Dakar, Leg 7: Sainz claims another stage win / étape 7 : Seconde victoire de Sainz
Carlos Sainz (Buggy SMG) collected his second stage win since the start of the 2014 Dakar to beat a pack of chasing Mini ALL4 Racings led by Al-Attiyah, Roma and Peterhansel. The latter has moved up to second overall after a time penalty was handed to Orlando Terranova.

After Saturday’s rainy rest day in Salta, the bivouac’s dwellers woke up to muddy conditions to get the competition’s second week off to an interesting start. Salta is also the beginning of the line of the famous Train to the Clouds (Tren de la Nubes) which takes passengers through the Andes to the Chilean border at an altitude of more than 4,200 metres. The line features 29 bridges, 21 tunnels and 13 viaducts, and the two-way journey takes 17 hours.
Today’s 763km loop though the Salta region lasted only 4h43m28s for the stage’s winner Sainz whose second win of the event takes his score on the Dakar to a total of 27, placing him fourth in the record books, behind Vatanen (50), Peterhansel (30) and Ickx (29). “We went well,” he reported. The stage was very varied: narrow and twisty in places at the beginning, but then wider towards the end.”
High in the natural habitat of lamas and vicunas, the SMG Buggy driver succeeded in outpacing a train of no fewer than six Michelin-equipped Mini ALL4 Racings, their ranks led by Al-Attiyah (4m24s), ahead of team-mates Peterhansel, Roma, Holowczyc, Villagra and Vasilyev. In total, the day’s top 10 featured seven Minis, plus Giniel de Villiers (Toyota) and Bernhard Ten Brinke (Ford-HRX).
The leaderboard is still topped by Roma, but his closest threat is now Peterhansel who moved up a notch when Terranova took a 15-minute penalty for colliding with a biker. The Argentinean also dropped 18 minutes on the stage and has fallen back to fourth, behind South Africa’s Giniel de Villiers.
Monday’s journey will take car competitors across the Andes for the first Chilean stage of the 2014 Dakar 2014. The day begins with a 510km road section which climbs to almost 5,000 metres at the Paso de Jama, while the stage itself (302km) will finish near the mining town of Calama. Sainz will leave Salta at 5:15am, and the stage is due to start at 11:50am.

La spéciale était très variée avec des portions étroites et sinueuses au début, puis des pistes plus larges. »
Sur les grands espaces de l’altiplano andin, parmi lamas et vigognes, le Buggy SMG a devancé une horde de six Mini ALL4 Racing emmenée par Nasser Al-Attiyah.
Le Qatari a pris la 2e place du jour à 4min24s de Sainz, et précédé ses équipiers Peterhansel, Roma, Holowczyc, Villagra, Vasilyev. Huit Mini figurent dans le top-ten complété par Giniel de Villiers (Toyota), Terranova et Bernhard Ten Brinke (Ford-HRX).
Nani Roma est toujours leader du classement général devant Stéphane Peterhansel qui a progressé d’une place après une pénalité de 15 minutes infligée à Orlando Terranova ce matin pour avoir percuté un motard. L’Argentin, qui a également perdu 18 minutes aujourd’hui, a chuté à la 4e place du général derrière le Sud-Africain Giniel de Villiers.
Demain, les concurrents Autos vont traverser la Cordillère des Andes pour la 1ère étape chilienne de ce Dakar 2014. La spéciale débutera côté chilien après 510 km de liaison et un passage à près de 5000 mètres d’altitude via le Paso de Jama. La spéciale longue de 302 km s’achèvera aux portes de la cité minière de Calama. Carlos Sainz quittera le bivouac de Salta à 5h15 pour un départ en spéciale à 11h50.

Stage 7 of the 2014 Dakar between Salta, Argentina, and Uyuni, Bolivia, was won by Joan Barreda (Honda-Michelin) who has taken his score to three wins since last Sunday’s start. The Spaniard finished clear of the leader Marc Coma (KTM-Michelin) and Cyril Despres (Yamaha Factory Racing-Michelin), while Alain Duclos (Sherco-Michelin) dropped 19 minutes.

After yesterday’s welcome rest day, the 85 bikers still in the event kicked off the event’s second week by heading north into Bolivia for the first part of the event’s second ‘marathon’ stage. The high attrition rate seen so far (51.2%) is an eloquent reminder of just how tough the first half of the rally turned out to be, but the remaining stages – which visit the towering dunes of the Atacama Desert – are likely to be equally demanding.
The seventh stage between Salta and Uyuni was shortened by around 100km when poor weather at the start prevented safety helicopters from taking off. The test eventually started at the Bolivian border, at the originally-planned Check Point 3.
Running fourth on the road, Barreda was fastest over the twisty trail that cut a path through the magnificent landscapes of the Altiplano region. The Honda-Michelin rider reached the finish with a gap of 4m3s and 5m35s over Coma and Despres respectively. Juan Pedrero (+6m57s, Sherco-Michelin) was fourth to make it four different makes in the day’s top four once again. Poland’s Kuba Przygonski (KTM) was fifth.
The main victim of the stage was Alain Duclos who dropped 19m40s after heading in the wrong direction practically from the start. He has consequently been passed into third place by Jordi Viladoms (KTM-Michelin) who was 10th today.
Marc Coma is now 38m14s clear of Barreda in the overall standings, but third-placed Viladoms (+1h16m3s) is only 32 seconds clear of Duclos. Despres (+2h26m13s) has climbed to tenth.
The bikers will spend tonight in Uyuni but without being able to work on their bikes. La septième spéciale entre Salta et Uyuni a été amputée de cent kilomètres en raison des mauvaises conditions météorologiques au départ empêchant les hélicoptères assurant la sécurité des pilotes de décoller. Le départ a été finalement donné à la frontière bolivienne au Check Point 3 (CP) initial.
Parti quatrième, Joan Barreda s’est montré le plus rapide sur les pistes sinueuses dessinées dans un décor de rêve au cœur de la région de l’Altiplano. Le pilote Honda-Michelin rallie l’arrivée avec une avance respective de 4min03s et 5min35 sur Marc Coma et Cyril Despres. Juan Pedrero (Sherco-Michelin) termine quatrième à 6min57. Quatre marques différentes sont représentées une nouvelle fois aux quatre premières places. Le polonais Kuba Przygonski (KTM) complète le Top5.
Le grand perdant du jour est Alain Duclos. Le vainqueur de la sixième étape s’est trompé de direction dès les premiers kilomètres. Il concède 19min40s à Barreda et abandonne sa troisième place au général au profit de Jordi Viladoms (KTM-Michelin), dixième du jour.
Marc Coma dispose de 38min14 d’avance sur Barreda au classement général. Alain Duclos glisse à la quatrième place à seulement 32 secondes de Viladoms. Cyril Despres remonte à la dixième place mais compte 2h26min13s de retard.
Ce soir, les motards font escale à Uyuni au sein d’un bivouac dédié sans assistance. Demain, ils devront parcourir 701 kilomètres dont 462 km de parcours chronométré autour du plus grand lac salé mondial, le Salar d’Uyuni, pour rallier Calama (Chili) avec le même train de pneumatiques.

Dakar : Avantage Roma et De Rooy à mi-parcours
L’Espagnol Nani Roma (Mini/Michelin) et le Néerlandais Gerard de Rooy (Iveco/Michelin) sont leaders des catégories Autos et Camions avec une demi-heure d’avance sur leurs poursuivants immédiats. Si cette première partie de course fut particulièrement éprouvante, la seconde s’annonce elle aussi difficile dans le Désert de l’Atacama.
Le bivouac ombragé de Salta – ses vastes étendues d’herbe verte autour d’un petit lac artificiel, son immense salle des fêtes avec de « vrais » sanitaires, un « vrai » réfectoire climatisé -, est un havre de paix bienvenu pour la traditionnelle pause du rallye.
Après six étapes argentines, il reste exactement 70 des 140 autos parties de Rosario dimanche dernier. Un taux d’abandon de 50% à la journée de repos témoigne d’un Dakar 2014 bien corsé avant d’aborder le « gros morceau », l’Atacama et ses montagnes de sable.
La course Autos fut très animée avec quatre leaders différents à l’issue des quatre 1ères étapes : Carlo Sousa (Haval), Stéphane Peterhansel (Mini), Nani Roma (Mini) et Carlos Sainz (Buggy SMG) ont successivement remporté les spéciales et occupé la tête du classement général.
Nani Roma et Michel Périn ont fait le break dans la 5e étape, la plus terrible de ce rallye, entre Chilecito et San Miguel de Tucuman, sur des hors-pistes bosselés, sablonneux et sous une chaleur accablante, 45°C à l’ombre. Sainz, Al-Attiyah, Peterhansel, Terranova se sont égarés et/ou ensablés. Seul Giniel de Villiers (Toyota) en a profité pour combler une partie de son retard. A une demi-heure de Roma, l’Argentin Orlando Terranova (Mini), Stéphane Peterhansel et Giniel de Villiers se tiennent en 10 minutes. Le vainqueur 2014 est probablement dans ce groupe de quatre. Quelle sera la stratégie du team X-Raid qui compte trois pilotes dans ce tiercé de tête ?
Les anciens vainqueurs Al-Attiyah (Mini, 5e) et Sainz (6e) ont reçu une pénalité d’une heure (WayPoint manqué) qui les a relégués à plus d’une heure du leader. Les trois Polonais, Marek Dabrowski (Toyota, 7e), Krszystof Holowczyc (Mini, 8e) et Adam Malysz (Toyota, 9e) et l’ancien champion d’Endurance moto Christian Lavieille (Haval, 10e) complètent le top-ten, au-delà duquel on trouve l’ancien pilote WRC Federico Villagra (Mini, 11e), l’ancien pilote de rallye Pascal Thomasse (Buggy MD, 12e) et le 1er pilote du Team Astana Aidyn Rakhimbayev (Toyota, 13e). Le Chilien Boris Garafulic (Mini) est 14e avant d’arriver au Chili, devant le Brésilien Guilherme Spinelli (Mitsubishi, 15e) qui s’était « noyé » dans un rio en crue près de Salta l’an passé.
Le Polonais Martin Kaczmarski (Mini, 16e) devant le 1er pilote du team Riwald décimé, Erik Van Loon (Ford-HRX, 17e), et le Russe Vladimir Vasiliev (Mini, 18e). L’étonnant argentin Emiliano Spataro est 19e sur son Renault-Duster devant le Sud-Africain Thomas Rundle, 20e sur l’ancien Toyota de De Villiers. L’Américain Robby Gordon est 21e à 5h52min19s sur son Hummer victime de « vapor-lock » en début de course, devant le leader de la catégorie T2, Jun Mitsuhashi (Toyota Land Cruiser). Brillant en début de rallye, l’équipier de De Villiers, Leeroy Poulter (Toyota) est 29e à la journée de repos. Pour son 1er Dakar, le double vainqueur de la Baja 1000, BJ Baldwin, est 39e sur son prototype Chevrolet. Première expérience au Dakar difficile pour les Ford Ranger officiels : Chris Visser a abandonné et Lucio Alvarez est 45e à 12h47min28s. Abandon aussi de Guerlain Chicherit (proto Chevrolet).
Chez les Camions, la course est très serrée comme en témoigne le classement de l’étape 6 (156 km) où les neuf 1ers camions ont terminé en moins de 5 minutes ! Gerard de Rooy (Iveco, 2 victoires d’étape) résiste aux Kamaz russes d’Andrey Karginov, (+29min05s), d’Eduard Nikolaev (+1h07min42s) et de Dmitry Sotnikov (1h22min35s). Son équipier Hans Stacey (Iveco, +1h34min44s) est en couverture à la 5e place du général, devant le Tchèque Ales Loprais (Tatra, +1h39min53s) et un autre Iveco de l’équipe de Rooy piloté par l’Espagnol Villa Roca (+1h51min34s). La seconde partie de Dakar s’annonce passionnante dans cette catégorie où le 1er leader, Ayrat Mardeev (Kamaz) a dû abandonner après une sortie de piste.

LA CORONA’S SR250
We’ve been big fans of La Corona from the early days of the Bike Shed, so it’s nice to see Diego, Jonas and Roger turning their attention to the quarter-litre Yamaha SR250, a bike that was always popular for shed builders, but is now on the ascendant with the pros too, with some stunning custom city-bikes cropping up all over. This bike was commissioned to be a durable, reliable, urban ride for every day use on the streets of Barcelona, where the guys are based, along with new owner Pepe, who wanted to add another bike to his growing collection.
To get the best out of the Yamaha SR you simply need to shed unnecessary weight and clutter, focus on getting good clean lines, and upgrade any parts that are a little bit ‘budget’. The tank shape, running gear, and general stance of the bike is already on the money for a modest, practical, custom build. The tank was stripped back, polished and clear-coated, while the OEM exhaust was given a titanium finish to complement the raw metal of the tank, and the finish of the upgraded handlebar. A tasteful gold coloured La Corona metal badge has been riveted to the tank.
The engine block has been painted matte black leaving the polished sidecovers to stand out, adding even more metal to the bike’s overall finish. While there wasn’t any engine tuning the air filter has been ditched in favour of modified cone style filters, which improves airflow, sound, and cleans up the subframe nicely, especially after the battery was re-mounted in a bespoke steel battery cage.
Although the bike is an everyday ride the client wanted a real leather seat (not that it rains much in Barcelona) so a slimline brown seat was slotted into the chopped and looped rear subframe, upholstered with tasteful diamond stitching. Grips are Beston – matched in the same brown as the seat, and the bike has a simple mini-speedo placed beside the ignition key to clean up the instrumentation. The rear fender was one the guys had lying around in the shop which they guys think comes from a Kz400, and a slimline rear tail/stop lamp has been tucked under the small flare at the tip.
The OEM wire spoked wheels have been painted black and shod in a pair of infamous Firestone De Luxes, which we can’t help but love, whether they work or not, and whether they’re a cliche or not, they just look right. If you wanna turn hard, just man-up and push harder on the bars.

2014 Volkswagen Polo WRC revealed with minor changes
Features an upgraded engine and optimized chassis components
Volkswagen has unveiled the 2014 Polo R WRC, ahead of its debut at the Rally Monte Carlo on January 14th.
Looking instantly recognizable, the car has an updated livery with familiar grey and blue stripes.
Volkswagen on coy on additional changes but they confirmed the car was equipped with an upgraded engine and optimized chassis components. Engineers also improved the stability of the car and installed new software for the on-board electronics.
According to Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito, "When it comes to technical development, you simply cannot afford to let up for a single second. Although we won some laurels in 2013, we have certainly not rested on them."
