PATIENCE PAID DIVIDENDS FOR OTT TÄNAK AS HE CLAIMED A THIRD CONSECUTIVE WRC VICTORY IN TURKEY ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON TO FURTHER IGNITE HIS FIA WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE BID.
The Estonian quickly realised he did not have the speed to match his rivals at Rally Turkey and settled for a more cautious pace in the searing heat on rocky gravel roads near Marmaris.
He was rewarded when driver after driver fell by the wayside in the gruelling conditions, climbing from ninth midway through Friday’s opening leg to head a Toyota Yaris one-two by 22.3sec from Jari-Matti Latvala.
He is the first driver to win three consecutive rounds since world champion Sébastien Ogier claimed four in a row en route to the 2016 title.
“It was so difficult. On Friday we knew if we finished in the top five or six we would be happy. Since the start it wasn’t a rally where the fastest would win, it would be the smartest. We did the whole rally without any stops and now the championship looks interesting,” he said.
Tänak moved into the lead of one of the most dramatic rounds in years on Saturday after title rivals Thierry Neuville and Sébastien Ogier retired. He eased through Sunday’s finale and was welcomed onto the podium by Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Tänak climbed to second in the points, just 13 adrift of Thierry Neuville who gained some consolation from a barren weekend by claiming maximum bonus points in the Live TV Power Stage. Ogier is a further 10 points back with three rounds remaining.
Second was Latvala’s best result of the year and Hayden Paddon claimed a similar season-best in third in a Hyundai i20. The New Zealander finished 1min 46.3sec behind Tänak.
Teemu Suninen was fourth in a Ford Fiesta, more than four minutes off the winning pace, with erstwhile leader Andreas Mikkelsen recovering from a broken front right driveshaft yesterday to finish fifth in an i20.
Henning Solberg was sixth ahead of WRC 2 winner Jan Kopecký, Simone Tempestini and Chris Ingram. Ogier took a solitary point for 10th after team-mate Elfyn Evans deliberately incurred time penalties to drop behind the Frenchman.
Round 11 is the Dayinsure Wales Rally GB, which is based in Deeside on 4 - 7 October.

En Turquie, Ott Tänak (Toyota Yaris) a vite réalisé qu'il n'aurait pas la vitesse pour rivaliser avec ses principaux adversaires et a préféré un rythme plus prudent dans la fournaise et sur les routes rocailleuses autour de Marmaris.
L'Estonien a été récompensé lorsque les pilotes sont tombés un par un au champ d'honneur dans ces conditions épuisantes. Neuvième vendredi à mi-journée, Ott Tänak a finalement emmené un doublé Toyota avec Jari-Matti Latvala (Toyota Yaris).
Ott Tänak est le premier pilote à remporter trois manches consécutives du Championnat du Monde FIA des Rallyes depuis la série de quatre succès signée par Sébastien Ogier en 2016, vainqueur du titre la même année.
« Cela a été très difficile », a déclaré le vainqueur. « Vendredi, on savait que si on finissait dans les cinq ou six premiers, on pourrait être contents. Dès le départ, ça n'a pas été un rallye où les plus rapides gagneraient, mais les plus intelligents. On a fait tout le rallye sans aucun arrêt et le championnat est d’autant plus intéressant maintenant. »
Désormais deuxième du championnat, le pilote Toyota pointe à treize points seulement de Thierry Neuville, qui s'est offert un petit lot de consolation en remportant le maximum de points en jeu sur la Power Stage. Sébastien Ogier compte dix unités de plus en retard à trois manches de la fin de saison.Ott Tänak a su profiter des déboires de ses rivaux Thierry Neuville (Hyundai i20) et Sébastien Ogier (Ford Fiesta) lors d'un rallye des plus mouvementés. Tous les deux contraints à l'abandon samedi, l'Estonien a dès lors assuré sur la dernière étape avant d'être accueilli sur le podium par le président turc, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Deuxième, Jari-Matti Latvala signe son meilleur résultat de l'année devant Hayden Paddon (Hyundai i20), auteur de son premier podium de la saison à 1'46''3 du vainqueur.
Teemu Suninen (Ford Fiesta) s'est classé quatrième à plus de quatre minutes du vainqueur tandis qu'Andreas Mikkelsen (Hyundai i20) - leader samedi après-midi - a survécu à la casse de son arbre de transmission avant droit pour prendre la cinquième place.
Henning Solberg (Skoda Fabia R5) a fini sixième devant Jan Kopecký (Skoda Fabia R5), vainqueur en WRC 2, Simone Tempestini (Citroën C3 R5) et Chris Ingram (Skoda Fabia R5). Sébastien Ogier (Ford Fiesta) a pris le point de la dixième place après que son équipier Elfyn Evans (Ford Fiesta) écope délibérément d'une pénalité pour favoriser le Français.
La prochaine manche du calendrier mènera les concurrents à Deeside pour le Dayinsure Wales Rally GB (4-7 octobre).
