WRC, Argentine : Latvala chassé par Ogier et Paddon / Latvala, Ogier and Paddon set the pace

Jari-Matti Latvala (VW/Michelin) est en tête du Rallye d’Argentine 2016 après la première étape. Le Finlandais dispose de 7.9 secondes d’avance sur son équipier Sébastien Ogier (VW/Michelin) et 11.4 secondes sur Hayden Paddon (Hyundai/Michelin). Skoda/Michelin domine la catégorie WRC-2 avec Al-Kuwari, Arias et Fuchs.

Comme souvent, les spéciales rapides et sablonneuses de Calamuchita, au sud de Cordoba, ne créent guère d’écarts entre les leaders. Les deux passages de Soconcho-Villa del Dique (ES2/5) et d’Amboy-Santa Monica (ES3/6) ont été remportés avec moins d’1s5 d’avance. Dans l’ES6 (24,71 km), trois pilotes - Latvala, Paddon, Ogier - ont terminé en 0s6, c’est-à-dire trois voitures en moins de 20 mètres !

C’est finalement dans Santa Rosa-San Agustin (ES4/8) que Jari-Matti Latvala a pris l’ascendant sur ses deux adversaires du jour : son équipier Sébastien Ogier, toujours en quête d’un premier succès argentin, et Hayden Paddon (Hyundai/Michelin) qui se rapproche de plus en plus d’un premier succès mondial. En deux passages, le Finlandais a infligé 10s1 au Néo-Zélandais et 12s9 au Français.

Au terme de la première étape, Jari-Matti Latvala est leader avec 7s9 d’avance sur Ogier qui a repris la 2^e place face à Paddon dans la dernière Superspéciale du jour. Le Néo-Zélandais est troisième à 11s4.

Le top-five, uniquement composé de VW Polo R WRC/Michelin et de Hyundai NG i20 WRC/Michelin, est complété par Andreas Mikkelsen et Dani Sordo. Thierry Neuville (Hyundai/Michelin) a connu des ennuis de coupures moteur en début de rallye.

Les Ford Fiesta RS WRC n’ont jamais pu se mêler aux VW et Hyundai. Mads Ostberg est 6^e à plus de deux minutes du leader. Son compatriote Henning Solberg est à plus de quatre minutes et Eric Camilli a déjà concédé plus de cinq minutes. Ott Tanak et Lorenzo Bertelli ont abandonné sur des problèmes mécaniques.

Pour sa première expérience en DS3 WRC/Michelin, le champion argentin en titre Marcos Ligato est 9^e après avoir laissé beaucoup de temps dans une touchette.

La catégorie WRC-2 est dominée par Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari, déjà double vainqueur en Argentine. Au volant de sa Skoda Fabia R5 équipée des nouveaux pneus Michelin LTX Force S81 (soft), le Qatari devant le Paraguayen Didier Arias (Skoda/Michelin, +53s3) et le Péruvien Nicolas Fuchs (Skoda/Michelin). Leader du championnat, Elfyn Evans (Fiesta/Michelin) a dû se retirer sur problèmes électriques.

Jari-Matti Latvala (VW/Michelin) leads the 2016 Rally Argentina after Day 1 with a cushion of 7.9 seconds over his VW/Michelin team-mate Sébastien Ogier (VW/Michelin), while Hayden Paddon (Hyundai/Michelin) is only 3.5s further back. Skoda/Michelin dominates in WRC2 with Al-Kuwari, Arias and Fuchs.

As has often been the case in the past, the fast, sandy stages in the Calamuchita region south of Cordoba failed to produce any big gaps at the sharp end of the leaderboard. Friday’s two visits to ‘Soconcho-Villa del Dique’ (SS2/5) and ‘Amboy-Santa Monica’ (SS3/6) were all won by margins of less than 1.5s, with Latvala, Paddon and Ogier covered by just 06s – a difference equivalent to less than 20 metres – on SS6 (24.71km)!

It was on ‘Santa Rosa-San Agustin’ (SS4/8) that Latvala notably managed to pull clear of his biggest threats, namely Ogier, who is still hunting for his first Rally Argentina victory, and Hayden Paddon (Hyundai/Michelin) who appears to be edging closer to his first world class win. The two attempts at ‘Santa Rosa’ saw the Finn go 12.9s and 10.1s clear of his two rivals respectively.

Latvala completed the day’s action 7.9s clear of Ogier who eased past Paddon (+11.4s) into second spot thanks to his time on the evening’s super-special.

The provisional top five, which features only VW Polo R WRCs and Hyundai NG i20 WRCs, is rounded out by Andreas Mikkelsen and Dani Sordo. Thierry Neuville (Hyundai/Michelin) was delayed early on by an engine misfire.

The Ford Fiesta RS WRCs failed to match the pace of the front-runners and Mads Ostberg (6^th) is more than two minutes adrift of Latvala. Fellow Norwegian Henning Solberg is more than four minutes back and Eric Camilli has already dropped more than five minutes. Ott Tanak and Lorenzo Bertelli both retired due to mechanical trouble.

The defending Argentine champion Marcos Ligato, who is driving a DS3 WRC/Michelin for the first time, is ninth after squandering a lot of time in an ‘off’.

WRC2 has been dominated so far by Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari who has already picked up two class wins in Argentina. With his Skoda Fabia R5 running on the new soft-compound Michelin LTX Force S81, the Qatari is chased by Paraguay’s Didier Arias (Skoda/Michelin, +53.3s) and Nicolas Fuchs from Peru (Skoda/Michelin). The championship’s provisional leader Elfyn Evans (Fiesta/Michelin) was eliminated for the day by an electrical problem.

WRC, Argentine : A Paddon le Shakedown / Paddon wins shakedown

Le Néo-Zélandais Hayden Paddon (Huyndai/Michelin) a réalisé le meilleur chrono lors du Shakedown du Rallye d’Argentine 2016. Il a devancé les deux VW Polo R WRC/Michelin de Latvala et d’Ogier. Le rallye démarre ce soir dans les rues de Cordoba.

Le jour se levait à peine sur Villa Carlos Paz quand les premières voitures ont quitté le parc d’assistance en direction du Shakedown ; une nouvelle spéciale d’essais longue de 6,01 km.

Vainqueur en Argentine il y a deux ans, Jari-Matti Latvala (VW/Michelin) a signé le premier temps de référence en 4min08s8 devant l’Espagnol Dani Sordo.

A l’issue du deuxième run, c’est son équipier Hayden Paddon qui a été crédité du meilleur temps en 4min05s7 au volant de sa Hyundai i20 WRC/Michelin « New Generation » chaussée de pneu Michelin LTX Force S4 (soft). Après un changement de suspensions, le Néo-Zélandais a gardé l’avantage au troisième tour, améliorant de près de trois secondes malgré une piste qui commençait à se creuser.

En 4min02s9, Hayden Paddon remporte le Shakedown argentin 2016 devant Jari-Matti Latvala (4min04s2) et Sébastien Ogier (4min04s9). Dani Sordo (Hyundai, 4min05s9) et Andreas Mikkelsen (VW, 4min06s8) complètent le top-five. La première des cinq Ford Fiesta RS WRC pointe à la 7^e place.

En WRC-2, Nicolas Fuchs (Skoda/Michelin) a réalisé le meilleur chrono provisoire, mais Elfyn Evans (Fiesta R5/Michelin) a été retardé par un problème de capteur moteur au premier tour.

Le Rallye d’Argentine démarre ce soir avec une nouvelle Superspéciale (asphalte) tracée dans les rues de Cordoba. On attend évidemment une foule immense dans la deuxième plus grande ville argentine (1,2 million d’habitants) qui n’avait plus accueilli le rallye depuis 2009, même si l’épreuve est basée à Villa Carlos Paz, à quelques kilomètres seulement.

New Zealander Hayden Paddon (Hyundai/Michelin) topped this morning’s shakedown times for the 2016 Rally Argentina. Second- and third-fastest were VW Polo R WRC/Michelin drivers Latvala and Ogier. Competitive action begins this evening with a super-special in the streets of Cordoba.

It was barely daylight when the crews started to pull out of the service park in Villa Carlos Paz en route to Rally Argentina’s new 6.01km shakedown stage.

The first benchmark time (4m8.8s) was the event’s 2014 winner Jari-Matti Latvala (VW/Michelin), ahead of Dani Sordo.

The second runs then saw the latter’s team-mate move ahead with a time of 4m5.7s in his New Generation i20 WRC equipped with soft compound Michelin LTX Force S4 tyres. After a change to his suspension set-up, the New Zealander stayed ahead after his third attempt thanks to an improvement of almost three seconds to 4m2.9s, despite the formation of ruts.

Latvala ended up second-fastest (4m4.2s) with Ogier (4m4.9s) third in the order. Sordo (Hyundai, 4m5.9s) and Andreas Mikkelsen (VW, 4m6.8s) rounded out the top five. The best-placed of the five Ford Fiesta RS WRCs was seventh.

Nicolas Fuchs (Skoda/Michelin) posted the early WRC2 benchmark but the first pass of Elfyn Evans (Fiesta R5/Michelin) was hampered by an engine sensor problem.

Rally Argentina kicks off officially this evening with an asphalt super-special in Cordoba. A big crowd is expected to turn out for the occasion since Argentina’s second-biggest city (population: 1.2 million) hasn’t seen competitive action since 2009, even though the event is based in nearby Villa Carlos Paz.
