Le Rallye de Chypre est une épreuve mixte terre/asphalte et compte pour deux championnats FIA : Europe et Moyen-Orient. Kajetan Kajetanowicz et Nasser Al-Attiyah ont l’occasion de faire le break aux championnats ERC et MERC.
Côté Europe, le Polonais (Ford Fiesta R5) compte 23 points d’avance sur l’Irlandais qui fait l’impasse sur l’épreuve chypriote. En cas de victoire, Kajetan Kajetanowicz pourrait donc faire un pas vers son premier titre européen et marcher sur les traces de Sobieslaw Zasada et Krzystof Holowczyc...
Le pilote Loto Rally Team aura pour adversaire le Russe Alexey Lukyanuk (Ford Fiesta R5), brillant vainqueur du Rally Estonia, le Français Robert Consani (DS3 R5) de retour avec une nouvelle voiture et Lara Vanneste à ses côtés, ou encore le Portugais Bruno Magalhaes (Peugeot 208 T16) qui revient en ERC. Les fidèles Tchèques Tarabus et Tlustak (Skoda S2000) complètent un plateau à majorité chypriote.
Côté Moyen-Orient, le plateau ne compte que 9 concurrents. Comme en ERC, Khalid Al-Cassimi étant absent, Nasser Al-Attiyah (Fiesta RRC/Michelin) a l’occasion de faire le break puisqu’il compte déjà 24 points d’avance. Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari (Fiesta RRC) sera un adversaire coriace.
Comme les années précédentes en IRC puis ERC, le parcours est mixte terre/asphalte avec 62% terre (126 km) et 38 % asphalte (77 km). Tous les concurrents sont chaussés uniquement de pneus terre. Les organisateurs ont promis des épreuves spéciales plus rapides cette année entre Larnaca (départ) et Nicosie
Parmi les 16 spéciales au programme de cette édition, la Superspéciale de Nicosie (6,48 km) sera très symbolique puisqu’elle se déroulera en zone contrôlée par les Nations-Unies qui séparent la partie chypriote et la partie grecque de l’île méditerranéenne. Elle avait été récompensée par le Secrétaire général de l’ONU en 2014.
Le Rallye de Chypre débutera par une Qualifying Stage (4,46 km) vendredi matin qui déterminera l’ordre des départs. Quelles positions choisiront les pilotes sur ce parcours mixte ? L’épreuve s’élancera samedi 26 septembre pour une arrivée le lendemain.
The mixed-surface dirt/asphalt Cyprus Rally counts towards both the FIA’s European and Middle-East Rally Championships. Kajetan Kajetanowicz and Nasser Al-Attiyah have a chance to go clear in the ERC and MERC standings.
In the European title chase, Kajetanowicz (Ford Fiesta R5) has a 23-point lead over Ireland’s Craig Breen who is not taking part. Victory for the Pole would give him a serious chance of claiming his first ERC title and thereby following in the footsteps of compatriots Sobieslaw Zasada and Krzystof Holowczyc.
The Loto Rally Team driver’s main threats will be Russia’s Alexey Lukyanuk (Ford Fiesta R5), winner in Estonia, Frenchman Robert Consani, who returns in a new DS3 R5 with Lara Vanneste as co-driver, and Portugal’s Bruno Magalhaes (Peugeot 208 T16) who is making his ERC comeback. The Czech Republic’s Tarabus and Tlustak (Skoda S2000) also appear on the entry list which chiefly features Cypriots, along with nine Middle-East crews.
In the MERC battle, Nasser Al-Attiyah (Fiesta RRC/Michelin) will endeavour to take advantage of Khalid Al-Cassimi’s absence to increase his 24-point cushion, but he can expect strong opposition from Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari (Fiesta RRC).
The Rally Cyprus organisers continue to propose a mixed-surface format, with a combination of 62% dirt (126km) and 38% asphalt (77km) which competitors will tackle exclusively on gravel tyres.
Faster stages have been promised this year, too, and the 16 tests include a 6.48km super-special in Nicosia. Symbolically, it will be held in the United Nations-controlled buffer zone between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish parts of the island. The initiative was hailed by the UN’s General Secretary in 2014.
The 2015 Rally Cyprus will start with a Qualifying Stage (4.46km) on Friday morning to decide start orders, potentially crucial for this mixed-surface event.
The rally will start in Larnaka on Saturday, September 26, and finish in the same town the next day.
