Moto GP : Marquez on pole for second race of the year / Márquez se confirme en pole au Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas

MotoGP™ qualifying at the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas saw Marc Marquez clinch pole with a new record lap of COTA (2'02.886), with Dani Pedrosa and Stefan Bradl joining him on the front row.

Marquez is quick wherever he rides but he appears to specifically enjoy the state-of-the-art Austin track where round two of the season is taking place and he secured his 11^th premier class pole position by 0.289s from Repsol Honda teammate Pedrosa – having dominated all weekend so far. 

A solid effort from LCR Honda’s German rider Bradl put him at the back of row one as he got to within 0.423s of the rampant Marquez – making it an all Honda front three.

It will be an all-Yamaha second row for Sunday’s race, with Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) placing his ‘Open’ Yamaha fourth, 0.467s off pole. Movistar Yamaha MotoGP pair Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi were fifth and sixth, Lorenzo registering a time just 0.003s off Espargaro’s, with Rossi 0.001s behind his teammate.

Heading the third row is Ducati’s Cal Crutchlow (+1.007s), in front of compatriot Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3) and Italian Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing). Smith and Iannone were both also just over a second behind Marquez.

On row four, meanwhile are Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech3) and Alvaro Baustista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini).

The fastest ‘Open’ Honda rider Scott Redding will start just behind his GO&FUN Honda Gresini teammate Bautista at the head of row five, having missed Q2 by just 0.074s.

Sunday’s MotoGP race takes place at 2pm local time in Texas (GMT -5).

Jamais inquiété par ses adversaires depuis le début du week-end à Austin, Marc Márquez s’est assuré sa seconde position en deux courses cette année et a établi un nouveau record du Circuit of the Americas en battant le chrono qui lui avait valu la pole en 2013. Suivent le Champion du Monde en titre son coéquipier Dani Pedrosa et Stefan Bradl.

Incroyablement rapide au Circuit of the Americas l’an dernier, où il avait remporté sa première victoire en MotoGP™, Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda) demeure hors de portée de ses adversaires ce week-end à Austin et a signé pole position et nouveau record de la piste texane en 2’02.773, alors qu’il avait pris la pole en 2’03.021 l’an dernier.

Dans l’exercice bien particulier que sont les qualifications, Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) a réussi à revenir à 0.289s de son coéquipier pour garantir sa présence en première ligne mais aura beaucoup à faire pour rivaliser avec son jeune compatriote en course. Márquez avait l’an dernier fait le pari de partir sur pneu dur et était resté en seconde position du départ jusqu’à la mi-course pour ensuite doubler et se défaire de Pedrosa avec une aisance déconcertante.

Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda) est venu placer une troisième RC213V Factory en première ligne, à 0.423s de la pole tandis que Aleix Espargaró (NGM Forward Racing) a réussi à s’offrir un départ devant Jorge Lorenzo et Valentino Rossi, du team Movistar Yamaha MotoGP. Repêché en Q2 de justesse après avoir réalisé le deuxième temps de la Q1, le Catalan, seul pilote du Top 6 à utiliser le pneu réservé aux Open, a fini à 0.044s de la première ligne et avec respectivement trois et quatre millièmes de seconde d’avance sur Lorenzo et Rossi.

Septième, Cal Crutchlow sera le premier pilote Ducati sur la grille de sa seconde course sur Desmosedici mais terminait à une demi-seconde du Top 6. Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing) et Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) ont quant à eux pris les neuvième et dixième positions, derrière Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3) et dans un groupe très serré que complétaient Pol Espargaró (Monster Yamaha Tech3) et Álvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini).

Bonne performance de Scott Redding (GO&FUN Honda Gresini), treizième sur la grille après avoir manqué de dérober la place en Q2 d’Aleix Espargaró (NGM Forward Racing) pour seulement 0.074s. Le vice-Champion du Monde Moto2™ est le pilote sur RCV1000R Open le mieux classé, avec près d’une demi-seconde d’avance sur Nicky Hayden (Drive M7 Aspar).

Colin Edwards (NGM Forward Racing) sera dix-neuvième au départ de sa course nationale tandis que Mike di Meglio (Avintia Blusens) continue son travail d’adaptation au MotoGP™ et partira en fond de grille après avoir échoué à seulement seize millièmes de Dani Petrucci (Ioda Racing Project)

WTCC 2014 / LÓPEZ WINS FIRST POLE FOR CITROËN / Lopez devant les alsaciens

José María López won the first qualifying shootout in WTCC history and this was the icing on the cake for Citroën on their maiden appearance in the series.

The C-Elisée cars dominated the field, filling the three top spots in each session of this season’s opener at Marrakech. Eventually Yvan Muller and Sébastien Loeb qualified in second and third, but any of them could have been on pole as well.The Chevrolet RML cars were the closest competitors for the Citroën, but their fastest drivers – Tom Chilton, Hugo Valente, Tom Coronel and Dušan Borković – were more than one-and-a-half second behind.It was not a happy day for Honda and LADA. The Japanese manufacturer lost Tarquini’s Civid after the crash in practice two and saw its remaining three cars dropped after Q2. As for LADA, only Thompson’s Granta qualified for Q2, but went no further.

Q1The Citroën trio booked their spots for Q2 in the early stages, with Yvan Muller, Sébastien Loeb and José María López filling the first three spots ahead of four Chevrolet drivers: Tom Chilton, Hugo Valente, Tom Coronel and Dušan Borković.Mehdi Bennani was the best of the Honda men, while James Thompson was the only LADA driver to advance to Q2. Franz Engstler was fastest in the TC2T class.  The session was red-flagged forty seconds before the end when Petr Fulín crashed at T11.The following drivers went through to Q2: Muller, Loeb, López, Chilton, Valente, Coronel, Borković, Bennani, Michelisz, Monteiro, Thompson and Münnich.

Q2Loeb, López and Muller were classified in the order, covered by only five thousandths of a second, to lead the rest of the field.A brilliant Borković and Chilton claimed the two remaining spots for Q3.Tom Coronel qualified in tenth and won pole position on the reversed grid for Race 2; Mehdi Bennani will take the start alongside him on the front row.

Q3López won pole position thanks to a record split time in the third sector that helped him to beat Muller by 18 thousandths of a second.The same third sector relegated Loeb in third position after he had set the best split times in the first second sectors.Chilton posted the fourth fastest lap, while Borković was black flagged as he had exited the pitlane before he was allowed to do.

On retrouve un format classique avec trois séances : Q1, Q2 et Q3 où l’on retrouvera les cinq meilleurs pilotes.

Q1 : Cette qualification démarre sans Gabriele Tarquini, forfait pour ce week-end. Dès le troisième tour, Yvan Muller se hisse en tête du classement avec un temps de 1’43’824. Les trois Citroën sont encore largement devant avec ensuite 4 Chevrolet puis 3 Honda. Touchette en fin de séance pour Fulin.

Q2 : Les trois Citroën sont regroupées en cinq millièmes de secondes avec le meilleur temps pour Sébastien Loeb. Les cinq meilleurs temps seront qualifiés pour la Q3 et pour marquer les premiers points de la saison. Très bon depuis le début du week-end, Hugo Valente a connu des problèmes sur sa Chevrolet et doit se contenter du douzième chrono.

Avec la grille inversée pour la 2e course, c’est Tom Coronel qui partira en première position.

Q3 : Auteur du meilleur temps dans le premier secteur, Sébastien Loeb doit finalement se contenter du troisième temps derrière ses deux coéquipiers de Citroën ! Le nonuple champion du monde partira de la seconde place après la disqualification d’Yvan Muller, l’alsacien ayant coupé une chicane.

Supersport : Première pole position pour Coghlan

Pour l'unique séance qualificative de la catégorie Superport, Kev Coghlan (DMC Panavto-Yamaha) s'est montré dominateur et a signé la pole position dès la mi-séance, contrant les assauts répétés de Patrick Jacobsen (Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres), second malgré une chute en fin de séance, et de Jules Cluzel (MV Agusta RC–Yakhnich Motorsport). Gêné dans son dernier tour chrono alors qu'il était en avance sur le meilleur temps, le Français complète la première ligne.

Dans son sillage, l'autre tricolore Florian Marino (Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres) est une fois de plus 4ème à seulement trois dixièmes du leader. Il devance Michael van der Mark (PATA Honda World Superbike Team) et le triple Champion Kenan Sofuoglu (MAHI Racing Team India), en demi-teinte depuis le début du week-end.

La troisième ligne fait la part belle à Lorenzo Zanetti (PATA Honda World Superbike Team), Vladimir Leonov (MV Agusta RC-Yakhnich Motorsport) qui place une seconde MV Agusta dans le Top 10, et Riccardo Russo, 9ème malgré un problème technique qui lui a valu d'écourter sa séance.

A noter, la performance du rookie thaïlandais Ratthapark Wilairot (Core PTR Honda), auteur du 10ème temps pour sa première qualification européenne dans la catégorie et sur sa nouvelle machine.
