WorldSBK : Record-breaker Rea fights off Davies for Imola Double

RACE 1 : Imperial performance by Rea who increases championship lead

Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) took his first win at Imola since 2015 with a dominant performance at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari di Imola, controlling the race from the start and not giving anyone on the track any opportunities. His teammate Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) completed the second consecutive KRT one-two of the season, with Marco Melandri (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) returning to the podium in third.

The Kawasaki riders shot out from the lights, quickly opening up distance with the riders behind. That gap would increase to 3-4 seconds between the British pair at the halfway point, with both riders leading the race from that point forwards. Rea is now just one win away from the all-time win record in MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship history, and opens up a 42-point lead at the top of the standings.

Sykes too gave no option to the rest of the field, showing that his Assen pace was no fluke and that, when he’s got room in front, his ZX-10RR’s pace is almost unparalleled. It will be interesting to see how the rider from Yorkshire fares starting from 8th in Race 2, given the issues that have plagued him in the past. He now moves up to fourth in the championship.

The first two laps were a nightmare for Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), looking for his fifth consecutive win here. Following his crash in the Superpole 2, the Welshman struggled at the lights, falling back from third to seventh. After climbing back to fourth, Davies went straight through the Variante Bassa chicane, losing several positions along the way and any chance of a victory. He later redeemed himself with two wonderful passes at that same turn 21, but by then the podium was out of sight, thanks to the fantastic rhythm shown by Marco Melandri (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) in front of his home fans. The Italian equaled his best WorldSBK result here in third, while Davies’ fourth will at least have the consolation prize of starting from P1 tomorrow.

Behind the two teams that have dominated proceedings throughout the weekend, Xavi Fores (Barni Racing Team) repeated his 2017 Race 1 finish with fifth place, finding the pace to hold off Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) in sixth. The Dutchman will however be pleased at his performance, after starting from the back of row 4.

Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Junior Team) had an extraordinary start to Race 1, moving up to third in lap one. He fell back as the race progressed, but his seventh-place finish equals his best result in WorldSBK. Just behind, Lorenzo Savadori (Milwaukee Aprilia) completed his best finish of the season in eighth.

Leon Haslam (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) finished a successful return to the WorldSBK paddock in ninth, pipping ahead at the line of fellow Brit Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team). Haslam beat his teammate for this weekend in Toprak Razgatlioglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing), whose WorldSBK Imola debut finished with him in eleventh.

Rea equals Carl Fogarty’s legendary win record in thrilling Race 2

Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) has won Race 2 at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari di Imola, equalling Carl Fogarty for the most wins in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship in the process. Victory number 59 came after a stunning battle with Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), who fought off several attacks from the reigning champion before having to settle for second place.

The battle had been anticipated all weekend, but it was Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) who made the early move, flying out from the blocks and taking the lead ahead of Davies. The Welshman kept close behind however, finally making his move at Variante Bassa at the end of lap 3. By then, Rea had made it up to third, and a few bends later, at Tosa, passed Rinaldi and set up the fight.

For nine laps, it was cat-and-mouse game, with barely a tenth of a second separating the two. For several laps, Rea stalked Davies, creeping up and planning his pass. He fired the first shot at Tamburello on lap 10, going wide and allowing Davies back through by the straight. Shot two came at Tosa two laps later, and it couldn’t have been closer. Rea found the pace he needed around Tosa, but Davies took the inside line. The pair touched, Rea went wide, and the Ducati stayed in front.

It was third time lucky for Rea, however, one lap later, at the entry to Variante Alta. From there on, the fired-up reigning champion put on an incredible display, giving Davies no chance to even answer back, and increasing the lead to four seconds by the checkered flag.

Behind the flying duo was Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK), completing an all-British duo for the first time this season. Sykes had a beautiful battle with Xavi Fores (Barni Racing Team) throughout the race, finally managing to make it past the Spaniard, who finished fourth, with three laps to go.

Before that, Marco Melandri (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) and Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team), who had been contending for that final podium place, came together on lap 10 around Rivazza. The pair collided and ended up on the gravel, neither man able to return.

Jordi Torres (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) scored his best result of the season with a scintillating fifth place finish, after starting on Row 4. One place behind him on the grid and finally at the flag, Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) came in sixth, equalling his best Imola result.

Rinaldi also equalled his Race 1 result in seventh. The Italian was unable to keep up his initial pace, but comes out of the Pata Italian Round with his best return over two races in WorldSBK. He beat Toprak Razgatlioglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) to the flag, also matching his best WorldSBK result.

In ninth, Eugene Laverty (Milwaukee Aprilia) made his return from injury a successful one. Leandro Mercado (Orelac Racing VerdNatura), closed the top ten, with one of his best performances of the season.

World SSP : Cluzel returns to top with electric Imola win

Distance between first and fifth down to 12 points after fantastic race 5

It took Jules Cluzel (NRT) a year and a half to find his way back to the top before Assen. For win number 2, it has taken just 21 days, as the French rider won his second consecutive race of the 2018 FIM Supersport World Championship season. The Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari di Imola witnessed a thrilling fifth race of the year, with Italian pair Federico Caricasulo (GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team) and Raffaele De Rosa (MV Agusta Reparto Corse by Vamag) in second and third.

Things got emotional early at Imola. Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing), who was third on the grid, decided at the last moment to not take part in what was supposed to be his final race. The WorldSSP legend climbed on his Kawasaki ZX-6R one last time, led the field one lap around the track, and headed into the pits. A final bow, on his terms, from an inimitable champion.

Of course, there was still a race left at Imola – and perhaps as a tribute to Kenan’s career, it was an electric, drama-filled affair. Right from the start, five riders shot out ahead, with Lucas Mahias (GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team) protecting his lead from Cluzel and Caricasulo. The reigning champion defended brilliantly until lap 6, when a slip at Rivazza left him tumbling down to 20th.

The now-front four led with blistering pace, tenths of a second amongst themselves but double figures with the rest. Caricasulo, fighting to hang on after a mistake in lap 7, managed to overtake Sandro Cortese (Kallio Racing) and De Rosa in the closing stages, but Cluzel proved to be just that inch too fast, racing ahead and meeting the checkered flag, with the Italian in second.

De Rosa managed to put his MV Agusta onto the podium for the second race in a row. The rider in red has grown into the championship, and adds another name to an already stacked front-end. Cortese, meanwhile, finished fourth, just 0.084 seconds off.

Behind the leading four, Randy Krummenacher (BARDAHL Evan Bros. WorldSSP Team) managed to climb through from 11th on the grid and becomes the new championship leader, on 81 points. Anthony West (EAB antwest Racing) made a triumphant return from injury with sixth place, while Mahias, in full-damage limitation mode, was beaten to seventh by Niki Tuuli (CIA Landlord Insurance Honda) by just one thousandth of a second. The Frenchman relinquishes his championship lead, but remains just two points behind Krummenacher. Most importantly, however, the distance between first and fifth is now down to just 12 points.

Completing the top ten, Luke Stapleford (Profile Racing) came in ninth, scoring valuable points to keep him in touching distance with the front riders, while Hikari Okubo (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) finished the race in tenth.

ES 1 : Gonneville sur Scie (114.45 Km)

ES 1 MODERNE : Cosson – Vaillant – Amourette : premier tiercé du jour

Leader de ce Championnat de France après les épreuves des Vins de Champagne et du Rallye de Lozère, Benoit Vaillant (DS3) aura bien du mal à récidiver sur les ES de ce Rallye Dieppe-Normandie. Dès ce 1^er chrono, les favoris l’ont fait souffrir à l’image du Dieppois Anthony Cosson (Porsche GT) ou bien encore du vainqueur de l’édition 2017 de ce Dieppe : Marc Amourette (208 T16), habitué de cette épreuve, ou bien encore du Champenois Alain Foulon (DS3 WRC) et du Caennais Stéphane Pustelnik (DS3 WRC). Les hostilités sont ouvertes d’autant que derrière ce groupe de favoris, il faudra suivre avec attention la « bataille » que vont se livrer les Skoda Fabia du groupe R5 pilotées par : Mickaël Faucher, Eddie Lemaitre et Eric Roussel qui pilotera la Skoda Fabia du vice-champion de France 2017 des Rallyes, le Nancéien : Quentin Giardano, vainqueur également du challenge Michelin de cette même année. De beaux duels en perspective.

ES 1 VHC :  Pluie fine au départ des VHC, chrono scratch pour Bayard

Onze équipages au départ et déjà un 1^er chrono scratch pour le pilote Nordiste Laurent Bayard (Porsche 911 2.8 RSR) qui devance de plus de 10’’ l’Opel Kadett de Stéphane Scellier, et la Peugeot 205 Gti pilotée par Franck Brocart. A signaler que la De Tomaso Pantera pilotée par Patrick Hautot a concédé 1’15’’.

ES 2 : Les Jacquemarts (14.60km)

ES 2 MODERNE : Le même trio que dans l’ES1, mais dans un ordre différent

Deuxième chrono du jour et deuxième temps scratch pour Anthony Cosson (Porche 997) qui semble avoir la « balle dans son camp » sur ce Dieppe 2018. Sur ce chrono des Jacquemarts, il devance Marc Amourette (208 T16) de 6’’ et Benoit Vaillant (DS/3 R5) de 7’’6. Stéphane Pustelnik (DS/3 WRC) et Yannick Roussel (Porsche 997 GT3 RS) complètent le quinté de tête. A noter, du côté des Skoda Fabia R5, la 1^ère place d’Eddie Lemaitre devant Mickaël Faucher et Eric Roussel

ES 2 VHC : Laurent Bayard récidiviste

Pour le pilote Nordiste Laurent Bayard (Porsche 911 2,8 RSR), les ES se suivent et se ressemblent avec un nouveau chrono scratch toujours devant Stéphane Scellier (Opel Kadett).En revanche, pour la 3^ème place, Pierrick Chauvel (911 SC) perd près de 40’’. Lors de ce 2^ème chrono, abandon de Patrick Hautot (De Tomaso Pantera) qui avait déjà connu des problèmes mécaniques en liaison.

ES 3 : Longueville/Scie Terroir de Caux (11.10Km)

ES 3 MODERNE : Une de plus pour Anthony Cosson

Pour l’instant, la stratégie mise en place par le Dieppois Anthony Cosson au volant de sa Porsche 997 marche comme sur des roulettes. Trois ES disputées et trois chronos scratch ayant tourné en la faveur du pilote de la Porsche 997. Un coup de maître qui pourrait être mis en échec par la classe et la verve d’un Marc Amourette (208 T16) qui semble plus motivé que jamais pour inscrire, comme l’an passé, son nom au palmarès de ce Rallye. En effet, à l’issue de ce chrono, il n’y a que moins de 12’’ en la faveur d’Anthony Cosson, qui est encore loin du retour au parc. A noter que les trois premières ES se sont déroulées sous la pluie et dans le froid.

ES 3 VHC :Petit problème pour Laurent Bayard

Même s’il a réalisé le chrono scratch de cette 3^ème ES chez les VH, Laurent Bayard (Porsche 911 2.8 RSR) n’était pas très satisfait à l’arrivée de ce chrono. Il expliquait « qu’il lui semblait que le moteur de sa Porsche 911 RSR ne tournait plus comme lors des deux premiers chronos ». Un avertissement sans frais puisque sur cette ES, il reprend encore 11’’ à Patrick Chauvel (Porsche 911 SC) et près de 26’’ à Franck Brocart qui poursuit sa remontée. De toute évidence, c’est à un duel entre les Porsche que l’on devrait assister sur ce Rallye. Derrière la Porsche de Bayard, Stéphane Scellier (Opel Kadett) ayant abandonné, cela laisse le champ libre aux deux Alpine A110 des Dieppois Wilhem Danczac et Bruno Evrard.

ES 4 : La Vienne (14.75Km)

ES 4 MODERNE :  Marc Amourette à l’attaque

Débordé en début de Rallye par la Porsche pilotée par Anthony Cosson, Marc Amourette est passé à l’offensive sur ce 4^ème chrono de la Vienne long de 14.75 Km. Sur cette ES, il termine avec 1’’6 d’avance sur Eddie Lemaitre (Skoda Fabia) et 3’’8 sur Benoit Vaillant (DS3). L’ex leader : Anthony Cosson (Porsche 997) concède près de 27’’ et termine 5^ème de l’ES juste derrière Stéphane Pustelnik (DS3 WRC).

ES 4 VHC : La Vienne (14.75 Km) : Première pour Franck Brocart

Depuis la 1^ère ES, Franck Brocart fait une remontée spectaculaire ! Sur ce chrono, il marque même de gros points en signant le chrono scratch, alors que derrière lui, Pierrick Chauvel et les deux Alpine A 110 de Wilhem Danczac et Bruno Evrard cèdent du terrain.

ES 5 : Gonneville sur Scie (11.45 Km)

ES 5 MODERNE :  Une bonne surprise pour Stéphane Pustelnik

Stéphane et Léa Pustelnick (DS3 WRC) voulaient au moins signer un chrono scratch sur ce Rallye de Dieppe. C’est chose faite à l’issue de ce 5^ème chrono où ils ont signé le temps scratch devant les deux « Maîtres » des lieux : Marc Amourette (208 T16) et Anthony Cosson (Porsche 997).

ES 5 VHC :  Abandon de Laurent Bayard

Sur les cinq chronos disputés, Laurent Bayard a signé trois chronos scratch et pris largement la tête d’un Rallye que tout le monde voyait déjà dans son escarcelle ! Mais une course n’est terminée que lorsque toutes les ES sont disputées et que le retour au parc fermé confirme le podium final. Ayant annoncé à la fin du chrono précédent qu’il était en passe de quitter le rallye, le pilote Nordiste Laurent Bayard l’a finalement fait, laissant sa place de leader au pilote de Charente-Maritime Pierrick Chauvel (Porsche 911 SC) qui n’en espérait pas autant. 

ES 6 : Les Jacquemaarts (14.60Km)

ES 6 MODERNE: Marc Amourette prend ses distances

Sixième chrono et nouveau chrono scratch (le second) pour Marc Amourette (208 T16) qui tente de faire la différence avec Anthony Cosson (Porsche 997) et Eddie Lemaitre (Skoda Fabia) qui revient sur la tête de course avec des chronos « canons ». Après cette ES, Cosson est à 32’’8 de Marc Amourette alors que Eddie Lemaitre (Skoda Fabia) est à moins d’une minute du leader. Benoit Vaillant (DS3) et Stéphane Pustelnick (DS3 WRC) sont toujours dans la course.

ES 6 VHC :Pierrick Chauvel persiste et signe

Depuis les abandons de Stéphane Scellier (Opel Kadett) et surtout de Laurent Bayard (Porsche 911 2.8 RSR), le pilote de Charente-Maritime licencié au SAO Pierrick Chauvel (Porsche 911 SC) et son co pilote, Stéphane Boucardeau sont dominateurs sur les ES de ce Dieppe-Normandie 2018. Un rallye qu’ils découvraient et qu’ils devraient remporter. Derrière eux, sur ce chrono, Franck Brocart (205 Gti) se joue des conditions météorologiques exécrables et terminent 2^ème de l’ES devant Bruno Evrard (Alpine A 110) qui fait honneur aux couleurs Dieppoises.

ES 7 : Longueville sur Scie Terroir de Caux (11.10 Km)

ES 7 MODERNE : Marc Amourette consolide sa place de leader

Plus que cinq chronos avant l’arrivée de cette édition 2018 du Rallye Dieppe-Normandie et déjà presque la victoire assurée pour Marc Amourette (208 T16) qui doit être très content que sa toute nouvelle auto fonctionne comme les DS3 et autres Citroën sortant des ateliers de la société Trajectoire Racing dont il est le propriétaire. Vainqueur de ce chrono devant Benoit Vaillant (DS3) et Anthony Cosson (Porsche 997) qui ont concédé respectivement 4’’ et 8’’ .

ES 7 VHC : Une ES pour Stéphane Siméon

Septième chrono et 1^er temps scratch pour Stéphane Siméon (R5 GT Turbo) qui remporte le groupe et la classe 0. Pierrick Chauvel (Porche 911 SC), second de cette ES, conserve sa 1^ère place devant Bruno Evrard (Alpine A 110) et certainement Stéphane Siméon (R5 GT Turbo) qui a devancé Franck Brocart (205 Gti).

ES 8 : La Vienne (14.75 Km)

ES 8 MODERNE : Marc Amourette persiste et signe

Plus que 4 ES avant le retour au parc et nouveau chrono scratch pour Marc Amourette (208 T16) qui devance un excellent Stéphane Pustelnik (DS3 WRC) qui prend de plus en plus de confiance au volant de cette auto. Sur ce chrono de 14.75 Km, Pustelnik concède tout de même près de 14’’ et Benoit Vaillant (DS3 R5) 15’7’’.

ES 8 VHC :  Franck Brocart à l’attaque

A trois ES du terme de ce rallye VH, Franck Brocart (205 Gti) est reparti à l’assaut du podium en signant un nouveau chrono scratch devant Bruno Evrard (Alpine A 110) et Stéphane Siméon (R5 GT Turbo) qui ne possède plus que quelques secondes d’avance pour le gain du podium.

ES 9 Gonneville/Scie et ES 10 Les Jacquemarts

ES 9 MODERNE : Cosson et Amourette se partagent les lauriers

A deux ES de la fin de ce Rallye Dieppe-Normandie 2018, deux pilotes se partagent l’honneur des chronos puisque Anthony Cosson (Porsche 997) remporte l’ES de Gonneville/Scie (ES 9), alors que Marc Amourette (Peugeot 208 T 16) fait de même sur le chrono des Jacquemarts. Un scratch qui conforte la victoire de Marc Amourette pour le gain du Rallye qu’il remporte devant le leader du Championnat : Benoit Vaillant (DS3 R5) qui ajoute là des points très précieux dans son escarcelle. Anthony Cosson (Porsche 997) prend la 3^ème place devant Stéphane Pustelnik (DS3 WRC), excellent 4^ème et Eddie Lemaitre (Skoda Fabia R5) qui a signé pratiquement l’intégralité des scratchs chez les propriétaires des Skoda Fabia : Mickaël Faucher et Eric Roussel.

ES 9 VHC : Gonneville sur Scie (11.45 Km) et ES 10 VHC : les Jacquemarts (14.6 Km) : La passe de deux pour Pierrick Chauvel (Porsche 911 SC)

Il ne restait plus que deux chronos à effectuer avant le retour sur le Parc fermé de Dieppe et ces deux chronos de la fin du Rallye ont été mis au crédit de Pierrick Chauvel (Porsche 911 SC) qui a dominé cette fin de rallye avec verve et talent. Derrière le pilote Charentais, le pilote de l’ASA local Bruno Evrard (Alpine A 110) monte sur la 2^ème marche du podium devant Stéphane Siméon (R5 GT Turbo) qui a bien résisté au retour de Franck Brocard. Un superbe podium auquel il faut ajouter les noms de Laurent Bayard (Porsche 2.8 RSR), dominateur lors des trois premiers chronos et celui de Bruno Scellier (Opel Kadett) qui ont abandonné sur des problèmes mécaniques tout comme le pilote local Wilhem Danczac (Alpine A 110).

ES 11 Longueville/Scie - ES 12 La Vienne

ES 11 Moderne : Anthony Cosson et Marc Amourette récidivistes

Deux derniers chronos et un retour à Dieppe au Parc avec deux vainqueurs différents dans les ES de Longueville/Scie Terroir de Caux et la Vienne qui concluaient cette édition 2018 du Rallye de Dieppe. Comme lors des deux ES précédentes, les vainqueurs sont les mêmes avec Anthony Cosson qui signe le chrono de Longueville et Marc Amourette celui de la Vienne. Grand vainqueur de cette édition 2018 du Rallye : Marc Amourette récidive après son succès en 2017. Pour le compte du Championnat de France de 2^ème division, la palme revient à Benoit Vaillant second de ce Rallye de Dieppe qui a maintenant une belle avance sur Eddie Lemaitre (Skoda Fabia R5) qui a perdu beaucoup de temps en effectuant une légère sortie dans le 11^ème chrono. Alain Foulon termine assez loin tout comme Mickaël Faucher (Skoda Fabia R5) 6^ème du scratch.
