The number of drivers Monster Energy X-Raid has entered for this year’s Dakar is enough to form a soccer team! Three former winners – Peterhansel (N°300), Al-Attiyah (N°301) and Roma (N°304) – are competing in Michelin-equipped Mini ALL4 Racings.
C’est carrément une équipe de football que le team Monster Energy X-Raid engage au Rallye Dakar 2014 avec pas moins de onze Mini All-4 Racing/Michelin, dont trois pour d’anciens vainqueurs, Peterhansel, Al-Attiyah et Roma.
Eleven-time Dakar winner Stéphane Peterhansel (six wins on two wheels, five on four) is looking to equal the record of three straight car victories currently held by Ari Vatanen and Jean-Pierre Lartigue. This is the Frenchman’s 25th Dakar and, in addition to having the quick-thinking Jean-Paul Cottret alongside, he has plenty of experience of the Mini.
His chief rival Nasser Al-Attiyah has also switched to X-Raid after winning the Dakar with Volkswagen in 2011 and a one-off attempt in a buggy in 2013. The Qatari and his co-driver, Spain’s Lucas Cruz, recently tested the Mini in Germany.
The 2004 ‘bikes’ winner Nani Roma will share his Mini ALL4 Racing with Michel Périn. The Spaniard won four stages in 2013 but finished shy of the podium behind team-mate Leonid Novitskiy who is not competing this year.
The 2014 X-Raid line-up also stars Poland’s Krzysztof Holowczyc (N°309), who was eliminated by an injury last year, and rising star Martin Kaczmarski (N°332), 23, who is contesting the event for the second time.
The German team also includes three Argentine drivers. Orlando Terranova (N°307) – who won a stage in 2013 in a BMW X3CC – is making his debut in a Mini ALL4 Racing and stands out as a potential winner. The ex-WRC driver and multiple Argentine champion Federico Villagra (N°330) drove a Mini for the first time on the recent Rallye du Maroc, while Adrian Yacopini (N°334) is competing in X-Raid’s colours, but in a BMW X3CC.
For the first time, X-Raid’s squad includes a Chinese driver, namely Zhou Yong (N°319). Like the Chinaman, Germany’s Stefan Schott (N°337) is competing for the seventh time. This is the third attempt of Chilean Boris Garafulic (N°317) in a Mini ALL4 Racing, while the reigning Russian off-road champion Dimitri Vassilyev (N°314) came second in Morocco and on the Silk Way Rally in a Mini ALL4 Racing/Michelin.
The new technical regulations (production engines) introduced in 2013 has had little effect on the potency of the Mini ALL4 Racings which are still powered by a three-litre, 307hp, bi-turbo diesel engine mated to a Sadev sequential gearbox and X-Trac all-wheel drive transmission.
Lauréat des deux dernières éditions et déjà onze fois vainqueur du Dakar (six à moto et cinq en auto), Stéphane Peterhansel (n°300) va tenter d’égaler le record de trois victoires d’affilée Auto codétenu par Ari Vatanen et Jean-Pierre Lartigue. Toujours navigué par le rusé Jean-Paul Cottret, « Peter » prendra le départ de son 25e Dakar au volant d’une Mini ALL4 Racing qu’il connaît par cœur.
Il aura pour équipier son principal adversaire, le Qatari Nasser Al-Attiyah (n°301), qui rejoint finalement X-Raid après avoir gagné avec Volkswagen en 2011 et tenté l’aventure sur un Buggy de sa propre équipe l’an passé. Nasser a récemment découvert la Mini lors d’une séance d’essais en Allemagne. Il sera copiloté par l’Espagnol Lucas Cruz.
L’Espagnol Nani Roma (n°304, vainqueur à moto en 2004) rempile également sur une Mini ALL4 Racing avec Michel Périn à ses côtés. Meilleur performer de l’édition 2013 avec quatre victoires d’étape, Nani avait échoué au pied du podium derrière son équipier Leonid Novitskiy qui ne sera pas au départ à Rosario en janvier prochain.
L’équipe X-Raid 2014 compte également dans ses rangs les Polonais Krzysztof Holowczyc ‘n°309), contraint à l’abandon sur blessure l’an passé, et le jeune Martin Kaczmarski (n°332, 23 ans), valeur montante du Rallye Tout-Terrain qui va découvrir le Dakar cette année.
Trois Argentins font également partie du team allemand. Orlando Terranova (n°307), vainqueur d’une étape en 2013 sur un BMW X3CC, pilotera pour la 1ère fois une Mini ALL4 Racing et pourrait se mêler à la lutte pour la victoire. L’ancien pilote WRC et multiple champion argentin de rallye Federico Villagra (n°330) s’est fait remarquer au dernier Rallye du Maroc pour ses débuts sur la Mini. Adrian Yacopini (n°334) disposera quant à lui d’un BMW X3CC engagé par X-Raid.
L’équipe X-Raid accueille pour la 1ère fois un pilote chinois, Zhou Yong (n°319), qui a déjà participé six fois au Dakar, tout comme l’Allemand Stefan Schott (n°337). Le Chilien Boris Garafulic (n°317) disputera son 3e Dakar sur une Mini ALL4 Racing et Dimitri Vassilyev (n°314), champion de Russie Off-Road en titre, a terminé 2e du dernier Rallye du Maroc et du Silk Way Rally sur une Mini ALL4 Racing/Michelin.
La nouvelle réglementation technique (moteurs de série) entrée en vigueur l’an passé n’avait guère eu d’effets sur la performance de la Mini ALL4 Racing, toujours propulsée son moteur 3-Litres bi-turbo diesel de 307 ch associé à une boîte séquentielle Sadev et à une transmission X-Trac à 4-roues motrices. Cette année encore, ce sera la machine à battre sur le Dakar.
