Marc Marquez bounced back from a broken leg just six weeks ago to claim the first pole position of 2014 at Losail on Saturday.
The Spanish youngster improved the setting of his Repsol Honda machine over the weekend as he returned to the front of the MotoGP™ grid at the Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar.
The 2013 World Champion found a big improvement in Free Practice 4 that allowed him to overcome the testing advantage of the Satellite and Open bikes. Fortunately his leg injury did not prove a major hindrance in the practice sessions.
Marquez posted his pole time of 1’54.507 on his seventh and last lap of the session, bumping down Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) to second and Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) to third. His time was 0.200s faster than Jorge Lorenzo’s pole position time from 2013.
“I’m very happy, after the injury and the loss of half the preseason it’s very important to be here on the front row. But the pole position makes me happy. The satellite riders did a test here and I don’t think they’ve changed their bikes much since FP1, but step-by-step we’ve improved. There’s still some space to the perfect set up,” he commented
Looking ahead, “Tomorrow is the most important; it will be very hard as there are many riders on the same pace. Physical condition will also be difficult for me, as I don’t have full power in my leg so I have to use more arms and this is quite hard over long distance. I think it will be a great race for the fans.”

Alors qu’il récupère encore de sa fracture du péroné qu’il s’était faite à l’entraînement au mois de février, Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda) a retrouvé sa place au sommet de la hiérarchie samedi soir lors des qualifications pour le Grand Prix Commercial Bank du Qatar et a décroché la première pole position de l’année.
Le plus jeune Champion du Monde de l’histoire de la catégorie reine a tourné en 1’54.507 sur le dernier de ses sept tours pour s’installer en tête de la grille devant son compatriote Álvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini), battu de 0.057s, et Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3).
« C’est une très bonne surprise. Je ne m’y attendais pas hier parce qu’il y avait beaucoup de pilotes, en particulier les Open, qui étaient très rapides avec le pneu tendre. Je suis très content. C’est très important d’être en première ligne après ma blessure et après avoir manqué la moitié de la pré-saison, » a affirmé Márquez. « Les pilotes satellites avaient fait un test ici et je ne pense pas qu’ils aient vraiment modifié leurs motos depuis la FP1 mais de notre côté nous avons progressé, étape par étape. Il nous reste cependant encore de la marge pour trouver le set-up parfait. »
« Demain sera important. Ce sera dur parce qu’il y a beaucoup de pilotes qui ont le même rythme. Ce sera aussi difficile pour moi au niveau physique parce que ma jambe n’est pas aussi forte que d’habitude. Je dois donc compenser avec les bras et c’est fatiguant sur distance de course. Je pense que ce sera une belle course pour les fans. »
