WRC, Italie : 20e victoire mondiale pour Ogier (VW/Michelin) / 20th WRC win for Ogier

Sébastien Ogier et Julien Ingrassia ont remporté leur 20e victoire en Championnat du monde des Rallyes FIA à l’issue du Rally Italia-Sardegna, sixième manche 2014. Mads Ostberg (Citroën, 2e, +1min21s3) a résisté à Jari-Matti Latvala (VW, 3e, +1min32s8), leader du rallye de l’ES5 à l’ES13.

En remportant sa 20^e victoire en WRC, Sébastien Ogier dépasse Markku Alèn et rejoint son compatriote Didier Auriol, Champion du monde 1994, au palmarès mondial. Il offre également une 10^e victoire consécutive à Volkswagen Motorsport (nouveau record).

La chaleur (+50°C dans les habitacles), la poussière, des passages de fesh-fesh, de profondes ornières ou encore des portions de pierres enchâssées, ont rendu ce 11^e Rally Italia-Sardegna particulièrement éprouvant. Malgré tout, les partenaires WRC de Michelin n’ont connu qu’une seule crevaison (Paddon, ES9, suite à un choc).

Comme en 2013, le Finlandais Jari-Matti Latvala fut l’un des hommes forts de ce rallye. Malgré le désavantage de sa 2^e position sur la route vendredi, « JML » est parvenu à conclure la 1^èreétape en tête devant son équipier Ogier (+22s4) et les deux Norvégiens Mads Ostberg et Andreas Mikkelsen.

Le Lendemain, il résistait tant bien que mal à un Sébastien Ogier déchaîné. Mais dans l’ES13, la plus longue spéciale du rallye et peut-être de la saison (59,13 km), le Finlandais a dû changer sa roue (jante cassée) après être passé dans une profonde ornière, et a perdu tout espoir d’une seconde victoire consécutive après l’Argentine. Comme l’an passé, Jari-Matti échoue à la 3^eplace sur l’île méditerranéenne.

Et comme l’an passé, Sébastien Ogier (VW Polo R WRC/Michelin) monte sur la plus haute marche, terminant avec près d’une minute et demie d’avance bien qu’il ouvrait la route le 1^er jour. « C’est une belle victoire. On a roulé fort samedi pour mettre la pression sur Jari-Matti », a commenté le champion du monde sortant.

Deuxième, Mads Ostberg a signé sa plus belle performance avec Citroën-Total Abu Dhabi WRT. Le Norvégien a réussi ses deux missions qui furent de contenir Mikkelsen samedi, puis Latvala dimanche. Son équipier Kris Meeke fut une nouvelle fois malheureux avec un problème électrique (alternateur) dans l’ES5.

Derrière Andreas Mikkelsen, contraint à la 4^e place par la casse d’une suspension (ES12), Eflyn Evans (5^e, Ford) et Martin Prokop (6^e, Ford) se sont échangés leurs places par rapport à l’édition 2013. Le jeune Gallois et le pilote « privé » ont réalisé une belle performance dans ces conditions difficiles. Henning Solberg (7^e, Ford) devance Robert Kubica (8^e, Ford), reparti en Rally2 dimanche après avoir arraché une roue (ES12).

Khalid Al-Qassimi (Citroën) termine dans le top-ten. Pour son 1^er rallye WRC en tant que pilote officiel, le Néo-Zélandais Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) a pris la 12^e place finale après être reparti en Rally2 dimanche (problèmes moteur après passage d’un gué ES13).

L’équipe Hyundai-Shell WRT est passée par toutes les émotions en l’espace de deux heures vendredi matin. Idéalement placé sur la route, Thierry Neuville a remporté l’ES2 et pointait en tête de l’épreuve devant son équipier Juho Hanninen. A l’issue de l’ES3, c’est le Finlandais qui prit les rênes d’un rallye WRC pour la 1^ère fois de sa carrière.

Puis tout s’est enrayé pour l’équipe débutante en WRC : Hanninen a détruit sa Hyundai i20 WRC dans une sortie de route à haute vitesse (ES4), puis Thierry Neuville a connu un problème de suspension dans l’ES5 et perdu 23 minutes. Après l’incendie de la Ford de Mikko Hirvonen sur la liaison entre l’ES3 et l’ES4, les trois 1^ers leaders du rallye étaient déjà hors-jeu après seulement cinq spéciales…

Le pilote Italien Lorenzo Bertelli (Ford Fiesta RRC) s’est imposé en WRC-2 devant la nouvelle Citroën DS3 R5/Michelin de Sébastien Chardonnet et le Portugais Bernardo Sousa (Ford Fiesta RRC). Yuriy Protasov (Ford, crevaison), Nasser Al-Attiyah (Ford, sortie de route), Karl Kruuda (Peugeot, sortie de route) et Yazeed Al-Rahji (Ford, sortie de route) furent leaders successifs jusqu’à l’ES11

The 2014 Rally Italia-Sardegna, round six of the FIA World Rally Championship, saw Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia claim their 20th world class victory. They were joined on the podium by Mads Ostberg (Citroën, +1m21.3s) and Jari-Matti Latvala (VW, +1m32.8s), who led from SS5 to SS12.

 score of 20 WRC wins takes him past Markku Alèn and level with the 1994 world champion Didier Auriol. It also extends Volkswagen Motorsport’s unbeaten run to 10 events, a new record.

The challenge in Sardinia was heightened by intense heat (more than 50°C in the cars), dust and fine sand, in addition to the usual deep ruts and buried rocks, although Michelin’s partners only reported one puncture, the result of a big impact (Paddon, SS9).

As in 2013, Latvala played a front-running role. Despite being handicapped by an unfavourable running order on Friday, the Finn completed the day 22.4s clear of Ogier, and ahead of Norwegians Ostberg and Andreas Mikkelsen.

On Saturday, he successfully warded off the charging Ogier until the need to change a wheel that had been damaged in a deep rut on the week’s longest test (SS13, 59.13km) cost him the chance of scoring a second straight win after Argentina. Like 2013, he ended up third.

Again like last season, Ogier (VW Polo R WRC/Michelin) took the top prize, almost a minute-and-a-half clear despite being first on the road on Day 1. “It’s a big victory,” he said. “We pushed hard on Saturday to keep the pressure on Jari-Matti.”

Meanwhile, Ostberg (2^nd) landed his best result with Citroën-Total Abu Dhabi WRT after containing Mikkelsen on Saturday and Latvala today. His team-mate Kris Meeke was eliminated by an alternator problem on SS5.

Mikkelsen was fourth after damaging his suspension on SS12, followed by Ford’s Elfyn Evans and Martin Prokop who swapped positions compared with last year after strong runs in the difficult conditions. Henning Solberg was seventh, ahead of fellow Ford runner Robert Kubica who re-started under the Rally2 ruling today after losing a wheel on SS12.

Khalid Al-Qassimi (Citroën) finished in the top 10, while Hayden Paddon completed his first WRC outing as a factory driver in 12^th spot. He too made use of the Rally2 ruling today after suffering an engine problem following a water-splash on SS13.

Hyundai-Shell WRT topped the leaderboard briefly as Thierry Neuville and Juho Hanninen benefited from their Day 1 running orders to take turns in front after SS2 and SS3, a career first in the Finn’s case.

Things then went downhill when Hanninen destroyed his Hyundai i20 WRC in a high-speed crash on SS4, while the Belgian dropped 23 minutes with a suspension issue on SS5. Prior to that, the rally’s first leader Mikko Hirvonen had been eliminated when his Ford caught fire en route to SS4.

Italy’s Lorenzo Bertelli (Ford Fiesta RRC) won WRC-2 ahead of Sébastien Chardonnet (Citroën DS3 R5/Michelin) and Bernardo Sousa (Ford Fiesta RRC). Yuriy Protasov (Ford, puncture), Nasser Al-Attiyah (Ford, accident), Karl Kruuda (Peugeot, accident) and Yazeed Al-Rahji (Ford, accident) all took turns in front early on.
