If a four-wheel drive machine like a BMW X5 or a Range Rover Sport just won’t get you where you need to go off road and a Hummer’s too subtle for you perhaps the Gurkha F5 will fit the bill. Assuming that you’re not planning on invading a country though, this could be overkill with its 19,000 lb weight, 18 ft length and optional gun turret.
Anyone who saw “Fast Five” will have seen this machine already, but it’s back in the news thanks to New York Knicks player JR Smith who purchased one to celebrate his recent $18 million dollar contract renewal. The machine is made by Toronto based Terradyne Armored Vehicles for the military and police use, and costs $450,000.
Bear in mind the extreme weight of the armoured car when you read that it’s 6.7 litre V-8 turbocharged diesel engine produces 390bhp. The weight is the main reason it will only manage 93 mph, not that the speed will worry the New York Knicks player as we can’t imagine there are many streets in New York City where a car can get beyond a crawling pace. It sits on the Ford F550 chassis and the V-8 is also produced by Ford.
We’d love to know the emission figures and the economy figures because we’re sure that only a multi-millionaire would be able to meet the cost of running something that was designed to be used by the military and the police.
