The 2013 Fafe Rally Sprint was won by Spaniard Dani Sordo who claimed his first victory in the Citroën DS3 WRC/Michelin. The Vodafone Rally de Portugal’s ‘prologue’ attracted 100,000 spectators.
L’Espagnol Dani Sordo a remporté sa première victoire au volant de la Citroën DS3 WRC/Michelin en s’imposant au Fafe Rally Sprint, sorte de « prologue » du Vodafone Rally de Portugal, disputé devant 100 000 fans.
The Fafe Rally Sprint was based on the Rally de Portugal’s former classic stage of the same name, including the famous ‘Fafe’ jump, to the northeast of Porto. An estimated 100,000 spectators turn out for the day.
In the WRC class, either one or two drivers could be entered in the same car. Those competing alone tackled the 6.34km test twice, while those doubling up contested it once each. The fastest competitors went on to take part in the final run.
Dani Sordo’s first attempt produced a time of 3m44.1s which qualified the Citroën DS3 WRC he was sharing with Mikko Hirvonen for the final. Qatar M-Sport’s Mads Ostberg and Nasser Al-Attiyah also reached the final, along with Martin Prokop (Ford Fiesta RS WRC), Andreas Mikkelsen (Polo R WRC) and Robert Kubica (Citroën DS3 RRC).
The overall win was secured by Dani Sordo (3m39.3s) who ended up one second clear of Mads Ostberg. The Czech Republic’s Martin Prokop finished on the podium, ahead of Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen only representative after Seb Ogier’s withdrawal) and Robert Kubica who was making his gravel debut. The fastest Portuguese runner was Pedro Meireles (Skoda Fabia S2000), ahead of Ricardo Moura (Mitsubishi Evo IX) and Adruzilio Lopes (Subara).
The majority of the competitors will now turn their attention to the 2013 Rally de Portugal, the programme of which begins with recce on Tuesday morning.
Last weekend also saw co-driver Denis Giraudet return to active competition, eight months after sustaining a back injury in Finland. The French veteran won France’s Rallye Grasse-Alpin in a Porsche 997 GT3 RS alongside the 2010 Le Mans 24 Hours winner 2010 Romain Dumas.
Organisé au nord-est de Porto sur une partie d’une ancienne spéciale mythique du Rallye du Portugal, le Fafe Rally Sprint a une nouvelle fois attiré quelque 100 000 spectateurs massés autour du célèbre « jump » de Fafe.
En WRC, un ou deux équipages étaient engagés par voiture. Les « solos » pouvaient effectuer deux passages d’une spéciale longue de 6,34 km. Les « duos » devaient effectuer un tour chacun. Les meilleurs chronos étaient qualificatifs pour le 3e et dernier passage, la finale.
Auteur du meilleur temps lors du 1er tour en 3min44s1, Dani Sordo s’est retrouvé qualifié en finale sur la Citroën DS3 WRC qu’il partageait avec Mikko Hirvonen. Côté Qatar M-Sport, c’est Mads Ostberg et Nasser Al-Attiyah qui sont passés en finale, de même que Martin Prokop (Ford Fiesta RS WRC), Andreas Mikkelsen (Polo R WRC) et Robert Kubica (Citroën DS3 RRC).
En 3min39s3, la victoire est revenue à Dani Sordo, une seconde devant Mads Ostberg. Le Tchèque Martin Prokop a complété le podium devant Andreas Mikkelsen, unique représentant de Volkswagen après le forfait de Seb Ogier, et Robert Kubica qui débutait sur la terre. Pedro Meireles (Skoda Fabia S2000) a devancé Ricardo Moura (Mitsubishi Evo IX) et Adruzilio Lopes (Subara) dans le match des pilotes portugais.
Pendant ce temps, Denis Giraudet était de retour dans un baquet de rallye, huit mois après sa blessure en Finlande, aux côtés du vainqueur des 24 Heures du Mans 2010 Romain Dumas sur une Porsche 997 GT3 RS. Les deux hommes ont remporté le Rallye Grasse-Alpin.
La plupart des concurrents du Fafe Rally Sprint vont désormais se concentrer sur le Vodafone Rally de Portugal dont les reconnaissances débuteront mardi matin.
