After April’s Bol d’Or, the 2013 Endurance World Championship (EWC) moves on to Japan for this weekend’s 8 Hours of Suzuka. Nine EWC-registered teams have made the journey to join battle with the local specialists.

The second round of the season at Suzuka is one of motorcycle racing’s classics where the Japanese bike makers traditionally attempt to boost their chances by recruiting some of the sport’s top stars.
With two victories to its name, FCC TSR Honda once again stands out as favourite and has enlisted the services of Jonathan Rea, currently seventh in the World Superbike Championship, to ride with four-time winner Ryuichi Kiyonari.
This time, however, FCC TSR Honda faces even stiffer competition than usual.
Its main opponent promises to be Yoshimura Suzuki Racing Team, winner of the eight-hour fixture four times (1978, 1980, 2007 and 2009). It also posted the fastest lap at the pre-race test earlier this month. Takuya Tsuda, Nobuatsu Aoki and Australia’s Joshua Brookes will be out to claim the team’s fifth win.
MuSASHi RT HARC-PRO will be eager to repeat its victory of 2010. Its N°634 Honda will be in the hands of Leon Haslan and the talented young Michael van der Mark. Team Kagayama (Suzuki), represented by Kagayama, Schwantz and Haga, will be another team to watch in the scrap for podium honours.
YART-Michelin, who started from pole position this time last year after establishing a new lap record in qualifying, will be counting on Katsuyuki Nakasuga, Josh Waters and Broc Parkes to earn Yamaha’s fifth Suzuka success.
After collecting a surprise third place in 2012, GMT 94-Michelin (Checa/Lagrive/Foray) will be targeting another top-three finish, while BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent-Michelin (4th in 2011) has a new trio of riders for this year’s race, namely Erwan Nigon, Damian Cudlin and Jason Pridmore, stand-in for Sylvain Barrier. With three rounds remaining (Suzuka, Oschersleben and Le Mans), the BMW outfit will be looking for big points to keep its title chances alive after being eliminated from the Bol d’Or by a fall.
Other top EWC teams to have made the trip to Japan are SERT (Philippe/Delhalle/DaCosta), Honda TT Legends (Andrews/Rutter/McGuinness), Bolliger Team Switzerland, R2CL, Flembbo Leader Team and Motobox Kremer by Shell Advance-Michelin.

Vainqueur en 2010, MuSASHi RT HARC-PRO Honda compte bien renouer avec la victoire. La Honda n° 634 sera confiée à Leon Haslan et au jeune talentueux Michael van der Mark. Le Team Kagayama (Suzuki) composé de Kagayama, Schwantz et Haga sera également à surveiller pour la première marche du podium.
Auteur de pole position en signant un nouveau record du tour en 2012, le YART-Michelin emmené par Katsuyuki Nakasuga, Josh Waters et Broc Parkes compte bien tirer son épingle du jeu et offrir à Yamaha une cinquième victoire.
Surprenant troisième en 2012, le GMT 94-Michelin (Checa/Lagrive/Foray) souhaite rééditer sa performance en visant une place sur le podium. BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent-Michelin, quatrième en 2011, a renouvelé son équipage en rappelant Erwan Nigon et Damian Cudlin, épaulés par Jason Pridmore, remplaçant de Sylvain Barrier. Contraint à l’abandon sur chute au Bol d’Or, l’équipe de Michael Bartholémy devra marquer de précieux points pour rester dans la course au titre avant d’aborder les deux dernières épreuves de la saison, les 8 Heures d’Oschersleben et les 24 Heures Moto.
Le SERT (Philippe/Delhalle/DaCosta), Honda TT Legends (Andrews/Rutter/McGuinness), Bolliger Team Switzerland, le Team R2CL, Flembbo Leader Team et Motobox Kremer by Shell Advance-Michelin seront également au départ de la 36ème édition des 8 Heures de Suzuka.
