Rally-raid : a finish win for Honda in Abu Dhabi / Honda au finish à Abu Dhabi

The opening round of the FIM Rally Raid World Championship was very intense this year, as after five days of racing and nearly seventeen hours of stages Paolo Gonçalves (Honda Michelin) beats Marc Coma (KTM Michelin) by only twenty seconds!

Two months after the Dakar, six riders entered the first round of the series with equal chances of winning in Abu Dhabi, all members of factory teams. Honda Michelin lined up Paolo Gonçalves and Joan Barreda; KTM Michelin entered Marc Coma, Sam Sunderland and Jordi Viladoms, while Helder Rodrigues was racing for Honda. Newcomer in the Austrian team, Sam Sunderland was the first leader of the race, as he beats Coma in the first stage; both reverse their position as Coma won the second stage, and KTM dominates the first days.

Sunderland was again leader after the third stage, but he had to retire after a technical problem during the fourth stage so Coma leads Gonçalves by on minute and twenty seconds before the fifth and last stage. After his disappointing Dakar (his bike burned during a stage) the reigning World Champion entered the last stage with a strong determination and beats Coma by one minute and fifty seconds, enough for the Portuguese to win the rally. The revenge will take place just in a few days, as round two is the Sealine Cross-Country Rally in Qatar from 20 to 25 April.

Paolo Gonçalves: “So this Abu Dhabi rally is finished, and I’m really happy for me, and all the team. We have fought a lot during these five days, but we have shown that we have a strong team, a really competitive bike, some really fast riders, and we managed to pick up a victory. So we should be pleased and confident about our future. Our bike is working really well in these hard conditions here in the Abu Dhabi desert, so we need to be happy. Congratulations to everybody.”

La première manche du championnat du monde FIM des Rallyes Raid s’est jouée au finish, puisqu’à l’issue de cinq jours de course et près de dix sept heures d’épreuves spéciales, Paolo Gonçalves (Honda Michelin) s’impose avec seulement vingt secondes d’avance sur Marc Coma (KTM Michelin).

Six des récents animateurs du Dakar se présentaient au départ de ce rallye avec d’égales chances de succès, engagés officiellement au sein des équipes Honda Michelin (Barreda et Gonçalves), KTM Michelin (Coma, Sunderland et Viladoms) et Honda (Rodrigues).

Nouveau venu chez KTM, Sam Sunderland s’imposait le premier jour à son nouvel équipier Marc Coma, qui lui succédait au commandement le second jour après avoir remporté la seconde spéciale. Le chassé-croisé entre pilotes KTM continuait puisque Sunderland repassait en tête du rallye le troisième jour, avant d’abandonner sur problème mécanique.

Malgré les deux succès d’étape de Joan Barreda les troisième et quatrième jours, c’est Marc Coma qui abordait la dernière journée de course en tête du rallye, avec 1’31’’ d’avance sur Gonçalves. Malheureux au dernier Dakar (sa moto avait brulé pendant une spéciale), le Portugais champion du monde en titre allait tout donner dans l’ultime spéciale du rallye, s’imposant avec 1’51’’ d’avance sur Coma et remportant donc cette première manche du championnat avec 20 secondes d’avance. Revanche imminente, puisque le Sealine Cross-Country Rally se disputera au Qatar du 20 au 25 Avril.

Paolo Gonçalves :« Ca y est, ce rallye Abu Dhabi est terminé et je suis content pour moi et pour le team. Nous nous sommes bien battus durant ces cinq jours, et nous avons montré que nous avons un bon team, une moto très compétitive, quelques bons pilotes avec qui nous avons remporté la victoire. Nous pouvons être confiants pour le futur, notre moto marche vraiment très bien dans des conditions aussi difficiles que celles que nous avons rencontré ici dans ce désert d’Abu Dhabi. Félicitations à toute l’équipe. »

The new Citroën DS3 R5 breaks cover / Débuts de la Citroën DS3 R5

After being presented at last year’s Rally de Portugal, the Citroën DS3 R5 is poised to make its competitive debut this weekend on the Italian Championship’s famous Rallye Sanremo.

Citroën Racing chose last year’s visit to Portugal to provide the first glimpse of the DS3 R5. Practically 12 months later, it is about to make its first competitive appearance on the Rallye Sanremo, round two of the Italian Rally Championship, in the hands of Rudy Michelini.

The new car was officially homologated by the FIA a fortnight after its cousin, the Peugeot 208 T16, which means there are now three R5 cars on the market: the Ford Fiesta R5 (50 of which have been sold), the Peugeot (winner of the ERC’s recent Acropolis Rally) and, now, the latest Citroën.

The car has been put through its paces by the team’s resident test drivers, including ex-French champion Alexandre Bengué, as well as by the reigning WRC-3 champ Sébastien Chardonnet who will contest several rounds of this year’s WRC-2 contest in the DS3 R5, starting with Sardinia.

Citroën Racing’s new R5 challenger (1.6 litres, turbo, four-wheel drive) sees it round off its DS3 range alongside the existing R1, R3, RRC and WRC versions of the car. The newcomer has the same specification as the Peugeot 208 R5, and the two machines will actually clash this weekend in Italy, a situation reminiscent of the days when the Peugeot 206 WRC and Citroën Xsara WRC competed directly.

The driver of the Procar Motorsport-run Citroën in Italy will be Rudy Michelini who faces competition from the championship’s first-round winner Giandomenico Basso (Ford Fiesta R5 LPG/Michelin), Paolo Andreucci (Peugeot 208 T16/Michelin), Bryan Bouffier (Peugeot 207 S2000), Umberto Scandola (Skoda Fabia S2000), Alessandro Perico (Peugeot 207 S2000) and Elvis Chentre (Peugeot 207 S2000).

The 56^th Rallye Sanremo (April 11-12) features a traditional route, with stages like ‘Vignai’, ‘Apricale’, ‘Bignone’ and ‘Ronde’ (38.65km, at night) on Day 1 (start: 3pm, Friday), followed by two visits to ‘Passo del Maro’, ‘Bosco di Rezzo’ and ‘Mendatica’ on Saturday, with the finish at Sanremo’s Piazzale Vesco at around 8pm.

Présentée au Rallye du Portugal 2013, la Citroën DS3 R5 va disputer sa première course ce week-end, le mythique Rallye Sanremo, en Championnat d’Italie.

Citroën Racing avait tiré le voile sur la DS3 R5 au parc d’assistance du Rallye du Portugal 2013. Douze mois plus tard, elle sera au départ du Rallye Sanremo, 2^e manche du Championnat d’Italie, aux mains de Rudy Michelini.

Quinze jours après sa cousine Peugeot 208 T16, la Citroën DS3 R5 a été homologuée à son tour par la FIA. Le marché des R5 se compose désormais de trois modèles : la Ford Fiesta R5, vendue à plus de 50 exemplaires, la Peugeot 208 T16 qui vient de remporter le Rallye de l’Acropole (ERC) et donc la Citroën DS3 R5.

Depuis plus d’un an, les pilotes essayeurs de la marque, comme Alexandre Bengué, ont développé cette nouvelle auto. Le Champion du monde WRC-3 en titre, Sébastien Chardonnet, a lui aussi contribué au développement de la DS3 R5. Il disputera d’ailleurs plusieurs manches du championnat WRC-2 2014 à son volant à partir du Rallye d’Italie-Sardaigne.

Avec la R5 (1,6-Litre turbo, 4-roues motrices…), Citroën Racing complète la gamme DS3 déjà riche de la R1, R3, RRC et WRC. La Citroën DS3 R5 reprend les mêmes caractéristiques techniques que la Peugeot 208 R5 à laquelle elle sera d’ailleurs opposée ce week-end sur les routes du Sanremo. Un peu comme il y a une dizaine d’années entre la Peugeot 206 WRC et la Citroën Xsara WRC…

C’est le pilote italien Rudy Michelini qui fera débuter cette nouvelle voiture assistée par l’écurie Procar Motorsport. Il sera confronté à Giandomenico Basso, vainqueur de la 1^ère manche sur sa Ford Feista R5/Michelin GPL. Paolo Andreucci sera au volant de la Peugeot 208 T16/Michelin. Parmi les prétendants à la victoire, on compte aussi Bryan Bouffier (Peugeot 207 S2000), Umberto Scandola (Skoda Fabia S2000), Alessandro Perico ou Elvis Chentre (Peugeot 207 S2000).

La 56^e édition du Rallye Sanremo se déroulera les 11 et 12 avril. Le parcours est relativement classique avec de célèbres spéciales comme Vignai, Apricale, Bignone ou Ronde (38,65 km de nuit) à disputer le 1^er jour (vendredi, départ à 15h00). Le lendemain, trois spéciales (Passo del Maro, Bosco di Rezzo et Mendatica) sont à parcourir deux fois avant l’arrivée à Sanremo, Piazzale Vesco, samedi vers 20h00.
