FACTORY 5 GTM
The Factory 5 GTM Supercar is the American answer to the highly-acclaimed, British made Ultima GTR. Both are kit built supercars with a mid-mounted engine, space-frame chassis, fibreglass body shell and a top speed that’ll make your eyes water. Both cars are capable, rather easily, of embarrassing any supercar you throw at them and both can be built for a relatively paltry sum (if you compare price tags with the Ferrari Enzos of the world).
The basic Factory 5 GTM kit costs $20,990 USD, once you have it you’ll need to source a 1997-2004 Chevrolet C5 Corvette as an engine/suspension donor and get your hands on either a Porsche G50 or a Mendeola 5 speed transmission. Factory 5 says that the average build time for the GTM is about 600 hours and the average total cost is about $50,000 USD depending on the final specifications that you choose and how cheaply you can source a C5.
The performance specifications of the GTM were tested by Car and Driver Magazine in 2007, the GTM had a recorded 0-60 time of 3.0 seconds and a 1/4 mile time of 11.0 seconds (with a 450 hp engine installed).
If you’ve been looking for a winter project and you’ve got access to an old C5 Corvette, you might want to click the link and visit the official Factory 5 website here.

BMW R60/2 BY BLITZ MOTORCYCLES
Blitz Motorcycles have been enjoying a long love affair with old BMW ‘airheads.’ To date, more than a handful of unique (and often eccentric) boxer customs have rolled out oftheir workshop. One of their earliest builds was ‘Great Escape‘—a murdered out BMW R60/2 that had everyone’s tongues wagging and arguably helped put Blitz on the map.
They’ve just finished up another ‘/2′ but this one’s been given an entirely different treatment. “Since we are known for having built the ‘Great Escape’”, says Blitz’s Fred Jourden, “we thought it’d be really challenging to go for a totally different colour scheme.”
The donor bike, a 1963 R60/2, wasn’t running when Blitz received it—its owner, an older gentleman who resides in Paris, had owned it for 15 years, but not ridden it for the last 10. His only request was that the rebuilt bike should have an electric starter (by his own admission he had become lazy with age and didn’t want to have to kick start it). For these reasons the engine was swapped out for an ’83 R80/7 mill and a new ignition system installed.
The stock frame and suspension, including the quirky Earles front end, were left intact to retain the quintessential “/2″ look. They were powder coated matte dark grey, the wheels matte black, and the engine and a few key bits gloss black. Another stock item is the bike’s original Denfeld solo seat.
The centrepiece of the build is a vintage BSA fuel tank which, in Blitz’ trademark style, was mounted in the exact condition it was found. According to Fred, “We’ve wanted to mount that BSA tank on a ‘/2′ since we built the BSW.” Since the owner is French, Blitz thought it obvious to add some red to the already blue and white tank, creating a Tricolore theme. This was achieved with a bespoke leather harness, made by leather specialists Fleet Ilya (who also supplied the tank harness for the BSW).
A full rewire was undertaken, with the starter button integrated into the front brake lever clamp. Everything now runs off a new lithium-ion battery. The tail light is from a vintage bicycle, converted to 12V, and the headlight has been replaced by a number board with a single 12V bulb peeking through.
Custom made alloy air filters take care of intake duties. The headers have been wrapped, and lead into Campbell mufflers. The ‘/2′ now rolls on Firestone Deluxe (rear) and Coker Diamond (front) rubber. The blue cannister attached to the frame is a genuine vintage motorcycle fire extinguisher.
The result is a quirky yet cool bobber, loaded with character and vintage flavour. As Fred puts it: “Nobody might even understand it, but the owner loves it. And that’s all that matters.”

From Mortimer to Lorenzo: Yamaha’s 200th premier class victory / De Mortimer à Lorenzo : 200 victoires pour Yamaha en catégorie reine
Having claimed his own 50th career win the previous time out at Phillip Island, Lorenzo’s Motegi success marked his 30th in the premier class as well as the 200th for Yamaha, whose first as a company in the premier class came courtesy of Britain’s Chas Mortimer in the 1973 Spanish Grand Prix at Montjuic Park, Barcelona.
Naturally, a wide range of famous names have contributed to the two centuries of race successes, including Giacomo Agostini who collected six victories for Yamaha en route to his final title in 1975. Later on, Americans made a significant input in the form of Kenny Roberts, Eddie Lawson and Wayne Rainey.
Italians Luca Cadalora and Max Biaggi added to the tally; ironically, Biaggi would often be challenged by Valentino Rossi, who would join Yamaha in 2004. No less than 49 of the most recent 50 wins have come courtesy of either Rossi or Lorenzo, with the only exception being the Dutch TT of 2011 which was won by Ben Spies.
“It's a very special day and to be the rider to get the 200 wins is a great honour,” Lorenzo proudly stated at Twin Ring Motegi. “To win at Honda’s home race is even more special! It was a very difficult race today; they were very close but I never gave up and tried to be even faster, braking harder and opening the gap more. Finally I was able to make a little gap. We are very proud of this victory: for the result, for the circumstances and for the championship. It couldn’t be better.”
“It’s absolutely fantastic to be able to celebrate our 200th Grand Prix victory here in Japan at our home race, with such an incredible performance from Jorge Lorenzo,” added Lin Jarvis, Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing.
“He totally dominated, not just the weekend but also the race under extreme pressure from his rivals. I’d like to say thanks to all of the riders and teams and all of the sponsors and partners and everyone involved in bringing us these memorable victories over the years. May we go on to 201 in Valencia!”
The success marked Yamaha’s seventh win of the 2013 season.
“We can be very proud and happy to witness this incredible achievement here in Motegi,” commented Kouichi Tsuji, General Manager of Yamaha Motor Company’s Motorsport Development Division. “Jorge delivered a perfect performance to give us our 200th Grand Prix victory, continuing in the long tradition of success that we have enjoyed now since 1972. For Yamaha it is also very special to be able to enjoy this victory here in Japan for our home Grand Prix.”
The 2013 MotoGP™ season now rolls on to the Valencia season-closer on 10 November, in which Lorenzo will challenge for a third riders’ world title.

This weekend, Volkswagen claimed its second FIA-sanctioned title after securing the Cross Country Rally World Cup in 2005.
Volkswagen’s presence in motorsport dates back to 1966 and the creation of Formel Vee, a single-seater racing series for cars powered by a Beetle engine. In 1977, a Group 1 Golf GTi made its debut in the German Rally Championship, while a Golf GTi 1600 won the following year’s German Estering Cup (rallycross).
The brand’s first international success came in 1980 when a Volkswagen Type 183 Iltis took a surprise win on the Paris-Dakar in the hands of Sweden’s Freddy Kottulinsky. After an unsuccessful attempt at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb with a twin-engined (!) Golf, VW achieved its most prominent results in rallying and rally-raids. In 1986, for example, Kenneth Eriksson won the Group A world title driving a VW Golf GTi, but there was no prize for being the best manufacturer…
In 2003, Volkswagen returned to the Dakar with a ‘Tarek’ buggy, a prototype of the Race Touareg which made its debut one year later. In 2005, three wins (Rally Por Las Pampas, Rallye du Maroc and Rallye d’Orient) helped Volkswagen to secure the FIA Cross Country World Cup, its first international recompense.
The make went on to collect three straight Dakar wins before notching up its first WRC Manufacturers’ title thanks to its ninth win of 2013 today when Ogier and Latvala came first and second on the RallyRACC-Rally de Espana.

2014 Porsche Macan: official spy shots released
It seems like carmakers got so used to spy shots they’ve begun releasing their own ‘official sets’ of stolen images. What we have here is in fact a bunch of offcial images released by legendary German manufacturer Porsche and starring the upcoming 2014 Porsche Macan, a new SUV that share the same architecture with the Audi Q5 and will position itself right below the Cayenne. The model will be officially unveiled in November at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.
Actually, mules of the Porsche Macan have been spotted around so many times in the past few months that they probably thought they could do a much better service to the cause by releasing their own pics, rather than crying over spilt milk. They even uploaded a few of them on their official facebook page, and since we are looking at clear pictures in high-res, talking about teasing images would feel a little out of place here.
The Porsche guys have been much more sketchy on the details concerning mechanics and performance figures: all we get to know for now is that the new baby Cayenne will boast a combined fuel consumption in accordance with EU 6 standards, 9.2-6.1 l/100km, and CO2 emission of 216-159 g/km. Which doesn’t say much, really, but we will surely get to know all the specs in a matter of weeks, if not days. However, rumor has it that it will eventually hit the markets with two twin-turbo V6 engine options: a 3.0- and 3.6-liter. We expect an 8-speed PDK automatic gearbox to be part of the mix as well, with a six-speed manual transmission option too. The Macan will show up in a Porsche dealership near you at some point in the first half of 2014.

BRING BACK THE TOUGE
Drifting is big and it’s clever, but there’s always been the back room boys, the ones who just want to have fun and explore the soul-surfing side of things. Fredrik Sørlie and his Cressida are well known on the Scandinavian scene and this film goes above and beyond the usual drift sequence. In it we get to see some touge action, but we get a look behind the scenes too. I love the grassroots nature of Fredrik’s car when put together with high production values like this… So sit back and celebrate the simple movement of sideways.
Oh and if you want to know more on the 2JZ-equipped Cressida, check back later this week when our full feature on Fredrik and his Toyota drops!
