Fiesta et 208 R5 à Ypres

The new Ford Fiesta R5 and Peugeot 208 T16 R5 are poised to make their first public appearances as course cars at the Geko Ypres Rally on June 28-29. The will be driven by Belgium’s Thierry Neuville and Briton Kris Meeke respectively.

After months of testing on asphalt and gravel, the latest challengers from Ford and Peugeot are due to break cover at the sixth round of the 2013 FIA European Rally Championship.

Qatar M-Sport’s Thierry Neuville will drive the Ford Fiesta R5 which has been developed by M-Sport, while the 2009 IRC champ Kris Meeke will be in the la Peugeot 208 T16 R5. These two cars have been designed to comply with the FIA’s R5 regulations but have yet to be homologated. The Belgian organisers have nonetheless agreed to let them cover the 2013 event’s 20 stages as ‘zero’ cars.

Also new in Ypres will be the new range of tyres introduced by Michelin to comply with the FIA’s Regional Rally regulations which were introduced on May 1.

Meanwhile, a Qualifying Stage will be run on the Thursday evening. Until now, this procedure has been restricted to snow and gravel rounds, so this is an innovation from the organisers of the Belgian asphalt event. The test will permit the fastest drivers to choose their running order for the first leg.

The main entries include Freddy Loix (record holder with seven Ypres victories to his name) in a factory Skoda Fabia S2000. Craig Breen, Jean-Mathieu Léandri and Bryan Bouffier (co-driven by Lara Vanneste) will start in Peugeot 207 S2000s. The 2011 PWRC champion Hayden Paddon will make his comeback to the international scene in a Ford Fiesta S2000, while Renault Sport Technologies will have Méganes for Bonnefis and Consani. The list continues with François Delecour (Peugeot 207 S2000) and Pieter Tsjoen (Skoda S2000).

Après plusieurs mois d’essais sur terre et asphalte, Ford et Peugeot vont présenter ensemble leurs derniers modèles à l’occasion de la 6^e manche du Championnat d’Europe des Rallyes FIA.

Le pilote Qatar M-Sport Thierry Neuville sera au volant de la nouvelle Ford Fiesta R5 développée par M-Sport, alors que le champion IRC 2009 Kris Meeke ouvrira l’épreuve sur la Peugeot 208 T16 R5. Ces deux nouvelles voitures, répondant à la réglementation FIA R5, ne sont pas encore homologuées, mais l’organisateur belge a accepté de les faire rouler sur les 20 spéciales de l’édition 2013 en voitures « 0 ».

Il y aura beaucoup de nouveauté à Ypres puisque Michelin proposera à ses partenaires une toute nouvelle gamme de pneumatiques répondant à la réglementation FIA « Rally Regional » entrée en vigueur au 1^er mai 2013.

D’autre part, une Qualifying Stage est programmée jeudi soir. Jusque-là réservée aux épreuves terre et neige, le Rallye d’Ypres innove avec la première Qualifying Stage asphalte. Celle-ci permettra aux concurrents prioritaires de choisir leur position de départ pour la première étape.

Parmi ces top-pilotes, Freddy Loix – recordman de victoires à Ypres (7) – est attendu sur une Skoda Fabia S2000 officielle. MOTO GUZZI V75 BY VENIER CUSTOMS

There are a tiny handful of builders who consistently hit the mark with every bike they create. In Italy, one of those builders is Venier Customs, which took home a trophy last month from the Biker Fest for this beautiful Moto Guzzi V75.

The bike is called ‘Corsaiola,’ which loosely translates to mean ‘speedy’. It’s based on a small block 1989 V75, which was the forerunner of the Guzzi’s current V7 range. Ironically, the V75 has more power than the current bike—58 as opposed to 48 hp. That’s emissions regulations for you.

Stefano Venier is a thoroughly modern craftsman, working out the initial design in Photoshop and then using CAD to machine the parts he needs. For this bike, the frame was reworked at the back and a new tank and seat unit installed. (The original V75 was somewhat blighted by the 1980s fetish for plastic, with an especially ungainly tank.) Other custom parts include the rear fender and side panels, and custom brackets were fabricated to attach everything neatly to the frame.

The lines of the bike are simply immaculate now. They’re helped by the elegant Mistral exhaust system, hooked up to the huge cylinders jutting out to the sides. The engine has been overhauled and painted light grey; the wheels are original, albeit restored. They now run Avon Roadrider tires. (“The bike is quite fast and you need some real grip,” Stefano comments.)

The finishing touch is a simple but effective black-and-white paint job. It’s a great example of the old becoming new again—Venier’s V75 wouldn’t look out of place in a showroom next to Moto Guzzi’s current range of V7s.

Rallye de Sardaigne :A third win for Marc Coma / La passe de trois pour Marc Coma

Already winner of the first two round of the FIM Rally Raid World Championship, Marc Coma (KTM Michelin) added a third success to this series in Sardinia. He remains unbeaten this season, and leads of course the series at mid season.

Déjà vainqueur des deux premières épreuves du championnat du monde FIM de rallye raid, Marc Coma (KTM Michelin) vient d’ajouter un troisième succès en s’imposant au Sardinia Rallye. L’officiel KTM réalise un sans faute depuis le début de saison.

As this five days race is not organised in a desert, some of the best riders were not using their usual rally raid bike but came in Sardinia with an Enduro bike. Marc Coma chooses a 450 EXC KTM, and the Spaniard didn’t had an easy race as he faced some new rivals such as Cyril Despres (Yamaha Michelin) on his new bike, or Paolo Gonçalves now on a Honda.

After two days the standings were pretty tight as the three leaders (Italian Alessandro Botturi, Coma and Despres) were in the same minute! But in the third stage Coma had a perfect day and took the lead five minutes ahead of Despres. The fourth stage was even better for the KTM rider who increases his leadership to nine minutes, and then secured his third success in Sardinia. Coma wins the race followed by Gonçalves and fellow countryman Joan Pedredo, while Despres missed the podium by eleven seconds.

Marc Coma: “It’s great to win here for the third time, but the most important is to increase my leadership in the standings. The main difference with the previous editions was the weather, with rain during the first day; the navigation was very tough this year, it was sometimes stressful when you had to lead all your rivals and you had to be very well focused.”

Cyril Despres: “To come here was a last minute decision that we took with Yamaha, our goal was to discover ourselves during a race. I just did a few tests before the race with my new Yamaha and we learned a lot during these five days. I did a few mistakes and missed the podium, but I came here to prepare the future and we’re happy with this experience.”

Disputée sur cinq journées et sur un terrain atypique où plusieurs des favoris utilisaient des motos d’enduro plutôt que leurs habituelles machines de rallye, cette troisième manche du championnat n’allait pas être une simple formalité pour Coma qui trouvait de nouveaux rivaux sur son chemin avec l’arrivée de Cyril Despres (Yamaha Michelin) sur sa nouvelle monture et la passage de Paolo Gonçalves sur Honda.

Si les positions restaient très serrées après deux jours de course puisque les trois premiers (l’Italien Alessandro Botturi, Coma et Despres) se tenaient en moins d’une minute, l’épreuve allait se décanter lors de la troisième étape ou Coma se forgeait une avance de cinq minutes sur Despres. La quatrième étape était encore meilleure pour l’Espagnol, qui abordait la cinquième et dernière journée avec neuf minutes d’avance sur Gonçalves et filait vers un nouveau succès, le troisième pour lui en Sardaigne. Coma s’impose à Gonçalves et a son compatriote Joan Pedredo, Cyril Despres échouant pour onze petites secondes au pied du podium.

Marc Coma : « Gagner pour la troisième fois ici est satisfaisant, tout comme consolider ma place en tête du Championnat du Monde. La plus grande différence de cette édition par rapport aux précédentes fut la météo ; sur le plan navigation, elle était très difficile cette année, ce fut stressant en sollicitant une très grosse concentration en particulier quand on ouvrait la piste, ce qui m’est arrivé de nombreuses fois. »

Cyril Despres : « S’engager ici fut une décision de dernière minute, prise en commun avec Yamaha pour que nous fassions une course de rodage. J’ai découvert ma nouvelle moto au fil de l’épreuve, quelques erreurs me coutent une place sur le podium mais nous avons beaucoup appris et c’était le but principal de notre participation. »
