Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) a signé la première pole position de la saison 2016 du championnat du monde MotoGP sur le circuit de Losail au Qatar. Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) et Maverick Vinales (Team Suzuki Ecstar) complètent la première ligne.
Le champion du monde en titre, Jorge Lorenzo, a confirmé son statut de favori en s’emparant de la première pole position de la saison en 1.54.543, chrono réalisé dès son deuxième tour.
Marc Marquez est crédité du deuxième temps en 1.54.634. Maverick Vinales a hissé sa Suzuki en première ligne en signant le troisième temps en 1.54.638. C’est la seconde fois depuis son arrivée en catégorie reine en 2015 qu’il accède à cette position.
Auteur du meilleur temps à l’issue des trois premières séances d’essais libres, Andrea Iannone (Ducati) occupe la quatrième place sur la grille (1.54.693). Réalisant son meilleur temps lors de son dernier tour, Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP – 1.54.815) sera encadré par les deux Ducati officielles. Par ailleurs, le nonuple champion du monde a annoncé ce matin qu’il prolongeait son contrat avec Yamaha pour deux saisons supplémentaires, jusqu’en 2018. Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) partira de la sixième place en 1.54.963.
Ces six pilotes sont descendus en dessous de la barre de 1.55.
Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team), septième à une demi-seconde de la pole, Héctor Barberá (Avintia Racing), premier pilote satellite, et Pol Espargaró (Monster Yamaha Tech3) s’élanceront de la troisième ligne.
Auteur du meilleur temps en Q1, Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) s’est classé 10ème devant ses compatriotes Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3), l’autre pilote promu de la Q1, et Scott Redding (Octo Pramac Yakhnich).
La course s’annonce particulièrement ouverte où moins d’un dixième de seconde séparent les pilotes de la première ligne. Les 12 premiers pilotes se tiennent en moins d’une seconde.

Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) pocketed the first pole of the 2016 MotoGP World Championship this evening in Qatar (Losail). He will be joined on Sunday’s front row by Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) and Maverick Vinales (Team Suzuki Ecstar).
Jorge Lorenzo kicked off the defence of his 2015 title in style by claiming the first pole position of the season with a time of 1m54.543 on his second flying lap.
Marquez ended up with the next best effort (1m54.634s) to stay clear of Vinales who ensured a slot on the grid’s front row with a lap of 1m54.638s. It is the Suzuki rider’s second top-three qualifying result since he joined motorcycle racing’s premier series in 2015.
After concluding the three free practice sessions at the top of the timesheet, Andrea Iannone (Ducati) qualified in fourth position (1m54.693s), while Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) waited until his last lap (1m54.815s) to go fifth and split the two factory Ducatis. This morning, the nine-time world champion announced that he has extended his contract with Yamaha until 2018.
Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati, 1m54.963s) was the last of the six riders who succeeded in squeezing beneath the 1m55s threshold.
Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team), who was seventh, half-a-second off Lorenzo’s time, Héctor Barberá (Avintia Racing), the best-placed satellite rider, and Pol Espargaró (Monster Yamaha Tech3) will all start the Qatar GP from the third row.
Q1 victor Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) was 10th, ahead of compatriots Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3), who also survived the Q1 session, and Scott Redding (Octo Pramac Yakhnich).
Sunday’s race promises to be particularly open, with less than one-tenth of a second blanketing the front-row starters. The top 12 were covered by less than a second.
The 2016 Qatar Grand Prix will start tomorrow (Sunday) at 9pm local time (GMT+3).
