L’équipe M-Sport a réussi l’impossible : réparer la Ford Fiesta RS WRC qui avait passé près de dix heures dans un lac après la spectaculaire sortie de route de Tanak dans l’ES3. L’intervention a duré trois heures au parc d’assistance de Leon.
Vendredi matin, à 9h22, la Ford Fiesta RS WRC n°6 a plongé dans un lac après 2,6 km parcourus dans l’ES3. Ott Tanak et Raigo Molder sont parvenus à s’extraire rapidement de l’habitacle avant que la voiture ne coule à pic.
La Ford n’a pu être repêchée qu’après la fin du second tour. Elle a passé plus de 9 heures de sous l’eau. Mais l’équipe M-Sport a tout de même voulu tenter de la réparer pour qu’elle puisse repartir en Rally2 ce matin. Sous la conduite de Bernado, chef voiture, les huit mécaniciens (maximum par véhicule en WRC) avaient trois heures.
La voiture est arrivée au parc de Leon peu après 20h00. Après avoir assuré le service de routine sur la Ford d’Elfyn Evans, l’équipe s’est concentrée sur celle de Tanak, encore dégoulinante d’eau et de boue.
Au parc d’assistance, le spectacle a donc débuté sur le coup des 21h00, sous les yeux de nombreux spectateurs, de membres d’autres teams, d’Ott et Raigo qui sont restés jusqu’au bout de l’intervention.
Les mécaniciens M-Sport ont enlevé et remplacé les transmissions, suspensions, boîte de vitesses, échappement, turbo, système de refroidissement, radiateur. Ils ont aussi dû réparer le bloc moteur et l’assécher… Dans l’habitacle, il a fallu enlever et faire sécher les sièges, remplacer les faisceaux électriques systèmes électroniques, changer le réservoir et le système d’alimentation en carburant. Sans oublier la déco et les stickers à recoller.
Trois heures plus tard, la Ford Fiesta RS WRC n°6 a redémarré, sous un tonnerre d’applaudissements. Ott Tanak et Raigo Molder l’ont conduite eux-mêmes au parc fermé peu après minuit. Chapeau les gars !
La Ford n°6 est donc prête à reprendre la course. On espère qu’elle va terminer l’épreuve. Lors du Dakar 2013, quelques véhicules avaient été noyés dans un rio en crue, notamment la Mitsubishi de Spinelli. L’assistance avait alors entièrement reconstruit l’auto, mais le lendemain, après seulement quelques kilomètres sur le routier, la mécanique avait rendu l’âme… Allez, on y croit…
M-Sport has successfully repaired Tanak’s Ford Fiesta RS WRC which spent almost 10 hours underwater after the Estonian crashed into a lake on SS3 on Friday. Work lasted three hours.
At 9:22am, Friday, the N°6 Ford Fiesta RS WRC crashed into a lake 2.6km after the start of SS3. Ott Tanak and his co-driver Raigo Molder just had time to get out of the car before it sunk to the bottom.
It was only once the second visit to the same stage had been completed that M-Sport was able to recover the vehicle after it had spent more than nine hours submerged. Once it was out of the water, the team turned its attention to making the necessary repairs for it to re-start this morning under the Rally2 ruling. Led by the car’s chief mechanic Bernado, aided by eight colleagues (the maximum authorised), the technical squad had three hours to do the job…
The car arrived back at the service park in Leon just after 8pm and, after carrying out routine end-of-day work on Elfyn Evans’ Fiesta, the team switched its attention to Tanak’s machine which was still dripping with mud and water.
Work began at 9pm and was watched by a big crowd of spectators, members of rival teams and Ott and Raigo who remained until its completion.
Mechanics removed and replaced the transmission system, suspension, gearbox, exhaust, turbo, cooling system and radiator. They also repaired and dried the engine block.
Inside, the seats needed drying, while the wiring loom for the electronic systems, the fuel tank and the fuel system were all changed, not to mention the stickers which also needed replacing.
Three hours later, the Estonians’ Ford was fired up to a big round of applause. Ott and Raigo drove it to parc ferme themselves shortly after midnight!
