Winner of the Oilibya Rally of Morocco, Portuguese Paolo Goncalves (Honda Michelin) beats Marc Coma (KTM Michelin) and clinched the Rally Raid World title, two months prior the Dakar. The race was an intense battle between Honda and KTM!
Vainqueur du rallye Oilibya du Maroc devant Marc Coma (KTM Michelin), le Portugais Paolo Goncalves (Honda-Michelin) a coiffé le titre de champion du monde de rally-raid et est sorti vainqueur de l’affrontement au sommet entre Honda et KTM, à deux mois du Dakar.
Both KTM and Honda line up in Morocco their full team, and introduced their new 450 in this race, last round of the 2013 Championship. The race was promising and this Rally was really intense, as the race was decided during the last of the six stages. Winners of five stages, the Honda riders confirmed the potential of their new bike and the ambitions of the Japanese manufacturer, who came back to Rally Raid just one year ago.
Goncalves and Spaniard Juan Barreda (Honda Michelin) claimed five wins; winner of three stages and leading the race before the last day, Barreda lost his chances when he crashed in the last stage and offered the win to his teammate Goncalves, who finally beats Coma.
Only twenty seconds behind Gonçalves before the last stage, Marc had almost trimmed his time deficit when he got lost in the last part of the stage. Goncalves finally beats him by 3’44 after 1500km of racing and offered to Honda the World title.
A strong performance for Honda with three bikes in the top five, while KTM scored a second and a fourth position; Cyril Despres (Yamaha Michelin) was not racing in Morocco, and Olivier Pain was the best Yamaha representative in eighth position.
Avec les formations KTM et Honda au grand complet, chacun des constructeurs lançant dans la course leurs nouvelles 450, ce rallye du Maroc s’annonçait prometteur et il le fut, la victoire ne se décidant que lors de la sixième et dernière étape.
En remportant cinq des six spéciales, les pilotes Honda ont confirmé les ambitions du constructeur Japonais revenu en rallye raid il y a tout juste un an, Goncalves et Juan Barreda (Michelin) se partageant les succès.
Vainqueur de trois étapes et leader du classement général à la veille de l’ultime journée de course, Barreda va tout perdre en chutant lors de la dernière spéciale, rétrogradant à la troisième place du classement général. Une aubaine pour son équipier Goncalves, qui récupère le leadership de la course et s’impose devant Marc Coma, qu’il précédait d’une petite vingtaine de secondes avant cette dernière épreuve ; revenu à égalité avec Goncalves au terme de la première partie de cette ultime spéciale.
Coma va ensuite se perdre et concéder de précieuses minutes à son rival qui s’impose avec 3’44 d’avance après 1500km de spéciales et coiffe dans la foulée son premier titre mondial.
En plaçant trois motos dans le top cinq Honda réalise une superbe performance alors que les pilotes KTM s’intercalent aux secondes et quatrièmes places ; Cyril Despres (Yamaha Michelin) absent, Olivier Pain place la première Yamaha à la huitième place.
