Stéphane Lefebvre est leader de la catégorie Junior. A 22 ans, grâce à Sébastien Loeb, le Français vient de signer un contrat avec Red Bull pour poursuivre l’aventure en Championnat du monde Junior. Il mène aussi un programme parallèle en Championnat d’Europe Junior.
En dix jours, Stéphane Lefebvre a pris dix ans d’expérience ! La semaine dernière, au Rally d’Ypres, il a parcouru les 27,56 km de la dernière spéciale avec un capot moteur ouvert devant le pare-brise de sa Peugeot 208 R2 pour arracher la 1ère place en Junior, ex-aequo avec Crugnola. « C’était sympa, mais je ne le referai pas », a expliqué le pilote de la Peugeot Rally Academy, déclaré vainqueur grâce à un meilleur temps dans l’ES1.
Dès l’arrivée du Rallye d’Ypres, Stéphane et son copilote Thomas Dubois ont pris un vol pour Varsovie pour participer aux reconnaissances du Rally Poland, 2e manche mondiale du championnat Junior. Après sa victoire au Portugal, c’est en leader du championnat que le Français a entamé ce rallye au volant d’une Citroën DS3 R3T/Michelin préparée par PH’Sport. Un rallye qu’il avait déjà disputé l’an passé dans le cadre du championnat d’Europe.
« Le parcours est différent, mais je connaissais le profil des spéciales et le type de terrain. J’avais appris à rouler dans les rails et ça m’a servi vendredi pour l’étape en Lituanie », expliquait le nouveau pilote Red Bull.
« En début d’année, je cherchais un budget complémentaire pour mener ce programme mondial en Junior. J’ai alors contacté Sébastien Loeb qui m’a mis en relation avec Red Bull. Le partenariat devait commencer au Portugal, mais il ne débute que ce week-end et court sur toute la fin de saison WRC. »
A l’issue de la 3e étape du Rally Poland, Stéphane Lefebvre est leader de la catégorie Junior, avec plus de deux minutes d’avance. Une seconde victoire lui permettrait de conforter sa place de leader au championnat du monde Junior avant le Rallye de Finlande. Stéphane est aussi 2edu championnat d’Europe Junior, à deux points du leader. Il devrait aussi participer à quelques manches françaises du Volant Peugeot 208 R2.

The man in front in the Junior battle is Stéphane Lefebvre. Thanks to Sébastien Loeb, the 22-year old has just signed a contract with Red Bull to continue his Junior WRC programme, in addition to his European Junior campaign.
Stéphane Lefebvre has gained 10 years’ worth of experience in the space of just 10 days! Last week, at Ypres, he completed the final stage (27.56km) with the bonnet of his Peugeot R2 open, concealing his view of the road, yet he completed the Belgian stage to finish the Junior class in first place, level with Crugnola. “It was fun, but I don’t want to go through that again,” said the Peugeot Rally Academy driver who was declared winner thanks to his fastest time on SS1.
Immediately after Ypres, Stéphane and his co-driver Thomas Dubois flew to Poland in time to recce the route of this weekend’s event, round two of the 2014 Junior WRC. After winning in Portugal, he topped the provisional standings before starting Rally Poland (which he did last season as part of his ERC programme) in a PH’Sport-prepared Citroën DS3 R3T/Michelin.
“The route is different, but I am familiar with the profile of the stages and the lie of the land. Last year, I learned to stay in the ruts and that helped me for the Lithuanian stages on Friday,” he related.
“At the start of the year, I was looking for some extra budget to take part in the Junior WRC, so I contacted Sébastien Loeb who put me in contact with Red Bull. The partnership was supposed to have started in Portugal but it finally began here, and it will continue through to the end of the season.”
After Day 3 in Poland, Stéphane tops the Junior standings by more than two minutes. A second win would strengthen his lead ahead of the next round in Finland. Stéphane is second in the ERC Junior classification, too, just two points down on the leader. He is also planning to take part in selected round of France’s Volant Peugeot 208 R2 series.
When you think about it, the fact that he is contesting the Junior WRC in a Citroën prepared by PH’Sport is very similar to the early careers of Loeb and Ogier!
