The Kooples - TODAY, TONIGHT
TODAY, TONIGHT sets itself at the iconic Ace Cafe during the 1950's, a British institution heralded as a place that came to define Rock N Roll and motorcycle culture.
The Kooples short film directed by FRED&NICK tells the emotive story of a young boy racer, Mikey, intertwined in a life-changing game of 'THE COIN DROP' ... During its zenith the Ace Cafe became a mecca for biker-tribes - an extended congregation that brought riders together to race in legendary competitions. The riders were all about testing limits in every facet of their lives from the bikes through to relationships - their chief motivation on a daily basis was all about breaking frontiers, realigning boundaries and not giving a damn wherever possible along the way. Total freedom and carefree outlook.
Grammy-nominated directors Nicolas Jack Davies and Frederick Scott who together create beautiful, raw and intimate human portraits across their work in film, documentary, commercial and music video. "The opportunity to create a short narrative film with The Kooples was of great appeal to us, not least as the project had the added association with the Ace Cafe. It's rare to find a world so rich in stories and characters, and one that has played such a pivotal role in British culture. More than motorbikes and Rock n Roll, the Ace Café was one of a handful of muster points across the country for the post-war teenage revolution. On our many visits in recent months, we've noted that the same spirit is alive and well today and the perfect match for The Kooples attitude and SS14 collection- a film that gently connects two eras through memory and experience became the spark point of our script" - FRED&NICK
Today, Tonight is the first release from The Kooples' new creative division, TK Foundry, set up to create original music, film, technology and art with a global network of cutting-edge creators, tastemakers and artisans.

‘73 BMW R60/5 – Dream Wheels Heritage
Written by Tim Holdup.
Let’s face it, building a custom motorcycle can be a financially draining task. But couple that with a post-GFC economy and it can really be a feat. Yet these are the very factors that can also lead builders to think outside the square and develop innovative, alternative fabrication techniques. This is how “Copper”, a 1973 BMW R60 was bought to life. Meet Dream Wheels Heritage, a shop run by Hélder Moura, a marketer from Portugal and Jose Miguel Martins, an automotive mechanic with 30 years experience.
She’s named “Copper”, with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Not only does the build use copper plating throughout, but the R60 also happens to be a former police bike. “A dream donor bike”, in the words of Hélder.
“Copper” features a hand-made subframe section and with the rest of the frame this piece sees all the welds hidden which provides a unique one-piece appearance. Mounting to the subframe is a one-off seat. It’s complemented by a matching set of tank pads, with themselves reference the numerous other uses of copper plating throughout the build.
Receiving a set of 41mm forks and twin brake rotor setup from a Honda VTR 1000 which a more solid appearance and provides much improved braking, the front end is finished off with the use of a 1950′s pioneer fog light modified into a headlight. Suspending the rear is a set of new shocks which also sees the reservoirs and lock nuts plated to keep up the consistency in copper usage througout. “Copper” also sees the use of black 18 inch rims front and rear laced up with copper plated spokes and wrapped up in a set of Firestone deluxe champion rubber.
Breathing life into the 600cc boxer twin engine is a set of Bing carburetors to suit an R100, which have been mounted with a set of hand-made manifolds along with K and N conical filters, a 2 into 2 exhaust system with copper plated fixtures is the exhaust of choice by Dream Wheels Heritage. A hydraulic clutch has also been utilised for smooth consistent clutch operation.
With such a strong first build, be sure to keep an eye out for the economically bright future of Portugal’s Dream Wheels Heritage.

BULL CYCLES’ HARLEY NIGHTSTER
I’ve always thought that the older Nightsters are the best-looking Harley Sportster variant. The mix of dark finishes, wire wheels and blacked-out hubs gave them a subtle, low-key vibe.
This custom Nightster is anything but subtle, though. And none the worse for it. Nicknamed ‘Traffic,’ it’s the work of Chicago-based Bull Cycles, the shop run by fabrication specialist Justin Powers.
Justin describes his inspiration as “modern muscle car with a twist of café. In my mind, it’s what a modern Sportster should look like.” He adds: “I use the term cafe lightly, as not to offend the purists! However, everyone calls it a cafe racer at first glance, so I’ll let the public decide.”
The base bike was a 2007-model Nightster. Fuel injected reliability was a big deal on this bike, so the ’07 was a must. The tank was sectioned two inches and the pump reconfigured to allow for a lower stance.
It’s far from a bolt-on special: the tail unit and side panels are hand-fabricated, and the under-mount tracker bars and LED projector headlight surround are Bull’s own design. The stock belt drive has been swapped out for a chain, and allows room for the 180-section rear rim. The paint is a flat anodized silver, and works beautifully.
“There are lots of little details that make up the difference,” says Justin, who cheerfully admits to being a control freak and micro-manager. And that’s fine by us: this is one of those rare customs that rewards extremely close inspection.

BSMC GEAR GUIDE # 7
PRODUCT REVIEW – BILTWELL GRINGO LE HELMET
As the new wave custom scene blossoms, there are a number of companies that have cottoned on and started gearing their products towards this expanding market. Biltwell are different, they grew out of the scene. Their products are designed from the bottom up for builders both shed and professional, and those who ride their custom machines. They are the real deal.
Founded in 2005, the Biltwell crew rebelled against the excesses of the conventional custom scene and the mainstream motorcycle corporations. Growing up surfing, skating and falling off BMXs gave them a healthy disregard for authority and the established rules of the game. They set out to make quality, practical products that represent good value to those who share their ethos.

BSMC III 2014
Go Big or Go Home is the mantra for this year’s BSMC III Exhibition Event 2014. After enjoying the hospitality of the wonderful Shoreditch Studios venue and team we realised that our third event just wasn’t going to fit the space, so we’ve spent several months looking for a bigger place with as much character, somewhere that would allow us to keep the easy-going, hang-out-all-day, non trade-show vibe.
TOBACCO DOCK
The new venue is the 200 year old, grade-one listed Tobacco Dock, just two miles south of Shoreditch near Tower Bridge on the North side of the river.
We have 4x the floor space we had last time around, so expect the exhibition to be 4x bigger with more bikes, more art, more photography, more top-quality gear on sale, more food, more barrista coffee, more beer, plus the usual barbershop & tattoos.
Whether you’re an old school Ace Cafe Rocker on a Triton, an ex-sportbike rider with a modern-retro cafe racer or scrambler, or a cool 20-something doing their own thing with a Shed-built R80 Boxer Brat, this is a show about you and the culture surrounding the scene, but it’s an event for everyone interested in two wheels.
This page will grow over the next few weeks, with info on the builders, the bikes, the art, photography and film, plus details on the brands and retailers coming on board, and the high quality food and drink.
We’re selling the tickets in advance this year, so buy yours HERE. The price is £10 which includes VAT (sorry, but the taxman wants his share these days) including a free coat & helmet check, and there is limited free on-site motorcycle parking for advance ticket holders to get there early. We can fit at least 100 bikes on the dockside.
For the over-spill, and for cars, there is a public car park opposite the Tobacco Dock gates on Wapping Lane (thegreen square) which is just a £5 a day for cars, and we hope to do a Motorcycle rate deal on the weekend.
Loads more info soon, so bookmark this page and come back again. Meanwhile, here’s how last October’s eventwent down.
