Sage quatrième lors d'une première étape rapide où il y avait plus à perdre qu'à gagner, Joan Barreda a mis la machine en marche lors de la première grosse spéciale du Dakar avec une large victoire. Sam Sunderland a vécu une cruelle désillusion en s'égarant (très) longuement à 70 km de l'arrivée. En autos, Nasser Al Attiyah a livré un récital pour s'imposer avec 8'30'' d'avance sur son plus proche rival. Une étape qui aura fait des dégâts à tous les niveaux.
Paulo Goncalves s'en tire lui de belle manière avec à nouveau une seconde place qui lui permet de consolider sa place de dauphin au général, avec tout de même six minutes de rendues sur Barreda. Troisième à neuf minutes, Ruben Faria réalise la performance du jour à neuf minutes du vainqueur au bout d'une étape très physique, seulement deux mois après une opération de la clavicule. Il devance de quatre secondes Jordi Viladoms alors que les débutants Toby Price et Matthias Walkner ont fait forte impression en prenant les 5e et 6e place sur la ligne d'arrivée.
Chez les quads, Rafal Sonik a réalisé une fin d'étape splendide pour distancer ses deux plus sérieux adversaires Ignacio Casale et Sergio Lafuente. Le Polonais, qui termine avec 3'33'' d'avance sur le vainqueur de la veille, en profite pour lui ravir les reines du classement général alors que Lafuente complète un trio de tête déjà dominateur lors de la première étape.
Pénalisé de deux minutes pour excès de vitesse hier soir, Nasser Al-Attiyah avait à cœur de montrer qu'il était bien le plus rapide en piste aujourd'hui lors d'une spéciale qui aura déjà permis d'importants écarts à l'arrivée. En lutte, comme lors de la première étape, avec son coéquipier Orlando Terranova, le Qatari s'impose finalement à la faveur d'une sortie de piste de l'Argentin dans les dix derniers kilomètres qui lui font perdre une vingtaine de minutes. Il colle surtout plus de huit minutes à son dauphin du jour et du classement général, Giniel de Villiers. Un deuxième Toyota Hilux vient se glisser dans le Top 3 du jour avec la belle performance du Hollandais Bernhard Ten Brinke qui participe à son troisième Dakar et occupe une inespérée troisième place provisoire.
Quatrième à San Juan comme hier à Villa Carlos Paz, Krzysztof Holowczyc conserve toutes ses chances de podium final alors que Carlos Sainz accuse lui déjà 26'50'' de retard sur la tête au volant de la Peugeot 2008. Stéphane Peterhansel a de son côté rejoint le bivouac avec une heure de plus qu'Al-Attiyah au compteur, tout comme Cyril Despres. Une journée également difficile pour Robby Gordon, victime d'ennuis mécaniques en début de spéciale, et pour l'infortuné Nani Roma, qui reste en course mais joues désormais à distance des places d'honneur.
En camion, Eduard Nikolaev a fait briller les couleurs de Kamaz après la déception de la première journée et devance de 46 secondes le Biélorusse Siarhei Viazovich. Un second Kamaz intègre le Top 3 du jour avec Airat Mardeev alors qu'Hans Stacey arrache une quatrième place qui lui permet de conserver son leadership au général pour 20 secondes. Andrey Karginov et Gerard de Rooy, dominateurs en 2014, perdent tous deux cinq minutes ce lundi.

In the car race, Nasser Al Attiyah put in dazzling performance to win 8'30'' ahead of his nearest rival. In fact, the stage wreaked havoc on plenty of levels.
Already a ten times stage winner on the Dakar, Joan Barreda has had to content himself so far with a 7th final position as his personal best, which can be qualified as a disappointment for the Spaniard who appears to be determined to do his utmost for victory in 2015. This goal is perfectly within his reach, since the Honda rider continued his collaboration with HRC with a victory on the second stage of the rally between Villa Carlos Paz and San Juan. Battling with Marc Coma and Sam Sunderland all along the 518-km special, Barreda finally benefited from his rivals' problems at the end of the stage. Coma suffered problems with his tyres and had to ease off the pace over the last 60 kilometres to make sure he reached the finish whilst yesterday's winner got lost for up to two hours whilst trying to find the right track and can more or less kiss goodbye to his ambitions in the general standings.
