Katsuyuki Nakasuga beat the record he set in 2012 to put YART-Michelin on pole at Suzuka for the second year in a row. The N°7 Yamaha finished clear of the N°12 Suzuki (Yoshimura Suzuki Racing Team) and the N°634 Honda (Musashi RT Harc-Pro).
En améliorant son propre record de l’an passé, Katsuyuki Nakasuga propulse pour la seconde année consécutive le YART-Michelin en pole position de la 36ème édition des 8 Heures de Suzuka. La Yamaha n°7 devance la Suzuki n°12 du Yoshimura Suzuki Racing Team et la Honda n°634 du Musashi RT Harc-Pro.
Poor weather prompted the organisers to replace the initially-planned superpole shootout with a conventional 40-minute qualifying session which was spared by the rain.
Ten minutes into the run, Katsuyuki Nakasuga posted a 2m6.817s, which improved on the record he established in 2012 by 0.028s. The Japanese teams did their best to beat the YART rider’s effort, but Yoshimura Suzuki Racing Team’s second-placed Tsuda (2m6.960s) fell 0.143s short of the pole winner. Nakasuga and Tsuda were the only riders to get beneath the 2m7s mark.
The impressive Michael Van Der Mark (2m7.260s) earned third on the grid for Musashi RT Harc-Pro which is still seen as favourite for Sunday’s race.
The 2011- and 2012-winning FCC TSR Honda team was fourth (2m7.302s), marginally clear of BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent (Michelin) whose Erwan Nigon completed the 5.807km circuit in 2m7.368s, a personal improvement of 1.5s.
Kagayama will start from sixth on the grid ahead of the defending world champion SERT. Honda Team Asia, TOHO Racing with MORIWAKI and GMT 94 (Michelin) rounded off the top 10.
Michelin was delighted with the afternoon’s performance which provided a further illustration of the competitiveness of its tyres in qualifying on the home turf of the French firm’s principal rival, Bridgestone.

Suite à de mauvaises conditions météorologiques, la Superpole a été annulée et remplacée par une séance classique d’essais qualificatifs de 40 minutes épargnée par la pluie.
Dix minutes après le début de la session, Katsuyuki Nakasuga claque un tour en 2.06.817 soit 0,028 seconde de mieux que son propre record établi en 2012. Les teams japonais vont alors tenter d’améliorer mais en vain. Tsuda (Yoshimura Suzuki Racing Team) échoue à la deuxième place à 0,143 seconde du poleman en bouclant son meilleur tour en 2.06.960. Nakasuga et Tsuda sont les deux seuls pilotes à avoir roulé sous la barre de 2.07.
Grâce à l’impressionnant Michael Van Der Mark, Musashi RT Harc-Pro prend la troisième place sur la grille de départ (2.07.260) et assume son statut de favori.
Double vainqueur en 2012 et 2011, FCC TSR Honda signe le quatrième temps en 2.07.302 juste devant BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent (Michelin) où Erwan Nigon a bouclé les 5,807 km en 2.07.368 soit une amélioration de 1,5 seconde par rapport à sa meilleure prestation.
Kagayama s’élancera de la sixième place devant les champions du monde en titre, le SERT. Honda Team Asia, TOHO Racing with MORIWAKI et GMT 94 (Michelin) complètent le Top 10.
Du côté de Michelin, on est ravi de cette performance où l’on a démontré une nouvelle fois la compétitivité des pneumatiques en qualifications face à une redoutable concurrence dans le jardin du principal rival du manufacturier français, Bridgestone.
