    1979 BMW R45 CUSTOM

    BMW R45
It’s hard to believe that Louis Nel is only a part-time builder. The bikes that roll out of his South African garage are a testament to his passion and keen eye for detail. Until now, most of his builds have been personal projects—this 1979 BMW R45 is his first commercial build.
The owner had been following Nel’s progress on a R65, and wanted his bike customised in the same vein. Nel was reluctant at first—he’d had carte blanche with the R65, despite it being a friend’s bike. This proposed R45 was to be a near carbon copy, limiting his creativity. But Nel eventually accepted, and when the donor R45 arrived, he gave it a clean bill of health—leaving him free to focus purely on cosmetics.

Nel set about shortening the sub frame and fabricating a new seat, ensuring it was long enough to accommodate a pillion. The seat was then covered in brown leather – by the same gentleman that upholstered Nel’s grandfather’s Jaguar many years ago. The plastic air box was replaced with a more traditional R65 cast unit, and the engine covers with traditional “peanut” covers from Flatracer in the UK.

7 Metal West in the USA supplied the fenders, which are complemented by aluminium number boards. Nel fitted a PIAA headlight up front, with Posh indicators and rear light. The bars are from Renthal, with white Posh barrel grips to match the understated white paint.

Stock BMW mirrors and a Motogadget Mini speedometer keep things legal, while SuperTrapp mufflers provide the soundtrack. Kenda trail tyres further enhance the R45′s undeniably cool scrambler motif.
Could this be the start of a new chapter for Nel? Probably not. As he puts it, “I build for fun, and the enjoyment I get from fabricating and fixing…selling is just a way of financing the next project!”
    Nothing wrong with that.

How to Race at Goodwood… with Tony Dron

Ever wondered what it’s like to drive a fiercely-fought race at the Goodwood Revival? This in-car video, taken 10 years ago in the Ferrari 246S Dino starting from pole position in the Sussex Trophy race at the 2003 Goodwood Revival, brings you as close as non-racers are ever likely to get…
What makes the video exceptional for real historic racing enthusiasts is Tony Dron’s post-race voiceover that talks you through the excitement – and the cool, logical strategy from the driver’s perspective – of the full, 20-minute race. “This is not intended to be entertainment,” he says, claiming it is simply “the race from the driver’s point of view, from start to finish…” But if this isn’t entertaining, Mr Dron, then we don’t know what is. It was a race of incredible tension in which Dron’s Ferrari dropped from pole position to fourth place as the 2.4-litre V6-engined Dino was outgunned at the start by the more powerful, big-engined brutes, only for him to gain place after place as the race progresses. We won’t spoil the story by telling you how it ends.

“It might have been filmed 10 years ago,” adds Dron, “but little has changed in historic racing at Goodwood in that time – except the value of the cars, of course!”
If you want to skip the formation lap and the green flag lap (along with Dron’s explanation of the history of this unique Ferrari), you could jump straight to the race start, around 10 minutes into the video – but we do suggest you take 40 minutes out of your day to watch the entire thing “from start to finish”. It’s worth it.

Australia (Day 2): Ogier takes a step closer to the title / Ogier se rapproche du titre

Sébastien Ogier (VW/Michelin) won all Day 2’s stages in Australia to edge closer to the 2013 Drivers’ crown. He is joined on the provisional podium by Mikko Hirvonen (+45.9s) and Thierry Neuville (+1m11.4s). Kris Meeke has been off the road.
The second leg of the Coates Hire Rally Australia was completely dominated by Sébastien Ogier who, just as he did on Day 1, claimed all Saturday’s ‘real’ stages, including both attempts at ‘Nambucca’ (49.90km) which he covered at an average speed in excess of 105kph.
The Frenchman is now 45.9s clear of Mikko Hirvonen (Citroën/Michelin), while third-placed Thierry Neuville (Ford/Michelin) is more than a minute behind. If the order remains the same after Sunday’s competitive action (125.14km), Ogier and his co-driver Julien Ingrassia will be crowned 2013 WRC champions!
Similarly, if positions stay the same, Volkswagen will be in a strong position for this year’s Manufacturers’ title. Despite losing some 20s after a picking up a puncture on SS12, Jari-Matti Latvala is fourth overall, and Citroën can only count on the points scored by Hirvonen because Kris Meeke rolled out of fourth place on SS13. Volkswagen drivers have monopolised all 16 stage wins so far!
Andreas Mikkelsen (VW/Michelin) recovered fifth place after a mistake by Mads Ostberg (Ford/Michelin) on SS14, while Evgeny Novikov (7th) suffered a puncture early on Day 2.
Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari (Ford RRC/Michelin) tops the WRC-2 standings and could emerge as the championship leader after Rally Australia, since his rival Robert Kubica is contesting Rally Poland this weekend (he won Friday evening’s Qualifying Stage). Yurii Protasov and Yazeed Al-Rahji are first and second. Hayden Paddon (Skoda/Michelin) re-joined under the Rally2 ruling and won all of Saturday’s stages.
