My programme these past few weeks has been incredibly eclectic! Last weekend, our debut in the FIA GT championship went reasonably well, even though we lost out on valuable points.
Difficile de faire plus éclectique que mon programme de ces prochaines semaines ! Le week-end dernier, notre première course en FIA GT s’est plutôt bien passée, même si on a abandonné de précieux points au championnat.
I followed last month’s Rally Mexico’s from home, in the middle of wintry weather. Now, it’s my turn to enjoy a little sunshine because this column was written in the Maldives, in the Indian Ocean…
The first round of the FIA GT at Nogaro, France, was quite positive as far as the performance of our team and McLaren were concerned. In points terms, though, the result was only average because of a couple of penalties. On a personal level, I felt comfortable with the circuit. I started Sunday’s race from pole position and succeeded in defending first place during my stint. We lost the lead because of a penalty incurred during the pit stop. My team-mate Alvaro Parente tried to recover the lead but we then took another penalty. I think I can improve my qualifying performance; we’ll see about that at the next round, at Zolder, Belgium, in three weeks’ time…
I have also been back behind the wheel of the Citroën DS3 WRC for pre-Rally Argentina testing. I hadn’t driven on the loose since a test in Wales at the end of last year. It took me a little time to find my marks again, but I felt better towards the end of the day. Argentina is on my programme at the end of April. It’s a rally I enjoy and Citroën asked me to do it because of its importance to the brand. My aim will be to score some Manufacturers’ points but, to be perfectly honest, my focus is more on my circuit racing programme this season, and notably our participation in the FIA GT championship because, as you know, we decided not to do the European Le Mans Series or the Le Mans 24 Hours.
We wanted to do those two competitions well. However, following the withdrawal of a partner, we didn’t have the necessary budget. It’s not a huge issue for me and it’s a project we can always carry over to 2014…
Another interesting project is the Pikes Peak Hill Climb with the Peugeot 208 T16, Red-Bull and Michelin. Once Peugeot obtained Citroën’s authorisation, everything happened very quickly. I don’t know much about the car, except that it weighs 850kg for a power output of 850hp thanks to a turbocharged engine derived from circuit racing… That’s all I can say for the moment. Like everyone, I’ve seen the film of Vatanen at Pikes Peak in the 1980s, but that’s all I know. It will be something new for me to discover…
I hear Pikes Peak can be quite a complex challenge the first time because so many of the corners that make up the 22km course look similar. I have asked Romain Dumas to see his on-board videos from last year in order to learn the course ahead of our first test session with the 208 T16…

Le mois dernier, j’ai suivi le Rallye du Mexique depuis chez moi, dans l’hiver et le froid. Et bien là, c’est à mon tour d’être au soleil. C’est depuis les Maldives, au milieu de l’océan Indien, que je vous envoie cette chronique…
Le bilan de la première manche FIA GT à Nogaro est positif au niveau de la performance du team, de la McLaren et de l’équipage. Sur un plan comptable, il est en revanche assez moyen car plusieurs pénalités nous ont privés de précieux points au championnat. Pour ma part, je me suis senti à l’aise sur ce circuit. Dimanche, parti en pole, j’ai réussi à rester en tête pendant tout mon relais. En fait, on a perdu la 1ère place dans les stands à cause d’une pénalité. Mon équipier Alvaro Parente a ensuite tenté de reprendre le leadership, mais nous avons encore été pénalisés. Je sens que j’ai encore des progrès à faire sur un tour de qualif par exemple. On remet ça dans trois semaines à Zolder…
J’ai aussi repris le volant de la Citroën DS3 WRC à l’occasion d’une séance d’essais pour le Rallye d’Argentine. Je n’avais plus roulé sur la terre depuis des tests au Pays de Galles en fin de saison dernière. Dur de retrouver les sensations au début, c’était mieux en fin de journée. Je serai bien au départ du Rallye d’Argentine fin avril-début main. C’est un beau rallye et Citroën m’avait demandé d’y participer parce que c’est important pour la marque. Mon objectif sera donc de rapporter quelques points Constructeurs, mais pour être tout à fait honnête, je suis davantage focalisé sur mon programme circuit cette saison, et plus précisément sur le FIA GT car comme vous le savez, on a dû déclarer forfait pour l’ELMS et les 24 Heures du Mans.
On voulait faire les choses bien, mais suite à la défection d’un partenaire, nous n’avons pas pu réunir le budget nécessaire. Personnellement, je n’en fais pas une obsession et on peut reporter ce projet à 2014…
Un autre projet sympa, c’est celui de Pikes Peak avec la Peugeot 208 T16, Red-Bull et Michelin. Tout s’est décidé très vite à partir du moment où Peugeot a eu l’accord de Citroën. Je ne sais pas grand-chose de la voiture, sauf qu’on annonce 850 chevaux pour 850 kg, un moteur turbo dérivé du circuit… Voilà pour l’heure. Comme tout le monde, j’avais vu les images de Vatanen à Pikes Peak dans les années 80. Mais je n’en connais pas davantage. C’est l’occasion de découvrir…
D’après mes infos, Pikes Peak a l’air assez compliqué la première fois avec 22 kilomètres et beaucoup de virages qui se ressemblent. Là aussi, je veux faire les choses bien. J’ai déjà demandé à Romain Dumas ses caméras embarquées pour visionner et apprendre le parcours avant les premiers essais avec la 208 T16…
