sub zero. dubai, uae. first time for everything

We check in with Sub Zero in Dubai’s Al Quoz industrial region to find out how the region’s biggest performance workshop came to be. And what plans they have in the future.
In a region developing as fast as the United Arab Emirates, the race to be ‘the first’ of anything is a hotly contested one. And in that respect, performance specialist Sub Zeo (based in Dubai’s Al Quoz industrial zone) has got the legs on a number of its competitors. According to CEO Rashed Al Jabri, Sub Zero was the first performance workshop in the region to have a dyno installed, the first to extend to overseas markets, and the first to open an online store. Each a claim to Middle Eastern fame in its own right for Sub Zero. Strange then that the company’s origins are rooted nearly 10,000 kilometres away in Australia.
“When I was a bit younger,” Rashed explains, “I used to take my cars to different garages to see which was best. But I went from garage-to-garage and wasn’t very happy with any of them. They weren’t very professional and didn’t have any plans to change or improve.
“So I went to Australia” – as one does when spontaneity takes hold – “where I was searching for products and good people to work with me, which is when I met the guys at Sub Zero in Australia: Ivan and his two sons, Mick and Mario. So I gave them a good offer, explained how we could develop a strong business together, and not too long after that we came to Dubai. We opened Sub Zero here in 2006.”
As Rashed and I stand here in the Sub Zero customers stores, there’s a look in his eyes that, if vocalised, would say, ‘how times change’. He’s not wrong. From these ‘humble’ beginnings, Rashed had big plans for his regional workshop. Quite literally in fact.
“Sub Zero is the biggest performance workshop in the Middle East, and that’s because we wanted to focus on everything. The plan was to make one shop that does everything from A-Z. If you bring your car to the shop, you can have it fully modified here.
With a plan (albeit an ambitious one) in place, the first step was to make a deal with some of the worlds most reputable parts suppliers. Once again, international travel beckoned, and yet more of Rashed’s frequent flyer miles were put to good use. In America, Sub Zero reps visited every supplier they could, and it wasn’t too long before hands were shaken and names were signed on the dotted line. The team had their supplies and in vast quantities too to begin wholesale engine builds on a large scale. Then came the next step: the dyno.
“We were the first performance shop in the Middle East to have a dyno. At the time everyone was smiling: ‘why do you need that?’, and everything like this. But I was very happy with it. We were keen, as were our customers, to see how much performance a car can reach. After that we also got an engine dyno from Super Flo: only one other facility had one, and that belonged to the Dubai government.”
Again, all well in principle, but the stiff amount of competition – plus the uphill struggle of any newly established company finding their way in the market – proved difficult first hurdles to overcome. Step one involved Rashed’s own Land Cruiser, for which he and the team built a turbocharged engine from scratch. Chucking out more horsepower than anything of a similar size had a right to, it wasn’t long before local interest, especially on the drag strips, was tweaked. Little by little the customers started trickling in. Interestingly, more and more examples of the same model kept appearing on the books. A thought suddenly occurred.

Valentino Rossi pips top spot on day 2 testing at Jerez

    from Twowheelsblog
On the second day of official MotoGP testing at Jerez de la Frontera, most of the MotoGP riders decided to wait (and keep an eye the Formula 1 race) for the afternoon session to hit the track, after it began to dry out thanks to some wind and finally offering discreet surface conditions to test so lap times began to drop accordingly.
Valentino Rossi fans can pull out the yellow flags, as the Italian rider ended up the fastest rider of the day, taking over the top of the timesheets around 3:30pm from Dani Pedrosa with a best lap of 1’39”525 and the first rider to break the 1.40 barrier and was 0.007s faster than Lorenzo’s 2012 pole record.
While the two Sepang tests and the three-day outing at Austin seemed to show a certain superiority of the Honda machines, in the dry at Jerez, it was a Yamaha 1-2-3 with the reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo just 0.015s from his team mate and Cal Crutchlow in third just 0.049s and who lamented that he basically has only has the 2012 version of the M1.
Fourth fastest was Dani Pedrosa and he was just a tenth of second slower after a do-or-die lap and just before rain hit the Spanish circuit around 4pm and basically froze lap times.
Repsol Honda 2013 Jerez test day 1
Andrea Dovizioso took his Ducati to fifth and he was a little less than eight tenths from the top, but don’t ask us with which Ducati he did his lap time as each of the four Ducati rider has two different versions at their disposal. One has a different tank layout and one with a different weight distribution and has shark gills, and Dovizioso also had a new and lowerwindshield to test while test rider Michele Pirro continued with his two ‘laboratory’ Desmosedici’s.
Alvaro Bautista ended up sixth before suffering a crash at the Pons corner that caused the session to be red flagged and he suffered to micro fractures to the metacarpals his third and fourth fingers of his left hand, but apparently they will not rule him out of tomorrow’s final day of testing.
Marc Marquez must have had some serious problems today because he was seventh and almost 1.2 seconds off pace, and he was followed by Stefan Bradl who suffered his second crash in two days, while Pramac’s Andrea Iannone who finished ahead of Ducati factory rider Nicky Hayden, who closed out the top ten, and 1.1 seconds slower than his team mate Dovizioso.
The top CRT rider of the day was Hector Barbera in 11th and just 0.050s slower than Hayden and 0.022s faster than MotoGP rookie Bradley Smith.
Pramac’s Ben Spies did not have a good test day. He finished 18th overall and found himself not only behind Barbera but also four other CRT riders (Espargaro, Petrucci, Pirro and De Puniet) but also behind Ducati test rider Michele Pirro. Or Spies is still adjusting to the GP12 or 13 or whatever they are calling it or he is still suffering from shoulder problems.

Stefan Bradl unveils 2013 LCR Honda livery at Jerez

    LCR Honda 2013 team presentation
    from Twowheelsblog
With a lot less fanfare and attention that Yamaha’s team presentation at Jerez received by the press yesterday, LCR Honda also took the wraps their 2013 team livery during today’s test at the Spanish circuit, and we must say that the studio photos of Stefan Bradl and his Honda RC213V are absolutely stunning.
Lucio Cecchinello (Team Manager): “As happens to those people who love their chosen sport, at this point every year, I am excited and nervous as we approach the coming season. Joy and suspense, desire and expectations… these emotions are the ones that make me feel alive and pull me into the world of MotoGP. Together with Stefan, Honda HRC and all the Team, we have an important objective and we will go forward and accept this challenge. I am very happy to offer Stefan this opportunity as he deserves this as he is a talented rider and a fantastic person. We are also happy to continue our little contribution to the great show of MotoGP, to give the auto-motive companies a chance to progress their technology and last but not least, to develop the safety procedures for all the motorcyclists around the world”.
Stefan Bradl: “I am excited to be back after the winter break and more importantly, I am happy to be back with Lucio and his Team. Last year we had a very positive season and I felt that everybody gave their maximum support for me in my debut in MotoGP class. Firstly I must thank Honda HRC for believing in me and to thank them again for making the RCV as it is a real dream bike. The main target for me is to be on the podium this year, I think we have the potential to do that. For sure, the challenge is high and my rivals are very strong, but as soon as somebody in front makes a mistake we should be there to catch a podium”.
Bradl finished the first day of testing in ninth and 2.3 seconds off pace, but he also suffered a crash.

Fangio's iconic Mercedes race car found in warehouse - headed for auction

    1954 Mercedes W196 race car 22.3.2013

1954 Formula One World Championship winner

An iconic Mercedes W196 race car, which helped propel Juan Manuel Fangio to the 1954 Formula One World Championship, has been rediscovered after being 'lost' for decades.
The details are a little hazy, but the car was apparently owned by a mysterious European who kept it locked away in a warehouse for almost 20 years.

Described as "one of the most significant motor cars of the 20th century," the W196 features a 2.5-liter straight-eight engine as well as several key innovations including an independent suspension and a tubular space frame.
The car is reportedly in rough shape but it will be auctioned off at Bonhams' annual Goodwood Festival of Speed sale where it is expected to fetch more than £5 ($7.6 / €5.8) million.

Hamann heavily modifies a BMW M5

    BMW M5 by Hamann / Patrick3331

Tuning taken to a whole new level

Well known German tuning firm Hamannhas decided to give the BMW M5 (F10) a whole new identity which surely won't be appreciated by many people.
The tuner is no stranger to aftermarket kits for the M5 but unfortunately things keep getting worse. While the first onewas not bad at all, the Mi5Sion package showed in Geneva earlier this month left a lot to be desired. However, we might have to reconsider our opinion after seeing Hamann’s latest M5-based project.

This more extreme variant was displayed at the Auto Trader Live luxury car show in Dubai where it shocked the crowd with its in-depth customization. Just about everything on the outside has changed, including the double kidney grille, ventilated hood, double rear spoilers and diffuser. The cabin is a blend of Alcantara and leather in black, red and light blue colors.

It seems there is a market for such a car as Hamann plans to make 10 units, each priced at 235,000 USD.
