    Stories of Bike EP6: Chemistry

Combine all the elements that make motorcycling great: the sights, the sounds, the smells, the sun on your face, the people you meet and it makes for an intoxicating chemistry.

It's the kind of chemistry that this 2009 Triumph Bonneville owner discovered as a boy and has been hooked on ever since.

    ’57 PORSCHE SPEEDSTER

There aren’t many people in the world who’ll argue that the Porsche Speedster isn’t one of the most beautiful cars of the 20th century. The only real problem with owning one is the fact that it cost so much, you can’t ever really enjoy driving it like it should be driven without fearing that you’ll put it into a wall and cost yourself a small fortune in panel-beater bills.
The only solution to this dilemma is a car like this, an extraordinarily accurate, modern re-creation of a 1957 Porsche Speedster. The body, chassis, engine and transmission are all very close approximations of the original, in fact it’s impossible to tell it isn’t an original without opening the trunk or hood and having a poke around.

This particular 356 Speedster was built by Vintage Speedsters in the USA, it’s powered by a 1915cc Type 1 VW engine with a 4 speed manual (3:88 “Freeway Flyer”) transmission. It’s also fitted with dual carburettors, a dual tip exhaust, front disc brakes and a beautiful Nardi steering wheel.
If your Mrs is more understanding than mine, the eBay auction is here and the bidding is currently sitting at $19,350.oo with 6 days left.

In the world of custom motorcycles, there are builders who are innovators and there are builders who are creators. The innovators take an existing donor motorcycle and work their magic to transform the motorcycle into a custom motorcycle. The creators are a smaller group and they seek to build a motorcycle from scratch. They try to create their own frames, braking and suspension systems as well as all the components which their imagination requires to complete the project.

Creators are the people who push the boundaries of design. Their concepts are not always practical and the motorcycles they build are unconventional. Because their motorcycles are such a personal expression, conflict of opinion over the motorcycle is never far away. If a standard motorcycle is a still life painting, a creator’s motorcycle is a Picasso.

Constant van der Colff is a custom motorcycle creator from Pretoria. The Wildebeestrange of motorcycles is a product of his imagination. The wildebeest, or gnu, is the animal which opitimises the African plains. They are rugged, tough and unique looking antelope. Con’s motorcycles are similar to their namesake.

Our featured Wildebeest uses a big twin Harley engine. Just about everything else on this mechanical marvel is unique. Even the front and rear suspension are products of Con’s technical creativity.

We’ve been following the Spyker’s development for a while now. Back in March we brought you word from the super car’s Geneva Motor Show launch and followed that up with news that the Dutch sports car maker was planning an open top version. Now we have some official renderings of the convertible variant.
Spyker chose Pebble Beach, California as the location to unveil the machine to the press, which fits with the sort of location that the machine will be used in. Spyker describe Pebble Beach as “the car’s natural habitat,” adding that they chose this location and time because “Car enthusiasts from around the globe descend upon exquisitely beautiful Pebble Beach for the Concours d’Elegance weekend.” Although the new machine has been official named theSpyker B6 Venator Spyder Concept, we understand that the green light has been given for production of the car that stays true to the B6 coupe’s shape.
The interior has also stayed pretty much as it is in the coupe except for Spyker’s mission statement which is written in Latin on the seats, “Nulla tenaci invia est via” or “For the tenacious no road is impassable.” The “turbofan” wheels from the coupe are here in the cabriolet and there been no upgrade to the 375bhp mid-mounted V-6 engine.

The initial batch of Spyker B6 Ventors is expected to be sold in the Middle East and Europe in 2014 before the car is brought to the rest of the world including America in 2014. We’ve not had a price confirmed but internet gossip is suggesting a $150,000 asking price.
