This year sees Rally Australia celebrate its 20th edition as a qualifying round of the FIA World Rally Championship. Since the first of those in 1989, the event has moved from the continent’s west coast to the east, from Perth to Coffs Harbour. Round 10 of the 2013 WRC has attracted an entry of 29 cars.
Le Rallye d’Australie fête cette année sa 20e édition en Championnat du monde des Rallyes FIA. Depuis 1989, le rallye a traversé le pays-continent d’Ouest en Est, de Perth à Coffs Harbour. Vingt-neuf concurrents sont attendus au départ de cette 10e manche 2013.
The distance between Perth and Coffs Harbour is around 3,640km as the emu flies (or would like to fly!), which is the same distance as Faro in Portugal to Jyväskylä in Finland! The Australian round has consequently changed significantly compared with two decades ago.
In the early 1990s, Rally Australia brought a new approach to the world championship. Garry Connelly, the man behind it, turned it into a big show in the heart of Perth, and the night-time super-special in Langley Park soon established itself as a highlight of the season. The rally was backed by Western Australia until 2006.
After a year off the calendar, this year’s Coates Hire Rally Australia is based for the second time in Coffs Harbour, on the east coast between Sydney and Brisbane. The flowing, technically challenging stages in the nearby hills are very different to infamous marble-strewn tracks which made the event’s early editions so demanding…
Citroën does not have good memories of the 2011 rally when its two Sébastiens both crashed. This time round, Citroën-Total Abu Dhabi will be represented by last year’s winner Mikko Hirvonen and Briton Kris Meeke as it endeavours to close the gap to Volkswagen in the Manufacturers’ standings.
Sébastien Ogier will sew up the Drivers’ championship in Australia if Thierry Neuville (Ford) fails to produce another top performance, and VW’s Frenchman will have the help of team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala as he attempts to clinch the crown. A third VW Polo R WRC has been entered for Andreas Mikkelsen and co-driver Paul Nagle.
Qatar M-Sport WRT is still chasing after its first win of 2013. With Thierry Neuville no doubt focused on his remaining championship chances, Mads Ostberg and Evgeny Novikov will both have their mind set on victory.
Nasser Al-Attiyah will not take part, but Australia’s Nathan Quinn is poised to make his first appearance in a World Rally Car (Mini John Cooper Works), with the experienced Glenn MacNeal sitting alongside.
Nine WRC-2 drivers have entered the event. In Kubica’s absence, Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari (Ford Fiesta RRC) will try to retrieve the championship lead, while Hayden Paddon (Skoda S2000), Yazeed Al-Rahji (Fiesta RRC), Yurii Protsavov (Fiesta R5) and Subhan Aksa (Fiesta R5) have also decided to contest this season’s final ‘long-haul’ round.

Citroën ne garde pas un bon souvenir de l’édition 2011 avec une double sortie de route des « Sébastien ». Cette année, l’équipe Citroën-Total Abu Dhabi engage le vainqueur sortant, Mikko Hirvonen, et le Britannique Kris Meeke, dans l’espoir de recoller à Volkswagen au championnat Constructeurs.
Sébastien Ogier (VW) pourrait être titré en Australie si Thierry Neuville (Ford) ne réalise pas une nouvelle grande performance. Le Français pourra compter sur son équipier, Jari-Matti Latvala, vainqueur « moral » en 2011, pour l’aider à conquérir le titre. La troisième VW Polo R WRC sera confiée à Andreas Mikkelsen associé à Paul Nagle.
Chez Qatar M-Sport WRT, on rêve toujours d’une victoire cette saison. Thierry Neuville sera sans doute focalisé sur le championnat, mais Mads Ostberg et Evgeny Novikov n’ont plus qu’un objectif : gagner. Nasser Al-Attiyah ne sera pas au départ. L’Australien Nathan Quinn débutera au volant d’une World Rally Car sur une Mini John Cooper Works en compagnie de l’expérimenté Glenn MacNeal.
En WRC-2, neuf concurrents ont fait le déplacement. En l’absence de Kubica, Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari (Ford Fiesta RRC) va tenter de reprendre les rênes du championnat. Hayden Paddon (Skoda S2000), Yazeed Al-Rahji (Fiesta RRC), Yurii Protsavov (Fiesta R5) et Subhan Aksa (Fiesta R5) se disputeront cette troisième et dernière manche outre-mer de la saison.
