L’accident est arrivé dans l’ES2, Las Bajadas/Villa del Dique. Troisième sur la route, le Finlandais a perdu le contrôle de la Peugeot 205 T16 n°4 à pleine vitesse, dans une ligne droite, après avoir tapé dans un trou.
L’auto a décollé pour retomber violemment quelques mètres plus loin, côté pilote, puis d’effectuer trois tonneaux et de se disloquer complètement. Ari était sévèrement touché. Son copilote, Terry Harryman, était blessé lui aussi, mais plus légèrement.
L’hélicoptère de Peugeot Sport, qui suivait Timo Salonen parti en première position, s’est détourné pour porter secours à l’équipage de la Peugeot n°4. Ari fut transporté à l’hôpital de Cordoba avec de multiples fractures (vertèbre cervicale, genou, huit côtes, cheville…). Le Finlandais fut opéré pendant huit heures, et transfusé à trois reprises. En ce 31 juillet 1985, il a frôlé la mort.
Convaincu d’avoir contracté le virus du SIDA lors de ces transfusions sanguines, Ari Vatanen est ensuite tombé dans une longue et profonde dépression, dont il ne sortit qu’un an plus tard, après une visite au Rally des 1000 Lacs, et avec le soutien de Jean Todt qui lui proposa de re-piloter pour Peugeot.
Dix-huit mois après son terrible accident argentin, le Rallye Dakar 1987 marquait le début d’une nouvelle vie pour le grand blond. Cette renaissance s’est soldée par une victoire au volant de la Peugeot 205 T16 Grand-Raid.
Quelques mois plus tard, Ari Vatanen était de retour en WRC, au Safari Rally, sur une Subaru RX Turbo, puis au Rally des 1000 Lacs 1987 sur une Ford Sierra Cosworth, son dernier rallye WRC avec son compère Terry Harryman.
Ari a ensuite partagé sa carrière sportive entre Rallye Tout-Terrain (victoire au Dakar 1989, 90, 91), Course-de-côte de Pikes Peak (victoire en 1988) et WRC (Mitsubishi, Subaru, Ford), mais il n’a plus remporté de rallye mondial.
It was 30 years ago, on July 21, 1985, that Ari Vatanen survived a frightening crash during the Rally Argentina. Only two months previously, the Finn had escaped from a series of scary rolls in Corsica.
Ari’s ‘big one’ happened on the 1985 Rally Argentina’s SS2, Las Bajadas/Villa del Dique. Running third on the road, the Finn lost control of his Peugeot 205 T16 at high speed after hitting a pot hole down a fast straight.
After leaving the ground, the car landed heavily on the driver’s side before performing three rolls and essentially disintegrating. Ari was badly hurt, and his co-driver Terry Harryman was also injured, but less seriously.
The Peugeot helicopter, which was following Timo Salonen who was first on the road, was called back to assist the crew and Ari was taken to hospital in Cordoba with numerous fractures (cervical vertebra, knee, eight ribs, ankle…). He was in surgery for eight hours and received three blood transfusions. By all accounts, he was fortunate to come through.
Convinced he had contracted AIDS because of the transfusions, he subsequently suffered from a long period of depression. It took him a year to snap out of it after a visit to the 1000 Lakes Rally and also thanks to the support of Jean Todt who offered him a drive with Peugeot again.
Eighteen months after his big scare, the amiable Finn effectively took part in the 1987 Dakar which marked a turning point in his life as he went on to claim victory in the ‘Grand Raid’ version of the Peugeot 205 T16.
A few months later, he made his WRC comeback on the Safari driving a Subaru RX Turbo, before contesting the 1987 1000 Lakes Rally in a Ford Sierra Cosworth. It was his final outing with Harryman alongside.
