    10 years ago in Catalonia (Part 2): the Peugeot 206 WRC’s swansong / Catalunya 2003 : le rallye des « dernières » (part 2)

It was in Catalonia in 2003 that Gilles Panizzi chalked up the Peugeot 206 WRC’s 24th and last victory in the FIA World Rally Championship. The car earned three Manufacturers’ titles for the French make, plus two Drivers’ crowns for Marcus Grönholm.
Although it was probably a little short and too compact, Peugeot’s city car enjoyed an impressive career in rallying against machines like the Ford Focus, Subaru Impreza, Mitsubishi Lancer, Seat Cordoba and Skoda Octavia.
Its transversely-mounted engine; longitudinal gearbox and complex electronics made obtaining reliability a long and costly process. Even so, its debut in Corsica in 1999 saw François Delecour emerge in front after two stages. It was also on the French island that it claimed its first world class stage win (SS7), although it had to wait until the 2000 Swedish Rally for its maiden triumph, with Grönholm in control. The seven events between the two produced some bitter disappointments, like when all three Peugeots refused to start one morning during the 2000 Rallye Monte Carlo.
Soon, however, the 206 WRC began to outclass its rivals, on every type of terrain. A more competitive Evolution 2 version (active rear diff, new turbo, etc.) was introduced in Catalonia in 2000 and took seven wins, including five in 2000 (New Zealand, Finland, Corsica, Sanremo and Australia). That was sufficient to make sure of that year’s Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ titles.
From Cyprus 2001, the car had a five-speed gearbox and benefitted from work to improve its reliability and strength. Its design was also simplified to facilitate service work. The third variant won eight events in 2001 and 2002 before handing over to the most sophisticated version in Greece in 2002.
The newcomer finished first on eight more WRC rounds, including the 2003 Rally Catalunya 2003 where Panizzi clinched his win on the very last stage (‘Santa Julia de Vilatorta-Viladrau’, 35.18km). That was the final WRC stage victory for a factory car.
In total, the model claimed 419 stages, the last of which was the work of Henning Solberg in Cyprus in 2004. The Peugeot 206 WRC’s score of 24 world championship successes would later be equalled by that of the Citroën Xsara WRC.
