Les brèves du mercredi…/ Wednesday’s WRC notes: Wales

Au menu de nos dernières brèves du mercredi 2014… la saison 2015 qui se profile déjà à l’horizon. Au Pays de Galles, on a vu des moutons, des dragons, des rugbymen, des Volkswagen au-dessus de la mêlée…

- A l’arrivée de la dernière spéciale, Robert Kubica a déclaré qu’il ne savait pas s’il sera en rallye ou en circuit la saison prochaine. « Pour l’instant, c’est du 50-50. »

- Dimanche matin, lors du dernier parc d’assistance de la saison, les mécaniciens M-Sport ont fait une haie d’honneur pour Mikko Hirvonen et Jarmo Lehtinen. Direction les Maldives pour Mikko. Le Finlandais sera au soleil et sous les cocotiers au moment du prochain Rallye Monte-Carlo.

- Deux nouvelles Volkswagen Polo R WRC 2015 seront engagées au Rallye Monte-Carlo. Andreas Mikkelsen devrait débuter la saison au volant de la version 2014.

- Deux Hyundai i20 WRC seront au départ du Rallye Monte-Carlo. L’équipe sud-coréenne n’est pas encore certaine d’engager une 3^e voiture sur la saison.

- Les tests Monte-Carlo 2015 vont débuter dans deux semaines pour Hyundai, qui partira ensuite en essais Suède mi-décembre. Volkswagen et Ford ont également prévu des tests Monte-Carlo mi-décembre. Citroën attendra le mois de janvier.

- Au Wales Rally GB, tout le monde se posait la question de savoir si Sébastien Loeb serait au départ du Rallye Monte-Carlo 2015 sur une Citroën DS3 WRC/Michelin. Wait and see… En revanche, Citroën Racing a confirmé que trois C-Elysées seront engagées en WTCC 2015 pour Lopez/Muller/Loeb et que deux autres seront confiées au Sébastien Loeb Racing.

- Après Molly Taylor en France et Jari Ketomaa en Espagne, nos amis de WRC Radio avait fait appel à l’Irlandais Craig Breen pour interviewer les pilotes aux arrivées de spéciales puisque Molly et Jari étaient au volant ce week-end. Molly Taylor a terminé 4^e en WRC-3 et Jari Ketomma a remporté le WRC-2.

- Après Hagfors Sprint en Suède (ES11), Henning Solberg a remporté une autre Superspéciale ce week-end, Chirk Castle (ES13). Le Norvégien a dû abandonner sur la liaison entre l’ES19 et l’ES20 à cause d’une fuite de carburant sur sa Ford Fiesta.

- La sortie de route d’Andreas Mikkelsen vendredi matin a privé son copilote Ola Floene d’une 3^eplace au Championnat du monde des Copilotes au profit du néo-retraité finlandais Jarmo Lehtinen.

- Tony Jardine et sa copilote de charme Peta Todd (Madame Cavendish) ont terminé le Wales Rally GB à la 47^e place sur leur Mitsubishi Lancer après être repartis en Rally2 samedi matin. Jardine aurait dû être navigué par la star internationale de cricket Graeme Swann, mais l’ancien joueur de l’équipe britannique (né près de Silverstone) s’est vu proposer le volant d’une Ford Fiesta R2/Michelin pour disputer le rallye national. Malgré un tonneau dans l’ES1, Graeme a terminé 46^e.

- Vainqueur de la manche britannique, Alastair Fisher décroche les titres de vice-champion du monde WRC-3 et J-WRC 2014. Le calendrier J-WRC 2015 comprend 7 épreuves : Monte-Carlo, Portugal, Pologne, Finlande, France, Espagne, Grande-Bretagne.

At the end of Rally GB’s final stage, Robert Kubica said he didn’t know if we would see him in rallying next year: “For the moment, it’s fifty-fifty.”

At the final service halt of the year on Sunday, M-Sport’s mechanics lined up to form a guard of honour to salute Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen. The Finnish driver intends to be on a coconut tree-lined beach in the Maldives during January’s Rallye Monte-Carlo.

Volkswagen will have two new 2015-spec Polo R WRCs on the Rallye Monte-Carlo. Andreas Mikkelsen is expected to start next season in a 2014 car.

There will be two Hyundai i20 WRCs on the Rallye Monte-Carlo. The South Korean make has yet to decide whether it will run a third car next year.

Hyundai’s Monte Carlo testing is due to start testing in two weeks’ time before the team heads for Sweden in the middle of December, which is when Volkswagen and Ford have planned their Monte testing. Citroën will wait until January.

Will Sébastien Loeb start the 2015 Rallye Monte-Carlo in a Citroën DS3 WRC/Michelin as suggested by some in Wales? We’ll have to wait and see… Meanwhile, Citroën Racing will have C-Elyséeses (is that the plural?) for Lopez, Muller and Loeb in the 2015 WTCC. Sébastien Loeb Racing will run two other cars.

After calling on the services of Molly Taylor in France and Jari Ketomaa in Spain, our friends at WRC Radio recruited Irishman Craig Breen for their end-of-stage interviews in Wales, since Molly and Jari were both competing! The former came fourth in WRC-3, while the Finn won the WRC-2 class.

After winning the Hagfors Sprint in Sweden (SS11), Henning Solberg won another super-special in Wales (Chirk Castle, SS13). The Norwegian retired after completing SS19 when his Ford Fiesta WRC developed a fuel leak.

Andreas Mikkelsen’s crash on Friday morning deprived his co-driver Ola Floene of third place in the Co-drivers world championship. The bronze medal went instead to Finnish retiree Jarmo Lehtinen.

Rally GB veteran Tony Jardine (Mitsubishi Lancer) is traditionally joined on his home event by a celebrity co-driver. This year, he was with former glamour model Peta Cavendish who navigated him to 47^th overall, despite a crash on Day 1.

Jardine's original plan had been to have cricket star Graeme Swann alongside. Instead, the ex-England team hero (who was born near Silverstone!) was offered the driver's seat in a Ford Fiesta R2/Michelin on the parallel 'national' rally. He recovered from an “embarrassing” roll on SS1 to finish 46^th overall.

Alastair Fisher’s class win in Wales earned him runner-up honours in both the 2014 WRC-3 and J-WRC classifications. The 2015 J-WRC calendar features seven rounds: Monte Carlo, Portugal, Poland, Finland, France, Spain and Wales.
