WRC ;Les brèves du mercredi / Wednesday’s WRC notes: Finland

Au menu des brèves de Finlande, des sauts, des sauts et encore des sauts ! Mais aussi des sorties, des sorties et des tonneaux, des « very big boss » en piste, une femme sur le podium, Tomi qui enflamme l’après-rallye et Volkswagen qui met le feu au parc d’assistance !

Avec 41 mètres, le record de saut dans Päijälä revient à Mikko Hirvonen. Kris Meeke a sauté un peu moins loin, mais il a pris son envol à 151 km/h !

En parlant de vitesse, le Rallye de Finlande 2014 s’est gagné à 122,1 km/h de moyenne (record de 122,89 en 2012). Ce record était battu samedi soir, mais Surkee, Himos et Leustu ont fait chuter la moyenne samedi. Myhinpää (ES25) a été remportée par Ogier à 134,6 de moyenne.

L’affaire Toyota a fait les gorges chaudes des médias tout le week-end. La structure de Tommi Mäkinen avait préparé dans le plus grand secret une Toyota GT-86 4-roues motrices (sur base de Subaru R4). Le quadruple champion du monde a parcouru une partie de l’ES7 en compagnie du PDG de Toyota Motor, Akio Toyoda, grand passionné de sport automobile. Mais de là à en conclure que Mäkinen allait gérer le projet de Toyota en WRC… La Toyota Yaris, préparée par TMG, roule cette semaine près de Sanremo avec Stéphane Sarrazin… Le patron de TMG, Yoshiaki Kinoshita, était à Jyväskylä.

Souvent des copilotes souffrent d’atterrissages violents en Finlande, comme Timo Rautiainen, Denis Giraudet, ou encore Mikko Markkula. Cette année, c’est l’Irlandais Craig Breen qui s’est blessé au dos sur les jumps de Ruuhimäki (ES24). Le pilote Peugeot a dû abandonner et a passé une nuit en observation à l’hôpital. Sera-t-il remis pour le Barum Rally Zlin fin août ?

Tomi Tuominen, copilote de Juho Hänninen, est aussi chanteur. Son groupe « Fidel Bistro » a enflammé l’after-party du Rallye de Finlande !

Les commissaires techniques ont mis dehors deux voitures qui n’avaient pas effectué de tonneaux (la Citroën d’Ostberg et la Hyundai de Neuville, arceaux touchés) alors que deux autos ayant fait des « roulés-boulés » ont pu poursuivre leur route (la Hyundai d’Hänninen et la Citroën du jeune Sinunen). Sortie violemment dans l’ES3, la Ford de Nikara n’est pas allée plus loin. Idem pour la Fiesta R5 de Bertelli dans l’ES5.

Teenu Sinunen, 20 ans, avait gagné sa participation sur une Citroën DS3 R3 engagée par le AKK Sports Team Finland après avoir été sélectionné par un jury de spécialistes. Malgré un tonneau, le jeune espoir finlandais a remporté la catégorie WRC-3.

Au volant de sa Citroën C2 R équipée en Michelin, un autre Finlandais, Henri Haapamaki (25 ans), a remporté la catégorie RC4 devant toutes les Ford Fiesta R2 du Drive DMack Fiesta Trophy.

30 ans après la victoire de son père Ari, Max Vatanen a terminé 4^e du Fiesta Trophy derrière Sander Pärn, Quentin Gilbert et Yeray Lemes.

L’Australienne Molly Taylor (Citroën/Michelin) a terminé sur le podium du J-WRC derrière Martin Koci et Quentin Giordano. Depuis combien d’années une femme n’avait plus obtenu un tel résultat sur une série mondiale de rallye ? Peut-être depuis le retrait de la Coupe des Dames en WRC il y a bientôt 20 ans…

Dimanche matin, les pilotes Volkswagen ont été réveillés par une alarme incendie dans l’hôtel Sokos qui se trouve au milieu du parc d’assistance. L’origine du début d’incendie ? Luis Moya, ancien copilote et aujourd’hui consultant pour VW, avait oublié quelque chose dans le grille-pain…

Rally Finland’s post-event stories include tales of jumps, offs, rolls, big bosses, a lady on the podium, Tomi’s singing skills and Volkswagen’s fire scare!

The record leap on the ‘Päijälä’ stage was performed by Mikko Hirvonen. Kris Meeke’s jump was a little shorter but his take-off speed was 151kph!

The winner’s average speed in Finland was 122.1kph, just short of the record (122.89kph). The slower stages were ‘Surkee’, ‘Himos’ and ‘Leustu’, but Ogier completed ‘Myhinpää’ (SS25) at an average of 134.6kph.

There was big media interest in Toyota over the weekend. Tommi Mäkinen’s company has been secretly preparing a Subaru R4-based four-wheel drive Toyota GT-86 and the four-time world champion covered part of SS7 with Akio Toyoda as passenger. Toyota Motor’s number one is a big motorsport fan. Does this mean Mäkinen will run Toyota’s WRC programme? Meanwhile, the new TMG-prepared Toyota Yaris is running this weekend near Sanremo in the hands of Stéphane Sarrazin… TMG boss Yoshiaki Kinoshita was also in Jyväskylä.

Finland’s high-speed landings are renowned for being tough on drivers and co-drivers. Past victims have been Timo Rautiainen, Denis Giraudet and Mikko Markkula. This year, Irishman Craig Breen suffered a back injury over the jumps of ‘Ruuhimäki’ (SS24). It was enough to eliminate the Peugeot driver who spent a night under observation in hospital. Will he be fit for late-August’s Barum Rally Zlin (ERC)?

Juho Hänninen’s co-driver Tomi Tuominen is also the singer of the group Fidel Bistro which performed at Rally Finland’s post-event party!

The stewards prevented two cars from re-starting even though they hadn’t rolled: Ostberg’s Citroën and Neuville’s Hyundai were both declared to have suffered roll cage damage. Hänninen’s Hyundai and Sinunen’s Citroën rolled but were able to continue.

Teenu Sinunen, 20, won his ride in his AKK Sports Team Finland-entered Citroën DS3 R3 after been selected by a panel of rally specialists. Despite his roll, the youngster won the WRC-3 class.

Another young Finn, Henri Haapamaki, 25, won the RC4 class in a Michelin-equipped Citroën C2 R ahead of all the Ford Fiesta R2s competing in the Drive DMack Fiesta Trophy.

Thirty years after the landmark win of his dad Ari, Max Vatanen came fourth in the Fiesta Trophy standings behind Sander Pärn, Quentin Gilbert and Yeray Lemes.

Australia’s Molly Taylor (Citroën/Michelin) finished on the J-WRC podium behind Martin Koci and Quentin Giordano. How many years has it been since a lady last took part in podium celebrations? Perhaps not since the WRC’s Coupe des Dames was halted almost 20 years ago…

On Sunday morning, Volkswagen’s drivers were woken by a fire alarm in their hotel (Sokos) situated in the middle of the service park. The fire was due to former co-driver and VW consultant Luis Moya leaving something in the bread toaster…
