Dakar, Leg 7: Sainz claims another stage win / étape 7 : Seconde victoire de Sainz

Carlos Sainz (Buggy SMG) collected his second stage win since the start of the 2014 Dakar to beat a pack of chasing Mini ALL4 Racings led by Al-Attiyah, Roma and Peterhansel. The latter has moved up to second overall after a time penalty was handed to Orlando Terranova.

After Saturday’s rainy rest day in Salta, the bivouac’s dwellers woke up to muddy conditions to get the competition’s second week off to an interesting start. Salta is also the beginning of the line of the famous Train to the Clouds (Tren de la Nubes) which takes passengers through the Andes to the Chilean border at an altitude of more than 4,200 metres. The line features 29 bridges, 21 tunnels and 13 viaducts, and the two-way journey takes 17 hours.

Today’s 763km loop though the Salta region lasted only 4h43m28s for the stage’s winner Sainz whose second win of the event takes his score on the Dakar to a total of 27, placing him fourth in the record books, behind Vatanen (50), Peterhansel (30) and Ickx (29). “We went well,” he reported. The stage was very varied: narrow and twisty in places at the beginning, but then wider towards the end.”

High in the natural habitat of lamas and vicunas, the SMG Buggy driver succeeded in outpacing a train of no fewer than six Michelin-equipped Mini ALL4 Racings, their ranks led by Al-Attiyah (4m24s), ahead of team-mates Peterhansel, Roma, Holowczyc, Villagra and Vasilyev. In total, the day’s top 10 featured seven Minis, plus Giniel de Villiers (Toyota) and Bernhard Ten Brinke (Ford-HRX).

The leaderboard is still topped by Roma, but his closest threat is now Peterhansel who moved up a notch when Terranova took a 15-minute penalty for colliding with a biker. The Argentinean also dropped 18 minutes on the stage and has fallen back to fourth, behind South Africa’s Giniel de Villiers.

Monday’s journey will take car competitors across the Andes for the first Chilean stage of the 2014 Dakar 2014. The day begins with a 510km road section which climbs to almost 5,000 metres at the Paso de Jama, while the stage itself (302km) will finish near the mining town of Calama. Sainz will leave Salta at 5:15am, and the stage is due to start at 11:50am.

Après une journée de repos marquée par des pluies diluviennes hier, le bivouac de Salta s’est réveillé dans la boue ce matin pour une deuxième semaine de course qui a démarré sur un train d’enfer.Salta, c’est aussi le point de départ du Train vers les Nuages (Tren de la Nubes) qui emmène ses passagers dans la Cordillère des Andes, jusqu’à la frontière chilienne, à plus de 4200 mètres d’altitude, via 29 ponts, 21 tunnels, 13 viaducs… A la belle saison, l’aller-retour dure 17 heures.

L’aller-retour à Salta de 763 km proposé aux autos aujourd’hui n’aura duré que 4h43min28s pour le vainqueur, Carlos Sainz, qui signe sa 2^e victoire d’étape cette année, sa 27^e au Dakar qui le place en 4^e position au palmarès Autos derrière Vatanen (50), Peterhansel (30) et Ickx (29). « On a bien roulé. La spéciale était très variée avec des portions étroites et sinueuses au début, puis des pistes plus larges. »

Sur les grands espaces de l’altiplano andin, parmi lamas et vigognes, le Buggy SMG a devancé une horde de six Mini ALL4 Racing emmenée par Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Le Qatari a pris la 2^e place du jour à 4min24s de Sainz, et précédé ses équipiers Peterhansel, Roma, Holowczyc, Villagra, Vasilyev. Huit Mini figurent dans le top-ten complété par Giniel de Villiers (Toyota), Terranova et Bernhard Ten Brinke (Ford-HRX).

Nani Roma est toujours leader du classement général devant Stéphane Peterhansel qui a progressé d’une place après une pénalité de 15 minutes infligée à Orlando Terranova ce matin pour avoir percuté un motard. L’Argentin, qui a également perdu 18 minutes aujourd’hui, a chuté à la 4^e place du général derrière le Sud-Africain Giniel de Villiers.

Demain, les concurrents Autos vont traverser la Cordillère des Andes pour la 1^ère étape chilienne de ce Dakar 2014. La spéciale débutera côté chilien après 510 km de liaison et un passage à près de 5000 mètres d’altitude via le Paso de Jama. La spéciale longue de 302 km s’achèvera aux portes de la cité minière de Calama. Carlos Sainz quittera le bivouac de Salta à 5h15 pour un départ en spéciale à 11h50.

Dakar, Leg 7: Barreda’s third stage victory! / étape 7 : et de 3 pour Barreda !

Stage 7 of the 2014 Dakar between Salta, Argentina, and Uyuni, Bolivia, was won by Joan Barreda (Honda-Michelin) who has taken his score to three wins since last Sunday’s start. The Spaniard finished clear of the leader Marc Coma (KTM-Michelin) and Cyril Despres (Yamaha Factory Racing-Michelin), while Alain Duclos (Sherco-Michelin) dropped 19 minutes.

Joan Barreda (Honda-Michelin) remporte la septième étape entre Salta (Argentine) et Uyuni (Bolivie) et enlève une troisième victoire depuis le départ du Dakar 2014. L’Espagnol devance le leader Marc Coma (KTM-Michelin) et Cyril Despres (Yamaha Factory Racing – Michelin). Alain Duclos (Sherco-Michelin) concède 19 minutes.

After yesterday’s welcome rest day, the 85 bikers still in the event kicked off the event’s second week by heading north into Bolivia for the first part of the event’s second ‘marathon’ stage. The high attrition rate seen so far (51.2%) is an eloquent reminder of just how tough the first half of the rally turned out to be, but the remaining stages – which visit the towering dunes of the Atacama Desert – are likely to be equally demanding.

The seventh stage between Salta and Uyuni was shortened by around 100km when poor weather at the start prevented safety helicopters from taking off. The test eventually started at the Bolivian border, at the originally-planned Check Point 3.

Running fourth on the road, Barreda was fastest over the twisty trail that cut a path through the magnificent landscapes of the Altiplano region. The Honda-Michelin rider reached the finish with a gap of 4m3s and 5m35s over Coma and Despres respectively. Juan Pedrero (+6m57s, Sherco-Michelin) was fourth to make it four different makes in the day’s top four once again. Poland’s Kuba Przygonski (KTM) was fifth.

The main victim of the stage was Alain Duclos who dropped 19m40s after heading in the wrong direction practically from the start. He has consequently been passed into third place by Jordi Viladoms (KTM-Michelin) who was 10^th today.

Marc Coma is now 38m14s clear of Barreda in the overall standings, but third-placed Viladoms (+1h16m3s) is only 32 seconds clear of Duclos. Despres (+2h26m13s) has climbed to tenth.

The bikers will spend tonight in Uyuni but without being able to work on their bikes. Tomorrow (Monday), they face another 701km, including 462km of competitive action in the vicinity of the world’s biggest salt flat (Salar de Uyuni) before heading for Calama, Chile, all on the same set of tyres…

Après une journée de repos bien méritée, les 85 motards rescapés de l’éprouvante première semaine ont mis le cap au Nord et sur la Bolivie pour la première partie de la seconde étape marathon. Le pourcentage d’abandons (51,2 %) témoigne de l’extrême difficulté de cette première partie de course. La seconde semaine s’annonce tout au aussi dure avec les immenses dunes du désert de l’Acatama.

La septième spéciale entre Salta et Uyuni a été amputée de cent kilomètres en raison des mauvaises conditions météorologiques au départ empêchant les hélicoptères assurant la sécurité des pilotes de décoller. Le départ a été finalement donné à la frontière bolivienne au Check Point 3 (CP) initial.

Parti quatrième, Joan Barreda s’est montré le plus rapide sur les pistes sinueuses dessinées dans un décor de rêve au cœur de la région de l’Altiplano. Le pilote Honda-Michelin rallie l’arrivée avec une avance respective de 4min03s et 5min35 sur Marc Coma et Cyril Despres. Juan Pedrero (Sherco-Michelin) termine quatrième à 6min57. Quatre marques différentes sont représentées une nouvelle fois aux quatre premières places. Le polonais Kuba Przygonski (KTM) complète le Top5.

Le grand perdant du jour est Alain Duclos. Le vainqueur de la sixième étape s’est trompé de direction dès les premiers kilomètres. Il concède 19min40s à Barreda et abandonne sa troisième place au général au profit de Jordi Viladoms (KTM-Michelin), dixième du jour.

Marc Coma dispose de 38min14 d’avance sur Barreda au classement général. Alain Duclos glisse à la quatrième place à seulement 32 secondes de Viladoms. Cyril Despres remonte à la dixième place mais compte 2h26min13s de retard.

Ce soir, les motards font escale à Uyuni au sein d’un bivouac dédié sans assistance. Demain, ils devront parcourir 701 kilomètres dont 462 km de parcours chronométré autour du plus grand lac salé mondial, le Salar d’Uyuni, pour rallier Calama (Chili) avec le même train de pneumatiques.
