Marc Coma (KTM-Michelin) won the Dakar’s fifth stage between Chilecito and Tucuman which was shortened by almost half its initially-planned distance. The event’s three-time winner has moved into first place and enjoys an enviable cushion over his closest chasers.

Searing heat added to the challenge of today’s competitive section which threw a combination of soft sand, dry river beds and difficult navigation at the surviving bikers. In the end, however, the organisers decided to interrupt the stage after the first 211km section, for safety reasons.
Although shortened, the day turned out to be something of a nightmare for many competitors, including several favourites. Coma was the only rider to have a trouble-free run and he consequently enjoys a big cushion over his chief rivals.
After being forced to sit out last year’s rally because of a shoulder injury, Coma is currently 41 minutes clear of second-placed Joan Barreda (Honda-Michelin). The Catalonian was fortunate to reach today’s finish, though, since he completed the first section with a holed fuel tank. With the help of team-mate Jordi Viladoms (KTM-Michelin), he was able to carry out makeshift repairs before the organisers decided to cancel the remainder of the stage.
Viladoms and Przygonski (KTM) did well to claim second and third places (+12m54s and +22m45s respectively), but Barreda, Cyril Despres (Yamaha Factory Team-Michelin), Alain Duclos (Sherco-Michelin), Juan Pedrero (Sherco-Michelin) and Chaleco Lopez (KTM-Michelin) all suffered and lost significant chunks of time to Coma.
Barreda dropped more than 44 minutes and has fallen back to second overall (+41m), while Despres’ dreams of victory were dealt another cruel blow. After squandering 42 minutes with an electrical problem on Wednesday, the five-time Dakar winner dropped another 45 minutes today through a combination of mechanical problems and navigational errors. He is currently eighth overall (+1h23m1s).
Alain Duclos, Juan Pedredo and Chaleco Lopez also lost time after straying from the ideal route in the suffocating heat. The latter is still third, but now 53 minutes adrift, while Duclos has slipped back to fifth (+1h2m). Viladoms has climbed to fourth overall, a little less than an hour behind his team-mate.
Paulo Goncalves (Honda-Michelin) figured at the top of today’s order early on but was later eliminated when his bike caught fire.
Friday will take competitors further north to Salta via a 465km leg that features 400km of competitive action ahead of the mid-event rest-day on Saturday. The first rider (Coma) will start tomorrow’s stage at 7am local time. 
Une chaleur étouffante, un parcours particulièrement difficile composé de sable mou, de rios asséchés et une navigation exigeante en hors piste ont eu raison des motards. L’organisation a donc décidé de stopper la spéciale au km 211 et d’annuler la seconde partie afin de garantir leur sécurité.
Cette cinquième spéciale a tourné au cauchemar pour la majorité des concurrents en éliminant les principaux prétendants à la victoire. Seul rescapé, Marc Coma a frappé un grand coup aujourd’hui en s’imposant avec une avance importante sur ses principaux rivaux.
Privé de Dakar en 2013 suite à une blessure à l’épaule, l’Espagnol a pris la tête du classement général avec 41 minutes d’avance sur le premier poursuivant, Joan Barreda (Honda-Michelin). La chance était avec le Catalan aujourd’hui. Réservoir percé à l’issue du premier secteur chronométré, Coma reçoit l’aide précieuse de son porteur d’eau, Jordi Viladoms (KTM-Michelin), pour une réparation de fortune avant que l’organisation annonce l’annulation de la suite de la spéciale.
Viladoms et Przygonski (KTM) s’en sortent bien en terminant respectivement deuxième (+12min54) et troisième (+22min45). Tout le monde ne peut pas en dire autant. Joan Barreda, Cyril Despres (Yamaha Factory Team –Michelin), Alain Duclos (Sherco-Michelin), Juan Pedrero (Sherco-Michelin), Chaleco Lopez (KTM-Michelin) ont particulièrement souffert et ont laissé échapper de très grosses minutes au général.
Leader depuis le départ, Barreda a concédé plus de 44 minutes au vainqueur du jour et rétrograde en deuxième position au général à 41 minutes. Les rêves de victoire de Cyril Despres s’éloignent un peu plus. Après avoir laissé filer 42 minutes suite à une panne électrique hier, le quintuple vainqueur abandonne 45 minutes enchaînant des problèmes mécaniques et de navigation. Le Français plonge à la huitième place au général à 1h23min01s.
Alain Duclos, Juan Pedredo et Chaleco Lopez ont subi le même sort en se trompant de direction à plusieurs reprises dans le hors-piste surchauffé. Chaleco Lopez sauve sa troisième place au général mais accuse un retard de 53 minutes. Duclos glisse à la cinquième place (+1h02). Viladoms se hisse au quatrième rang à un peu moins d’une heure de son coéquipier.
Premier leader ce matin, Paulo Goncalves (Honda-Michelin) a été malheureusement contraint à l’abandon suite à l’incendie de sa moto.
Demain les motards mettront le cap au Nord pour une nouvelle étape de montagne longue de 465 km dont 400 km chronométrés avant une journée de repos bien méritée à Salta. Premier départ en spéciale à 7h00 (heure locale –GMT-3) avec Marc Coma.
