When Marc came to the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, he didn’t know what to expect, as he didn’t raced since six months. In fact he was always in the top three riders of this race, with Portuguese Paolo Gonçalves and British Sam Sunderland. After five days of racing the British rider was leading, but he got a ten minutes penalty that relegates him in third position before the final day.
At the start of the last stage, both Coma and Gonçalves could expect the victory as they were within the same minute after fourteen hours of racing; Gonçalves won the stage, but Coma finished only ten seconds behind him and clinched his seventh victory – the fifth consecutive – in this race, thirty-two seconds ahead of his rival. “It’s always nice to win, and the Desert Challenge is really difficult so it’s a good feeling. I’m also happy for the whole team, as in this sport you need a lot of people around you, so this victory was for everyone involved in the team KTM Michelin. I’m very happy to win but feel sorry for Sam because it was clear he was the fastest rider over the five days and deserved his victory, but the rules are the rules and we have to abide by them. For me I was just riding easy for the first three days and just trying to get used to the desert again. I rode harder today, but I knew I had to ride cleanly and not make any mistakes,”said a delighted Coma on the finish line, happy to see his teammates Jakub Przygonski and Taddi Blazusiak finishing the event in fifth and seventh positions.
Marc will now move to Qatar, as the Sealine Cross-Country Rally, second round of the series, will start in ten days; Jakub and Chilean Chaleco Lopez will join him, as Blazusiak will now focus on the Endurocross season.
Bien qu’ayant pris le départ du Abu Dhabi Désert Challenge à court de compétition, Marc Coma s’est rapidement hissé dans le trio de tête de la course avec le Portugais Paolo Gonçalves et le Britannique Sam Sunderland. Au terme du cinquième et avant dernier jour de course ce dernier comptait un peu plus de deux minutes d’avance sur l’Espagnol, mais une pénalité de dix minutes allait reléguer le Britannique en troisième position.
Au départ de l’ultime spéciale Marc Coma et Paulo Gonçalves se retrouvaient donc en lice pour la victoire ; Gonçalves s’imposait, mais Coma ne terminait qu’à dix secondes de lui et empochait son septième succès – le cinquième consécutif – dans cette épreuve, avec trente deux secondes d’avance sur son rival. « C’est toujours agréable de s’imposer, et comme le Désert Chalenge est une épreuve difficile le sentiment est encore plus fort après plusieurs mois d’arrêt. Je suis content pour moi et pour tout le team KTM Michelin, car dans cette discipline tu as besoin de beaucoup de personnes autour de toi et cette victoire revient à toute l’équipe. Je suis content de gagner, mais je suis déçu pour Sam qui était clairement le pilote le plus rapide durant les cinq premiers jours ; il méritait de gagner mais les règles sont les règles et nous devons les respecter. En ce qui me concerne je me suis contenté de rouler calmement les trois premiers jours, de m’accoutumer à nouveau au pilotage dans le désert, avant de hausser le rythme tout en pilotant proprement en essayant de ne pas faire d’erreurs » confiait Coma à l’arrivée, heureux de voir ses équipiers Jakub Przygonski et Taddi Blazusiak prendre les cinquièmes et septièmes places.
Marc sera comme Jakub et le Chilien Chaleco Lopez au Qatar dans dix jours, pour prendre le départ du Sealine Cross-Country Rally, seconde épreuve de la coupe du Monde.
