Cyril Despres (Yamaha Factory Racing-Michelin) secured his first stage victory of the 2014 Dakar in Calama, Chile, today. Last year’s outright winner beat Joan Barreda (Honda-Michelin) and Marc Coma (KTM-Michelin).

The second part of the event’s second marathon stage (462km) took riders round the Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat, via a route made up of dirt tracks and rocky trails.
Frenchman Cyril Despres began the morning in third position on the road and was fastest up to the first Check Point at Km140. The five-time Dakar, who is currently more than two hours behind Coma in the provisional standings, then enjoyed a trouble-free run to claim his and Yamaha’s first stage success of this year’s event. Barreda, who was first on the road, came second today (+2m10s,) chased by third-placed Marc Coma who was a further six seconds adrift.
Helder Rodrigues (Honda) was quick at the beginning of the test before collecting fourth place (+6m44s), while Olivier Pain (Yamaha Factory Racing-Michelin) figured in the top five once again, 10m46s behind his team-mate.
Despres’ support rider Mickael Metge (Yamaha Factory Racing-Michelin) was sixth (+13m4s), ahead of South African Riaan Van Nierkerk (+13m21s) who was another runner to go well early on.
Duclos (Sherco-Michelin) was halted several times by mechanical trouble. He reportedly stopped a first time for 15 minutes at Km51 and eventually dropped 34 minutes to the day’s winner. He is still fourth overall, however, although his chances of a top-three finish have taken a blow, since he is now 22 minutes off third spot.
Indeed, the top three hasn’t changed and is still monopolised by Spaniards, led by Coma who is 38m8s clear of Barreda. Viladoms (KTM-Michelin), who was eighth on SS8, is 1h27m27s behind Coma, while Despres’ win has promoted him to ninth spot (+2h23m57s).
Tuesday will see competitors head towards the Pacific Ocean via another tough day (459km in total, and 422km of stage action). The early part is said to be pretty rough before riders hit the Atacama Desert’s infamous huge dunes and the steep two-kilometre descent to the finish in Iquique.
La seconde partie de la deuxième étape marathon, longue de 462 kilomètres, était dessinée autour du Salar d’Uyuni, plus grand lac salé au monde, empruntant des portions de terre et des pistes caillouteuses.
S’élançant de la troisième position ce matin, Cyril Despres pointait en tête au premier Check Point (CP) au kilomètre 140. Le français, quintuple vainqueur de l’épreuve, relégué au général à plus de deux heures du leader Coma, a ensuite parfaitement géré le reste de la spéciale. Il enlève sa première victoire et offre à Yamaha son premier succès sur le Dakar 2014. Ouvrant la piste ce matin, Joan Barreda, termine deuxième à 2min10s. Marc Coma échoue à la troisième place pour seulement six secondes.
Helder Rodrigues (Honda), menant les premiers kilomètres de la spéciale, se classe quatrième à 6min44. Olivier Pain (Yamaha Factory Racing – Michelin) termine une nouvelle fois dans le Top 5 à 10min46s de son coéquipier.
Le porteur d’eau de Despres, Mickael Metge (Yamaha Factory Racing – Michelin) rallie l’arrivée en sixième position (+13min04s) devant le Sud-Africain Riaan Van Nierkerk, auteur d’un bon début de spéciale (+13min21).
Alain Duclos (Sherco-Michelin) a rencontré des ennuis mécaniques à plusieurs reprises. Il est signalé arrêté dans un premier temps au kilomètre 51 puis repart au bout de 15 minutes. Il concède 34 minutes à l’arrivée mais conserve la quatrième place au général. Toutefois, le podium s’éloigne un eu plus, 22 minutes le séparent de la troisième marche.
Statut-quo au niveau du podium provisoire où trois espagnols occupent les premières places. Marc Coma dispose de 38min08s d’avance sur Barreda. Viladoms (KTM-Michelin), huitième du jour, compte 1h27min27s de retard. Grâce sa victoire, Cyril Despres grimpe d’une place et s’empare de la neuvième position à 2h23min57s.
Demain les concurrents mettront le cap sur le Pacifique avec une neuvième étape copieuse (459 km dont 422 de spéciale). Après une première partie de spéciale plutôt cassante, ils affronteront les immenses dunes du désert de l’Atacama et se jetteront dans une descente vertigineuse de deux kilomètres pour rallier l’arrivée à Iquique.
