TEEMU SUNINEN A REMPORTÉ LA VICTOIRE EN POLOGNE APRÈS UNE COURSE RICHE EN REBONDISSEMENTS EN WRC 2. IL MET LA PRESSION SUR LE LEADER DU CHAMPIONNAT, ELFYN EVAN.
Teemu Suninen, vainqueur de la dernière manche du WRC 2 en Italie, était en route pour s’adjuger la deuxième place en Pologne, derrière son compatriote, Esapekka Lappi. Mais, dans des conditions rendues difficiles par de violentes pluie, le Champion d’Europe 2014 a été victime d’une crevaison lui coûtant la victoire.
Suninen a alors profité de ce coup du sort pour passer en tête et s’adjuger une troisième victoire en WRC 2 cette année. Il a terminé avec une avance de 49’’6 et, au classement général, il revient désormais à cinq points d’Elfyn Evans, leader depuis le début de l’année.
« C’est maintenant le moment de sourire, a-t-il commenté. On a attaqué à la limite tout le week-end et, finalement, nous sommes les vainqueurs. C’a été une belle bagarre face à Evans et Lappi, qui ont des voitures officielles et beaucoup d’expérience. »
Suninen ne semblait pas promis à la victoire quand il a glissé à la troisième place après la première spéciale dominicale. Evans a fait le meilleur temps au volant de sa Ford Fiesta R5 pour grimper au premier rang. Mais, pour lui aussi, une crevaison, dans l’avant-dernière spéciale, a mis fin à ses espoirs de victoire.
Evans a terminé 1’43’’1 devant la Fabia R5 de Lappi, quand l’avant-dernière spéciale, accidentée, a été difficile pour de nombreux pilotes.
Kajetan Kajetanowicz, Pierre-Louis Loubet et Karl Kruuda ont crevé. Scott Pedder a dû abandonné, sur casse de suspension, après être parti en tonneau. Jaroslaw Koltun a endommagé sa suspension. Sander Parn et Hubert Ptaszek se sont arrêtés avant que la spéciale ne soit interrompue. Quentin Gilbert, quatrième en début de journée, a renoncé sur casse moteur.

The Finn, winner of the previous round in Italy, was on course to take second behind fellow countryman Esapekka Lappi. But in treacherous conditions Lappi punctured a tyre in the penultimate stage and his near-20sec advantage was wiped out.
Suninen eased his Skoda Fabia R5 through the final test to clinch a third victory of the year by 49.6sec and slash Evans’ advantage to five points.
“Now is the time to smile,” said Suninen. “We have pushed on the limit all weekend and now we are the winners. It was good to fight with Evans and Lappi, who have factory cars and more experience.”
Suninen was an unlikely winner after slipping to third following this morning’s opening stage. Evans topped the times in his Ford Fiesta R5 to climb ahead but slipped back again in the following stage. A rear right puncture in the penultimate test ended the Welshman’s hopes.
Evans finished 1min 43.1sec clear of Lappi’s Fabia R5 while the heavily rutted penultimate stage created havoc for many more competitors.
Kajetan Kajetanowicz, Pierre-Louis Loubet and Karl Kruuda punctured, Scott Pedder retired with broken suspension after rolling earlier in the morning, Jaroslaw Koltun damaged his suspension and Sander Parn and Hubert Ptaszek both stopped before the test was halted.
Following the carnage, European champion Kajetanowicz finished fourth in a Fiesta RS with Koltun and Loubet completing the top six. Early leader Pontus Tidemand recovered to seventh after broken suspension sidelined him on Friday.
