hard and soft tyres for the rest of the weekend,” observed Sébastien Ogier (5th) who seemed a little jumpy after qualifying.
The fastest time (3m57.2s) was the work of Mikko Hirvonen in his Citroën DS3 WRC: “I just need to produce the same sort of performance on the long stages…” The Finn finished clear of three Ford Fiesta RS WRC/Michelin drivers, namely Evgeny Novikov (3m57.9s), Thierry Neuville and Mads Ostberg (equal on 4m0.4s). Jari-Matti Latvala (7th) split Citroën’s Sordo (6th) and Atkinson (8th).
At 1pm, the 13 drivers who took part in qualifying gathered on the official podium in Léon to announce their chosen start positions for Friday. There were no surprises, with Hirvonen electing to run 13th on the road, Novikov 12th, etc. The USA’s Ken Block (10th) and Nasser Al-Attiyah (9th) agreed to trade their positions after the Mexican commentator asked them to choose in the wrong order. The first driver on the road tomorrow will be Michal Kosciuszko (Mini WRC), ahead of Martin Prokop and Benito Guerra.
Ce matin, les concurrents du WRC ont enfin pu re-goûter aux joies du pilotage « terre » sur la spéciale de Llano Grande (6 km), réduite de 700 m par les organisateurs, tracée sur des pistes empierrées, très étroites et piégeuses.
En 4min01s2, Sébastien Ogier avait assommé ses adversaires lors du second passage du Shakedown – ou Free practice – en laissant son poursuivant immédiat, Mikko Hirvonen, à 3 secondes.
Mais pour la Qualifying Stage, les choix de pneumatiques ont bouleversé la donne : les pilotes Citroën et Ford ont opté pour le nouveau pneu Michelin S2 (soft), alors que les pilotes VW sont restés en pneus H2 (hard) comme lors du Shakedown. « Ce n’était peut-être par le meilleur choix pour cette spéciale. Bon, on verra par la suite si on a eu raison ou tort dans la gestion des quotas de pneus hard/soft », déclarait Sébastien Ogier, un brin agacé, 5e de la Qualifying Stage.
C’est Mikko Hirvonen qui a remporté cette QS en signant 3min57s2 sur sa Citroën DS3 WRC - « Il faut juste faire la même chose sur les longues spéciales. » - devant les Ford Fiesta RS WRC/Michelin du Russe Evgeny Novikov (3min57s9), de Thierry Neuville et de Mads Ostberg, ex-aequo en 4min00s4. Jari-Matti Latvala n’a réalisé que le 7e temps, entre les Citroën de Sordo (6e) et d’Atkinson (8e).
A 13h00, les 13 pilotes conviés à la Qualifying Stage ont pris place sur le podium dressé au centre du Poliforum pour déclarer leur position sur la route pour la journée de vendredi. Il n’y a pas eu de surprises : les leaders ont logiquement choisi de partir en queue de peloton, Hirvonen 13e, Novikov 12e etc. Puis, le speaker a appelé par erreur l’Américain Ken Block (10e) à la place de Nasser Al-Attiyah (9e). Les deux hommes ont finalement bien voulu échanger leur position ! C’est Michal Kosciuszko qui ouvrira la route sur sa Mini WRC devant Prokop et Benito Guerra.
