YART and GMT 94 prepare for Suzuka / Le YART et le GMT 94 préparent les 8 Heures de Suzuka

Yamaha Austria Racing Team (YART) and GMT 94 have completed test sessions at Jerez and Albacete in Spain as they prepare for round two of the 2013 Endurance World Championship, the 8 Hours of Suzuka, at the end of July.

« “They were important tests for us,” reported the Austrian team’s boss Mandy Kainz. “We hadn’t done any running since the Bol d’Or and Suzuka calls for a highly specific set up.”
Igor Jerman, Broc Parkes and Josh Waters took turns on the N°7 Yamaha-Michelin, and their work focused on the bike’s suspension settings. “We used the bike that raced at Magny-Cours. The engine has covered more than 6,000km without a problem.”
Josh Waters, who was deprived of a Bol d’Or appearance following a fall the week preceding the EWC opener, only attended the Jerez test. Despite a harmless fall on the last day, the Australian made good progress and is expected to be fit for Suzuka. Meanwhile, Broc Parkes, who had no prior knowledge of either Jerez or Albacete, impressed with some strong times.
In 2012, YART qualified on pole position and established a new endurance racing lap record at Suzuka. It is consequently targeting a podium result this time round. “A top-three finish is possible, but we will need to be smart enough not to make the same mistakes we have made there in recent years.”

GMT 94 was third in 2012 and hopes to harvest podium success again next month. David Checa, Matthieu Lagrive, Kenny Foray and Maxime Berger essentially used their tests to evaluate a variety of tyre solutions. They also worked on their bike’s electronics and fuel consumption. “We have made good gains in fuel efficiency which was our weakness at the Bol d’Or,” said GMT 94’s team manager Christophe Guyot.
All the teams entered for this year’s 8 Hours of Suzuka – including Michelin’s partners YART, GMT 94 and BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent – are due to attend an official practice session on July 2-3.

The best getaway cars of all time

The getaway car is one of the most important tools in an outlaw’s arsenal. Certain cars have become associated with evading capture while maintaining the driver’s criminal credibility; we take a look at some currently available in the Marketplace.

Jaguar S-Type: Alternative to the archetype

Famously used in the 1960s by British gangsters (both real and fictional), the Mk 2 Jaguar is the archetypal getaway car. But perhaps the S-Type would have been more suitable, given its larger boot (all the more room for loot) and independent rear suspension, allowing for a more controlled and comfortable escape.

Cadillac Series 62 Fastback Coupé: One for the Don

Looking particularly menacing in black, the Type 62 was popular with the American Mafia in the 50s. In fastback coupé form, it’s perhaps suitable as the personal transport of the Boss, while the Mafia's 'soldiers' are likely to have found the saloon more convenient for drive-by duties.

    Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am: Cannonball cruiser

The 1976 film Cannonball saw protagonist Coy Buckman enter an illegal road race in a second-generation Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am, using its thunderous power before totalling it after falling asleep at the wheel. It might not be the most discreet of vehicles; but with all that muscle from the huge-capacity V8, who cares?

    Citroën Traction Avant: Notorious namesake

Though it saw one of the first successful applications of front-wheel drive and a monocoque chassis, the Traction Avant gained just as much fame for being the wheels of choice for Gallic criminal gangs. One notorious group of Parisian outlaws was actually so fond of the car that the criminals became known as the ‘Gang des Tractions Avant’.

    Lamborghini Countach: Night-time courier service

With its playboy image, intimidating appearance and performance to match, the Countach was a favourite of American drug barons in the 80s. Rumour has it that an American 'mule' or drug-runner used one to carry out cross-country overnight excursions – with a baffled engine bay and masked headlights (the driver wore night-vision googles) to avoid detection.

    Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W140): Best car, worst intentions

Though it’s not exactly the most agile transport, the W140 was the chosen chariot of many an underworld chief, not to mention other big cheeses – from Russian oligarchs to gangster rappers – perhaps united by an acceptance of the S-Class’s ‘best car in the world’ label.

Valentino Rossi makes light of Jeremy Burgess' interview

    from TWOWHEELSBLOG
In a long interview that was published in Spanish newspaper Marca, Valentino Rossi’s legendary crewchief Jeremy Burgess was asked if Rossi still has a chance of winning the world title and he said, “It would be a wonderful dream, and a small miracle… “Valentino has already won seven titles in the premier class, and the chances of that re-occuring is shrinking. We must accept it …”
“When you’re young you have certain characteristics like courage and the need to take risks that slowly disappears when you become older. At a certain point you need to feel more at ease, more relaxed and in sports even that 1% makes the difference.”
In today’s pre-event press conference at the Catalunya circuit Rossi was asked about ‘Jerry’s’ comment on the age factor and the Italian made light of it.
“Mine or his?” laughed Rossi, who then became more serious. “We must be realistic, to win the world championship will be very difficult, because there are three riders who are very fast, and we have to add Crutchlow. I still believe that I can improve, but it is not easy to regain confidence after two difficult years. Working on the details we still have room for improvement, but the title is still far away.”
Catalunya was where Rossi beat Jorge Lorenzo in a stunning last turn pass in 2009, and the Italian was was also asked if he could repeat it this weekend.
If Jorge waits for me, yes!” laughed Rossi “He’s too fast!” and a smiling Lorenzo responded, “I’m sorry I cannot wait! But maybe you are faster than me this weekend…”
MotoGP’s first free practice at the Catalunya circuit starts tomorrow morning at 9:55 am (CET).

    grand départ !
